I would contend that G.I.R.L.s spend more money than women.

I just did a study, I surveyed everyone in my guild's and only 4% of the people surveyed admitted they ever purchased virtual items other than subscription time. So like these survey's, that obviously means 96% of online gamers DON'T purchase virtual goods.

See, we all can fix numbers to a desired outcome.

These people haven't met my best friend who likes to buy Gold 200-300 dollars worth at a time. I'm sure he'd give these ladies a run for their...*Puts on sunglasses*...money...*Yeaaaaaaaaaaaaah*

people actually thought a survey from PlaySpan is indicative of real trends?

For the life of me I do not get why massively keeps posting these stories.

Because it is pretty much a guaranteed click-through as enraged MMOers appear to say how wrong the results are and how RMT will suck forever.

Anger creates more page views, which helps with attracting advertisers.

The sample size is also large and it covers a number of different game 'channels', so it is interesting information.

Bypassing the outrage, the interesting thing for me is how low the average is (compared to a sub-fee model)... but if that is (say) $30 a year by 5 million players it would certainly add up.

Massively,

I stopped reading mmorpg.com because they pushed the f2p and item mall too hard.

Please do not make the same mistake.
If you report on "news" then some journalist ethos is required.

You are demonstrating to have none.

I find the survey's results to be plausible. A good deal of the women I know are the worst consumers one could find, no offense to them. They simply cannot resist impulse buying, if they see something they like or that they think is a bargain, they jump on it. Online market places offer many such 'impulse' opportunities, displaying fancy new items, as well as offering flashy sale events.

And to say so is not sexist, merely an observation.

Average women spends $105 per year on virtual goods? Nice to know I'm way above the average. haha Reading more closely virtual goods in the study encompassed online PC and console games, including add-on levels and other DLC. Geez if they count downloadable games that will skew the results entirely, but doesn't appear they did. The study does mention that females have more opportunities to buy virtual goods in casual games than males.
