Worried that Blizzard's Real ID system may be coming to an MMO near you? BioWare Mythic has a few words of reassurance on that point: "No. Never. Never. No." This was the response by Warhammer Online's Carrie Gouskos to Eurogamer when asked if BioWare Mythic was mulling over a Real ID-type feature for its games.
BioWare Mythic's general manager Eugene Evans supported that sentiment and expanded on it: "We wouldn't do it. I'm surprised they did it, and for a group that is so close to their community, it was amazing that they misread it that poorly. I'm pleased to see them reacting to the community. We should all learn to listen to our communities. Their community made it very clear what the right answer is."
This follows the controversial decision -- later retracted by Blizzard -- to force World of Warcraft forum posters to use their real names in an attempt to cut down on trolling and forum spam. Since the controversy, other MMO studios have come out strongly against Real ID, so it's good to see that this includes the folks behind Warhammer Online, Dark Age of Camelot and Star Wars: The Old Republic.

to be clear, Bioware Mythic ≠ Bioware. They are two different entities.

No they not they are all under EA.... EA is everything. Bioware Mythic ≠ Bioware are just labels on Development teams... Like Blizzard is just a label for the Development team of Activision Blizzard!

That is NOT true at all!
Bioware IS part of Bioware Mythic which IS owned by EA.

Tempus, a simple Google search proves you wrong.
"... Now, EA has taken one more step toward folding the two studios together, confirming for GameSpot today that Mythic Entertainment has been renamed BioWare Mythic..." http://www.gamespot.com/news/6268054.html

(grrr...) Copy/Paste fail... The following is from the G4 link above:
"...Muzyka, whose studio [Bioware] is currently developing 'Star Wars: The Old Republic' MMO in collaboration with both Electronic Arts and LucasArts, will become the division's group creative officer..."
Where are you getting SOE is tied into SW:TOR production?

The concept of Real ID is fine, the implementation of Real ID is not.
The current implementation blurs the line further between what is virtual and what is reality. I want to talk to my in-game friends cross-server, cross-faction and cross-game, these features are -good- features. I do not feel the need to show them my name or the real names of my friends, however.
This is -not- Facebook.
If BioWare Mythic or any other company wish to utilize such a feature, at least have some privacy options. I want to be able to mark myself as invisible, I don't want to talk to people every day of the week. I want to be able to -not- show the names of my friends friends, showing my name is fine (it -is- designed for those who you know in real-life or -offline-) but if one of my mates knows another one of my mates then they would already have Real ID set up for each other.
That, and Battle.net is glitchy as hell. Some days it works, most of the time it doesn't.

Why is everyone simply assuming she didn't clear it with EA first?

Yeah, I agree, Bioware definitely has strong pull in EA. Look at the positions Bioware founders have in the company. I just find it kind of inane that everyone ASSUMES she hasn't cleared the position with EA. She is an EA employee, works for an EA studio. They do have internal emails and such. I'm fairly certain she would have had to have a nod from someone with the decision power over such things to make such an announcement.
Bioware is far to tapped in to what their customers want to ever pull a stunt like Real Id, imo.

Absolutely nothing surprising about someone, "so close to their community," in finally assuming a hug opens the way for a grope.
Bioware's 'never' means nothing. An acquisition, an executive board change, or a shift in Conventional Wisdom about privacy; anything's possible. Turbine said never to LOTRO F2P, once. And here we are.

Gratz guys, let's hope every game company comes out saying that real life information will remain fully private.
But the blizz debacle isn't fully over, they still will not let you talk to people cross-realm unless you disclose your account real name. I still wonder how people who will find out my "real" name is Fluffy Bunnykins will know that this is that toon they hve have played with for so long.
