For PvE, Pyre actually sucks compared to flame breath. Flame breath works much better with thermal reverb because you can maintain it a long time and it has no real charge up time. Pyre also is an aoe centered around you, but flame breath is a cone aoe with decent range. Pyre is able to add a knockback effect with backdraft, so it might be useful for that.

I disagree on Imbue being useful. The problem with it is that it is a crit based off your con stat, which few builds superstat. However the biggest problem is that its hard to execute successfully because you have to disengage your energy builder or have great timing: if the energy builder attack hits your target before the move you want does, imbue's bonus affects it, and is wasted. You can work around it but might also run into energy problems.

But for PvE you don't even need powers with good synergy. Slap regen on and pick any offensive power and you'll steamroller almost all content. It's that easy.

I feel like you're subverting the entire point of the article. Getting a build you like for PvE, for playing through the majority of the game's content, that works the way you want it to isn't any less important than creating a top-tier PvP build.
For the majority of players, who will never PvP seriously, it's far more important.
Telling people to just "take regen" is exactly what this article is trying to counter, and defeats the purpose of having the open-ended power selection system.

And as for Imbue, it is absolutely a fantastic power. Con is an extremely useful stat for ANY character, and will bolster Imbue's crit power at any level, and at bare minimum is a guaranteed crit, which is always going to be a great damage boost.
Turning off your energy builder isn't particularly difficult. Not wanting to take Imbue because you have to play intelligently to use it is selling yourself short, and just downright lazy. For a player who wants to do a big up-front hit and wipe a spawn with a guaranteed crit AoE monstrosity, there's no substitute (except maybe Sonic Device).

It's also worth mentioning that all of the breath attacks are bugged. You might notice that if enemies decide to move out of the initial cone area, it won't track them. Oh, sure, it might LOOK like you are, but all three of the breath powers are bugged to get the AoE stuck tracking on the spot where the enemy you were targeting was standing when you started the attack, and won't follow enemies if they move out of the area.
That's pretty crippling when mobs have a tendency to strafe pretty considerably at the start of an engagement.
On the other hand, teleporting, super-running, or just flying straight into a spawn and busting out Pyre is extremely devastating.
Not to say that Fire Breath isn't usable (actually, that is basically what I'm trying to say... I wish the devs would fix it already) but because it's not working as intended, it's going to cause a player problems fairly often, especially if it's their primary offensive AoE power.

Patrick that is a good list. Do you have recommendations for archery? I did not see that anywhere listed in the article.

Of the several frameworks I've tried, Archery is the most painful to level (at least for me).

I agree Turlagh. My main is archery level 28 and it is a pain.

That's another reason why I never got on with CO - Archery was the main framework I tried to play, because Archery is my favourite powerset in City of Heroes and is tremendously effective there.

I think the writer is talking about PvE, and that's what I am talking about when replying. If he is talking PvP there is no "build you like" and most successful PvP builds are very specific.

I used a fire build 1-50. Fire Breath was ten times more useful in PvE. If the enemies are at range chances are you are going to beat the weak trash mobs before they even get to you and the AI pattern doesn't have them strafe as much as you think: it's an issue when enemies close to you, and FB will kill them many times before they even get there. Also again, it's at range. Try doing Fight Club by running into a spawn of enemies and popping Pyre.

FB has problems, like when you are slightly out of range. It triggers the animation for a few seconds but no attack. But pyre really isn't a good fire power as he makes it out.

As for Imbue the guaranteed crit is meh, because it's potency is based of of that con stat. So you need to superstat it or get it to 200ish to get the best effect, and not many builds are going to pick that. You soft-sell the energy builder, but most big-hit powers take a tremendous amount of energy, as does imbue itself. This makes it harder to use it as an alpha strike ability, and in PvE honestly the mobs are so weak you don't need it for that. Most moves alone will destroy them.

I used to fool around with it a lot, one of my builds was trying to make it work with a munitions toon and sniper rifle. It's really not that good in average play. It was originally designed imo to be a "big hit" for meelee builds and heals since they didn't have energy forms to click on for increased damage, but now with the meelee changes they can do such absurd damage that they dont need it.

The open-ended power system really isn't. In PvE you don't need to do anything but soak damage and cause damage, and for normal leveling you only have to do a small amount of both. That's why I said pick regen and any power: power selection doesn't matter at all really if you pick one defensive passive and one aoe attack, and regen is more efficient than any of the defensive passives there.

Most of the useful powers just cause damage and do so efficiently. Stealth doesn't work in PvE at all, I can max it out and superstat INT and I still get spotted by mobs simply by being within a set distance. And lairs always make it so you are within a set distance. Roots and holds in PvE are near pointless too: The tough bosses are immune, everything else you can tank.

That was one of my gripes with the game. There's a lot of fancy moves, but the gameplay just drives a simple brute force approach.

I beat Fight Club with Pyre; also note that if you have flashfire, tap spamming pyre is pretty powerful. You don't need to full charge it. Its damage is ridiculously high, and if you can get a full charge it feeds thermal reverb. The tap spam dps though is super high, if you can't charge it.

Imbue is outstandingly good with certain powers. You don't need superstat CON. I have had 2 superstat con characters out of around 5 endgame characters, and all but one has imbue. Crit heals are great (conviction crits now!) and if you have a burst skill or a pet, imbue is really powerful. You don't need 200 in a stat for it to be good! Ideally all characters will have pretty decent con, minimum 80-100 for endgame characters and up to around 150 if you have no PRE in your build (without a superstat). The idea that you need a superstat to use heals or imbue is just ridiculous. I wrote a huge post linked above explaining how you should gear your character.

Regen is only best without external buffs. Read my defensive passive post; it explains a lot. Regen is also not as good as defiance, tbh. With only bionic shielding and defiance you can handle pretty much any content that isn't a lair, plus you tank in lairs way better with a healer. Regen doesn't do that so well.
