I totally agree with you. When TR was killed of it was a great MMO, I was actually pretty angry about the whole thing. I tend to avoid MMOs for the first 4-5 months because there seems to be a lot of growing pains. This is what I did with TR, and from what I hear I was glad I did.

I am happy for Garriott, but sadly the lawsuit is far from over for him and NCsoft. For all the people that are talking about ArenaNet. ArenaNet is a computer game developer and part of NCsoft Corporation, they are acquired by NCsoft. ArenaNet report directly to NC West! So NCsoft is not just the publisher for Guild Wars 2 but they own every single bit of code of the game!

I have no idea how people think NCsoft is just the publisher for Guild Wars 2, they own ArenaNet and they had a vote into everything they did with the game, they are doing the marketing of the game and everyone playing and buying the game will pay NCsoft money not ArenaNet.

In short ArenaNet is Owned by NCsoft and there for they are the same.

No. No. No. No please take an introductory business class no.

That's like saying Saturn, Chevrolet, Buick and Cadillac are the one in the same because they are (or 'were' in the case of Saturn) all owned by GM. The companies are/were all very different entities.

From ArenaNet "About Us":

Located in Bellevue, Washington, ArenaNet is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Korea-based NCsoft Corporation.

I think Archmage and JustPlainJim just got owned. That's right, when you bash NCsoft, you're also bashing your precious Arena Net.

All I know is GW2 is going to be a great game and NC makes great games. Yeap, TR was a great game, GW was a great game, Aion is a great game (to me) and GW2 will be a great game. If you wish to skip out on it because of the NC logo, thats your luck.

@Genius:
No, I didn't just get "owned". Let's go for an example, shall we? Let's say I own JimCo, makers of Stuff (TM). BobCo also makes Stuff (TM). In the crap-tastic year that was 2009, JimCo's stocks plummet and BobCo decides to buy out JimCo. This usually goes one of three ways:
1) BobCo just wants the JimCo name, so it fires all JimCo employees (or "relocates" them) and puts BobCo employees in their place under the JimCo name.
2) BobCo plays puppetmaster and micromanages every move that JimCo makes. This is less popular because it requires a lot of work on the part of BobCo and the people at JimCo often become less effective.
3) BobCo realizes that despite JimCo's financial troubles, they are a good company. They provide the financial backing for JimCo and so long as it still makes money, BobCo doesn't medel with things unless it's drastically against the BobCo mission statement.

In all three cases, BobCo wholly owns JimCo. How 'alike' they are is just a matter of how much BobCo medels in the affairs of JimCo.

My main issue is the letter. Mr. Garriot is claiming NCSoft forged the letter and sent it around? Seriously? They engaged in fraud to make it look like someone they fired had left voluntarily? Doesn't that seem a little far fetched?

NCSoft may be many things, but stupid and childish are not traits I'd associate with that company. However, a jury disagrees with me. Considering the current hostile environment towards overpaid execs (Garriot clearly qualifies here) the fact that the Jury sided with him implies he's either really really persuasive, or there was evidence that the letter really WAS forged. *boggle*

I feel like Garriot owes me some of that money, in exchange for me playing that steaming pile called Tabula Rasa. I don't know what version of the game you guys were playing, but the week after release all I saw was bad design, bad implementation, bad art, and missing features.

Hell I played HORIZONS for 30 days (meat pies ftw), but I gave up on TR after just a few days.

It's widely acknowledged that TR was crap at launch. But did you try it again before it was closed down? It was a much, much better game.

It is, unfortunately, the pattern with a lot of MMOs - money runs out so they get pushed out the door before they're ready in the hope they'll survive long enough to become the game they were meant to be. Arguably TR achieved this, though NCSoft still pulled the plug for reasons we'll never really know.

Sometimes this method works, sometimes it doesn't. It's a lousy way to do business, but if the money's gone the choices are pretty stark: shut down and kiss the money you've already spent goodbye, or release and start praying. Doesn't excuse the poor planning etc, but that's how it goes.

I'm not a fan of NCSoft, but awarding Garriot more than the game was worth, or even a successful one is, isn't good precedent. I doubt his contribution or damages would be worth 28 million.

Stuff like this is bad too because that money doesn't just get picked from trees. Project funding, both existing and future gets hit by this. I bet that this is one of the reasons why Exteel was shut down, and Lineage 2 is seeing dev priority over NA aion.

Now that Exteel is gone every single NCsoft game except for Guild Wars is sub-based, and they offer paid server moves and the like as well. So I don't know how you can see them as embracing the GW model when only one current game uses it.

Valuing Game quality? Have you played L2 or Aion? Isn't this thread about Tabula Rasa?

I think you have way too much focus on a single game Tempus, and that game is Guild Wars. NC Soft is not only guild wars, and on the whole it's not a very good publisher. This whole lawsuit is bad too because it's coming at a time when their flagship game, Aion, is hurting.

"At least NCSoft lets titles use the Guild Wars financial model instead of a "milk 'em dry" model like EQ2 or WoW."

There is one MMO on NCsoft's list that uses the "Guild Wars" model, and that is Guild Wars.

Aion is subscription, City of Heroes is subscription + small cash shop, and so are both lineage games.

City of Heroes has 5 booster packs, one wedding pack, a 30-day jetpack, and a good vs evil booster pack to the total tune of $75 USD on their store. Guild Wars has 17 "nonessential" cash shop items to the tune of over $80. Aion had temporary holiday cash shop items.

For Sony's Live Gamer Exchange, they keep those servers segregated from normal servers. Their cash shop items are double dipping, but ultimately nonessential.

World of Warcraft has 3 pets and a mount.

Troll harder.

I couldn't give a damn about Activision or SOE either. NCSoft can die a fast and painful death. You're delusional if you seriously believe NCSoft is about game quality over dollar signs. From a very subjective stand point they have never released anything worth a damn besides Guild Wars.

You can fanboy it up on NCSoft all you want and I'll continue to believe that they are pure garbage.

City of Heroes is garbage, Lineage is also garbage. Honestly I really don't care if you like NCSoft seriously. I really don't care to discuss this with you. I don't like NCSoft, DEAL WITH IT.

These are opinions get over it.

Garriott is not perfect but I back him in this court decision.
NCSoft should have at least giving TR a F2P model before shutting the game.
If they can have Exteel and Dungeon Runners free to play, which both have failed.
Then why not TR. NCSoft needs a better PR company if they are going to
continue with these shenanigans.
