Final Fantasy XIV's class system is one of the defining elements of the game, as it was in Final Fantasy XI. The game has revealed 18 different classes, or disciplines in the game's parlance, spread across four categories -- war (weapon-using fighters), magic (casters), hand (crafters), and land (gatherers). As it turns out, it's been revealed via Famitsu that the game will launch with 18 playable classes, meaning that we know all of the options for play already. Of course, 18 classes that can share abilities isn't exactly an anemic offering to begin with.
For some players, this might be a bit disappointing, as it means only two casting classes will be available at launch, the thaumaturge and the conjurer. Disciples of the hand are the most numerous, with armourers, blacksmiths, weavers, goldsmiths, carpenters, culinarians, leatherworkers, and alchemists. Miners, botanists, and fishermen round out the disciples of the land, and lancers, archers, gladiators, marauders, and pugilists fill out the disciples of war. While there will be additional classes after launch, it looks like this is what will be in the game to start -- useful information for a Final Fantasy XIV hopeful to chew on.

Wow, 18 classes sounds like a lot until you realize 11 of those are crafters or gatherers. 2 magic classes and 5 physical classes? That's . . . pretty anemic. It's nice, I guess, that they're offering so much variety for the crafters, but it's a bit off-putting to those of us not that interested in crafting.
Admittedly I wasn't that interested in FFXIV to start with, but seeing the class options available has withered what little interest I had.

Seven character classes isn't enough for you? Good luck finding an MMO.

ARC = Archer
LNC = Lancer
MSK = Musketeer (Uses a Gun)
MYS = Mystic (Uses a Mystic Weapon)
THM = Thaumaturge

@zack, lol, new to MMOs are we? I won't bother making a list because I don't have the time or space here to list all the MMOs that have more than 7 classes. However, it's not just the number, but the unbalanced nature of the distribution -- why 4 melee and 2 magic? Why not 3 melee and 3 magic? They created 11 crafting and gathering classes, would it have been so hard to have one more magic class at launch?
@drossrocket, thank you for the helpful response. Do you know anything else about the MYS and ACN classes?

Those classes show up in the .dat files, but have yet to be "turned on" I suspect one of two things. 1) they will be implemented in a later patch or 2) they become available through quests in the game. I'm leaning towards #2
People over at bluegartr (FFXI fansite) have uncovered a lot by going through the beta files. There are speculations on other classes such as Samurai & Assassian. But no solid proof has come from combing through those files yet.
SE has drawn a lot from past FF titles and kinda combined them into 14. 13's stamina bar is used to an extent in 14, a full bar will grant you multiple back to back attacks. or save for fewer but more powerful attacks. FF2 levelign system. the more you use a certin skill or attack the greater skill you aquire with that weapon. FF tactics combination of skills available to all classes.
I suspect that they will take another cue from FF tactics and open up other weapons classes once you reach a certain level of skill with another or a combination of classes. - this is my speculation mind you -
It'll be interesting to say the least. But I'm looking forward to September.

Well, it does say that more classes will be added after launch.

I am very disappointed with the classes in FFXIV. I was looking to recreate my 75 WHM/THF/RDM classes from FFXI and it seems I will be going about things different than planned. I guess since you can supposedly use some skills from other classes you have leveled up I can kind of make a RDM but THF is out of the question. I am also disappointed that the healer is almost a sub-role of the two magic classes. ow maybe once I get in game things will become clear and I will like it this way even better but I don't know. Anyway I am still buying this game in hope of reliving all the fun I had from FFXI.

you can actually recreate those classic role from previous FF series. You just have to pick and choose the skills from each class to get the THF feel.

The article fails to stress that although only 4 melee classes, 2 caster classes and 1 ranged class are available during launch you can mix and match skills from any class to use on any class. It really opens up the customization for each player. Not only that but your character can change between focus from melee to casting to ranged at any time.

Well I really wanted duel daggers, if I have to level three different classes to half make a THF I rather just play a different class.

DOnt get me wrong, i love FF< but this game is notihng like you think it will be. And not in a good way. this game, other then the graphics is 10 years behind any other MMO. u will soon find out for yourself. Sept 30th is about 6 months too soon for this game to be coming out.

I am a little disappointed aswell in only 7 combat classes at launch. I do like the huge variety in DoH and DoL choices. My disappoint doesn't last long though, since you can take abilities from every class and you can truly make your character the way you want it.
Now to figure out if pre-ordering the CE is worth it for those 8 days...

The only thing I have misgivings about in FF14 is the way the game uses heavy instancing for anything outside the cities - almost like guild wars does. I do rpefer my MMOs to be populated, I like running around the world and finding other people, dynamically grouping with strangers in some lost cave becasue we both need a mob at the end of it for a quest.
From what I understand, in FF14, once you accept your quest (from a crystal and not a NPC, no less), you get insta-ported to your zone in the world to do that quest, an instanced portion of the world just for you and your party.
I dont particularly like that. Though it allows for better storytelling I guess, it does so at the cost of making the world feel much more.. lonely.

A lot of games are going this way. It makes for a more enjoyable experience for the cost of feeling alone. It is indeed sad that games are going in this way, but I won't deny that I would rather have it this way.
Fighting over monsters when your out exping or fighting over NM/HNMs all the time really ruins gameplay more than instances in my opinion. I think there needs to be a balance between both where when your instanced you really can't notice it, and once your done your back with people around you.
