The community of Star Wars: The Old Republic did not quite make the Twitter and Facebook goals, so the developers decided to punish us by announcing another species that we will not be able to play. (Just kidding, it wasn't punishment.) In addition to spotlighting fan art and video, this week's Fan Friday column mentions Cathar as being another species players of SWTOR will bump into on their travels across the galaxy. The feline species from the planet bearing the same name was first mentioned by name in Tales of the Jedi: Dark Lords of the Sith, but gamers are probably more familiar with it from the other BioWare game, Knights of the Old Republic. Although the devs did not say where or how the players will run into this highly anticipated species, fans are hoping for a Cathar companion character.
As mentioned above, the social media goal was not reached. Even so, the community team did give the fans some gifts. The Fan Site Kit has been updated with more digital goodies. New avatars, screenshots, and biographical images can now grace your SWTOR fan site. Not to mention, the team has included six new desktop wallpaper images straight from the exciting "Hope" trailer.
Be sure to check out all of this and the amazing new fan art on the official SWTOR site.

Kitty!
Dude's not fluffy enough. Based on the... one image I've ever seen of a Cathar, dude is missing his lion mane.

Where are those wild looking aliens that were twice a human's size and really spindly from Episode 2? Or that robot/insect guy with four arms in the third one? Hopefully they're getting the catgirls and elves (or whatever those bronze people are supposed to be) and all the overdone stuff out of the way and we'll start seeing something actual alien in the coming months.
Literally my only vested interest in the franchise is the really creative alien designs in the newer movies, and right now, Bioware, I am disappoint.

Kaminoans (tall spindly aliens) would be interesting to have in the game.
General Grievous (four armed insect/robot) is a VERY heavily cyborged (like, brain-in-a-jar level) Kaleesh, who looking at Wookiepedia, are pretty much red skinned humanoids.
The problem with the more exotic aliens/characters is that they're just that, and could introduce a lot of troubles in actual game play. For instance, a Kaminoan Smuggler would have some really weird times making use of the cover feature.

Wait, you weren't necessarily talking about them being playable. If that's the case, then don't mind me.

The Cathars is a Expanded Universe species, first apperances was in the old republic comics in the 1990s, also is a companion character in the first KOTOR maded by Bioware. Is an important species in the Old Republic timeline.
Are humanoids lions, and have tail. But they have hair too xD
This screems must show only the head models.

If any of the aforementioned become playable than great. It's absolutely not going to happen, but it's still a great pipedream.
As to the cover thing.... Uh.... Duck lower? Tuck and roll, maybe? People always go on and on about limitations that don't exist for creative and clever developers. If the Smash Bros. folks figured out a way for four legged animals to wield beam sabers than I think the people at Bioware could riddle out a plausible way for a tall alien to use cover.

I would like to point out that the article about the cathar did not confirm or deny if it will be a playable species so your statement of it not being playable is fault.

Well via Darth Hater's live blog of the SWTOR Comic Con panel, they just confirmed ship customization and ship combat. That's a pretty big reveal, and the panel just started.

I'm so sick of cat people being crammed down every game's throats. No lie, there is even a thread on the APB forums asking for cat ears and tails to be added to the damn creator. Enough with the gross furry ERP fetishes already.

They are a race in KotOR so quit with the QQ.
What does a cat race have to do with ERP anyways?

Didn't the Cathar get almost completely wiped out according to KotOR?
Wouldn't they have died out in the 200 yr gap between games?

That was just our normal Friday update... but here is our special Comic-Con update:

First, thank you to all of you who participated in our Comic-Con Reveal mission! While we didn't quite make the numbers, we definitely saw how excited the community is about this and how everyone came together. After all of that, there's no way we could hold back with our special reveal at Comic-Con!
If you’ve been following the news coming out of the Star Wars™: The Old Republic™ panel at Comic-Con International, you’ve heard the announcement that we will indeed have Space Combat as part of the TOR experience! But what does that mean? Space combat is an alternative gameplay experience to the primary game of storytelling, questing, and ground-based combat. In space combat, you fly your personal ship to various “hot spots” on your galaxy map. From there, you will blast your way through asteroid fields, enemy fighters, frigates, destroyers, and a variety of other obstacles that will evoke memories of some of the great Star Wars™ space battles.
To learn more, pick up the October 2010 edition of PC Gamer which hits newsstands starting August 17th for screenshots and an exclusive interview or check back with us in the weeks to come.
