Currently playing the 14 free days I was given, touring Deadfall, getting my next 4 levels, (left when cap was 46 and had crafted all my personal gear). While it is somewhat interesting, I'd prolly burn out again once hitting 50, plus the fact that seeing other people is few and far between, besides towns, makes this a lonely game.

About as much people running around the given areas as EQII had, don't worry about spawn camping unless that's a really popular resource spot.

Probably won't renew after my free 2 weeks, least I picked up my total respec injectors.

I really enjoyed my time in FE, but there's very little in the state of the game that has convinced me to come back.

I'm primarily a pve-er. My clan, however, was heavily into Bloodsports. And many of them have told me that they would come back to the game, if Icarus decided to take a harder line approach with regards to cheaters and exploiters, and fix the bugs that allow those exploits. So far, they've addressed lots of problems with regards to clan wars, but few clans seem to have participated in that -- Blood Sports was the bigger pvp draw, and that's still broken, apparently, and not even mentioned in the state of the game.

Oh and camp-spawning will not be a huge problem, as only those who are flagged for pvp can be attacked. It certainly won't be as big a problem as when a few clans controlled Office Park.

Who else thought that the title implied that this game was finally being shut down? I know I did.

I started playing a few weeks ago, I am currently 31 and while posts like these don't make me feel that great, everything I been hearing in my clan and region chat implies that this is article is dead on. I like this game, but it is a lonely one.

As a new player I agree with almost all of what Ed has to say.

What I would like to point out is that FE is made by a small studio and for the most-part, is pretty good.

A few observations

*Starting out a player is really almost forced into crafting. What is available on vendors is ridiculously expensive and not that good. There are no auction houses in the starter towns, 'drops" are far too infrequent to rely on and quest rewards simply don't initially equip you well enough. So you must craft with takes a lot of time starting out. Given the huge amount of crafting that is available, you can easily get bogged down right out of the bunker.

*although I enjoy FPS games, I really don't like the FE combat all that much. It feels clumsy and is unwieldy at times. I never like the combination of managing "hotbar specials" and click to attack set ups. One or the other.

*Although I do think leveling is a slow going process and it is getting a bit grindy early on...I really don't have any sense of urgency to level quickly to begin with. That isn't necessarily a bad thing but the game world isn't revealing itself to me. I don't really have any sense of purpose aside from scavenging junk, making stuff, and doing the PvE to fuel the crafting of better gear.

*the reason IMHO, that the economy is jacked up is simply because of the expense of everything. To make the first set of "hand guns" in the pistol crafting is a HUGE time and resource investment. So when a newer player goes into the auction vendor, they are prohibitively expensive unless clannies (if they are in a clan) give them the money OR more likely, they just give them the gear themselves and encourage the player to "just craft it themselves".

*As a new player I can honestly say that the impact of the faction system has been nil. I'll come clean and just tell you all that I wouldn't even know how to get into a faction at this point or more importantly "why should I even want to". I mean there are 6 starter towns, why isn't there a factional NPC in my face out the door at least telling me "WHY" I should be interested in joining a faction.

FE is a strange game, It wants to be a sandbox but throws you on a linear ride, it wants you to craft but makes the time (by time I mean not only the actual timer but the scavenging involved also OR the cost of purchasing raw material) and resource investment so high it drives the value of everything up which has the effect of leaving the new player left out.

It wants to leave the choices up to you (put your "destiny" in your hands so to speak) but doesn't give near enough information to make those choices and doesn't connect you well enough to the higher purpose of the game.

Additionally, the "higher purpose" of the game (what to do at or near level cap) seems to be...missing...I'm no advocate of "endgame" but the reality is, "what do you do later on? Why should I keep playing? Why should I care?"...FE hasn't answered those questions yet. The only real driving motivator I have so far is build a car eventually. That's not a very good "hook".

Now for a major new player drawback that I have witness many times in the games "help" chat. Respecs. The game is far to draconian starting out with the respecs. At the learning levels of the game (and that is the key phrase, LEARNING) you can not make it possible for the new player to "damage" his character development irreparably when they don't really have a clue what they are doing yet. This has done nothing but frustrate new players. It also cause people to hoard AP's (the games skill points) until the player is sure they want to do something for fear of damaging their character (unnecessarily gimping your abilities & gameplay out of fear). I know they have added some remedies to this issue but for the starter players it's still an issue. I can log in right now and go on the "help" chat and I can guarantee that there will be someone in this situation.

So what it comes down to is this
The start up in this game is too rough on the new player and that's fine but the consequence is that not a lot of people will continue on with the game once the trials are over, and that is pretty much the reality.
Combine that with the convoluted higher end of the game and you are going to have a lot of folks stop in to check it out but very few stay.

this game is just shit. sorry to have to say that, but it's true. it's somewhat enjoyable the first 10 levels or so, but then the wow'esque quest-grind becomes simply to apparent. i also never had a sense of real direction in the game. nothing is fleshed out and the fps mechanics are sufficient at best. this game just plain out sucks and the cash shop doesn't make that any better.

I played the trail and liked it ( 6.5 out of 10 ). It wasn't anything that great, it was kind of bland and depressing. I liked that it had no elves or orcs, it's refreshing and new. In my honest opinion I think FE would do exceptionally better as f2p. The game has been out long enough and there is no real end game? It has so much potential and hope that it stays around but, I don't see myself going back unless it becomes f2p.

I was there for the beta testing and I called it. Fixed factions and "pvp-anywhere" are what the game needed. Containing pvp to small regions made no sense in a game that was trying to sell itself on post-apocalyptic survival. And the factions... They had the right idea on paper back in beta, but for some stupid pve-bent reason, they decided to make them completely flexible, and the whole "running the wheel" thing, or whatever the hell you call it, is just simply ridiculous. Why would any self-respecting enforcer work with a known Chota, just because the Chota is waving a white flag, and has a ticket from the techs saying he's an ok guy? In my vision of what I was told about the factions back then... he wouldn't. He would lift his shotgun and blow the Chota away.

Leave it to a bunch of crafting, pve junkies to grind such a fine concept into a mortar & pestle full of crap that no one wants.

Back in beta I screamed my virtual lungs out on the forums for at least a week or more for them to consider "pvp-everywhere" and fixing the factions, forcing people to choose a loyalty and stick with it.

I was bumped out of the community back then, and I called it back then.

The game was clunky, suffered from SEVERE performance issues in towns with more than three people in them, and other than the promise of faction-loyal pvp in an apocalyptic wasteland, the game was nothing more than an effort into the realm of waste management.

Have fun running around sifting through an endlessly spawning random assortment of garbage bags folks. This game was born to die.

-z.

Well I don't want to give the wrong impression, frankly I disagree with most of the negative post here.

The game is far better in many respects then many games launched in the last 5+ years.
Sure it's a bit clunky and draconian but it is an exceptional alternative to the army of WoW fantasy clones out there.

These guys have added a massive amount of positive changes in the last few months and it looks like they will continue to do so. IMHO, this game is moving forward in a very positive direction.
Endgame and faction revamp is up next. For a small company, they are doing a pretty good job.

I was a beta tester for this game all that time ago but didnt play at launch purely because I was playing other games and didnt have the time. I probably wouldnt have played anyway as it seemed a bit too convuluted and basic for me at the time. However I have heard it has improved greatly and always intended to give it another try so have been playing the 2 week trial for a few days without any preconceptions about the game.

I was always under the impression it was a twitch based PvE game but judging by this article and the comments, I wont be playing any more as PvP end-game just isnt for me. Not to mention that the gaemplay itself isnt particularly smooth or immersive. Great setting for a game and nice ideas but not quite there yet - hopefully the game will continue to improve for its remaining players.

How can something be convoluted and basic at the same time?

The opposite of convoluted is not basic. Why not take another 3 months to think about it and I look forward to your response.
