Whether you're playing to find potentially game-breaking bugs or just to get a sense of the game before it launches, betas are a magical time for all involved. Specifically, the magic of Final Fantasy XIV's beta has been the sort of magic that ends the world every so often. But luckily for everyone involved in the testing, tonight is the start of phase 2 of the testing, and that marks an important change in the nature of the tests.
Prior to this point, testing was only available when the servers were up, which was not constant. Starting tonight at 7:00 PM PDT (or 10:00 PM EDT), the servers will be up at all times for the second phase of testing. That's according to an official tweet on the game's Twitter feed, which is good news for any and all testers of Final Fantasy XIV. No word yet on whether or not phase 3 involves profit, but the increased availability should be profitable to the players.

The one thing I wish they'd improve upon is the keyboard/mouse camera controls. At the moment they are so terrible that I find myself preferring to play with a gamepad. I never tried FF11, was this the same back then, or did FF11 also control like most MMOs? (as in mowe forward/back with WS and strafe with AS, while controllng turning and camera with the mouse)

I played it with my Dualshock 3 controller this evening and it played a whole lot better then with the mouse and keyboard. Controllers are fine by me and I enjoyed it a lot more tonight then I did previous nights.
FFXI had weird default control settings and played better with a controller too.

I don't understand what Square-Enix is thinking when it's trying to make players buy console controllers for a PC game. It's a PC game, give us smooth PC controls, and not some console-ified port.

FFXI plays extremely well using just a keyboard alone. Don't let the fact that you don't have a cute fuzzy mouse in your hand stop you from playing a good game, and with your hands at the keyboard, you can easily writes messages to people. Actual communication with other humans!

There are countless threads and posts on other forums about how terrible the controls are, so don't try to make it seem like it's everyone else's problem.

2 Day cool downs are still around it seems. They are trying to encourage partying with people who need help with there Leves. I think they need to lessen the cool down to a few hours really. Everyone is gonna play and use up the 3 leves you get and have nothing to do for 2 days unless new players join. But by then your level is too high to want to.
So idk... we'll see.

Replying to where you asked if FFXI handled as bad with the controls and sadly it did. The numpad arrow keys was what you would use to move your character, and using a mouse wasn't a option. It was so clumsy and hard to click anything. To move your camera you would use the normal arrow keys I believe(been a few years since I played, so don't yell if I get a few things wrong. If you stuck with it you would get used to it and it would become second nature. If you used a game pad it was sooo much better though, which is saddening.
The question is why do they keep ignoring something so simple to fix? Add in better mouse support and let people bind any keys to what they want and all of this is fixed. Why they are so hesitant to not remedy this is unknown and a bad omen if you ask some people. They didn't fix it in FFXI, and thus far its not fixed in FFXIV.

About the FFXI controls - I used the mouse to look around (mouse control was easily enabled) and the WASD keys to control my character. Some of the mappings were odd, but I never seemed to have as much trouble as some people appear to have done.

The reason behind controls being designed for a controller instead of KB & Mouse is so that all players are on an even playing experience. Thus if the PC had superior and faster, more refined controls, then we'd have an advantage over a player on console using a controller. Its all about making the game fair for all players, and the primary reason SE never enhanced FFXI on PC while the PS2 slowly died off.
If you think the whining about no jumping, swimming and PvP is bad now, just think about how much worse it'd become if we PC gamers had that superior advantage over console players.
All-in-all this new generation of gamers just need to learn how to adapt to new and unique control methods and not get all bent out of shape over "one" new MMO that doesn't play exactly like everything else. They should all be eagerly intrigued to finally receive an MMO that doesn't copy & paste everything out there already.
And for the record, "Keyboard Only" controls work wonderfully, and are my primary choice! However, while it can take some players a little while to figure them out, which one should do instead of ranting on every MMO board how much they suck at adapting to new controls, once they do; they may find it to be quite exciting and enjoyable too.

You know, I am sorry... not really. This is a crap argument. Does Toyota create a new way to fasten seat belts for every car released? Does Square create a brand new controller with new buttons for every title released on a PS3 or 360?
Do I have to figure out how to adapt to a new keyboard because I buy a Mac or PC? What about a grocery store? There is a reason main checkouts are near the main exit doors and not in the back of the store.
Standards are important. Square is demonstrating their uncompromising ways in infinite levels of ignorance and hardheadedness (sic). We have USB standards, Blu-ray standards. Many many examples. Standing on the Square side of the fence for their poor (unconventional) Kb/Mouse controls on PC is pure fanboism, at it's best. So to allow their audience to "play" together on PC and PS3 they handicap a majority of players who have been playing computer games using UX and control schemes standardized for at least 10 years.
