It really is odd. I think cryptic did such a great job with pets in CoH, particularly with the Masterminds, but the Controller pets are pretty good too. What happened to that fine work when it comes to Champion pets?

Note: I know some pets still have problems (ie-Ninjas), but IMHO, they are pretty well done.

That can be said about the the whole game. They should of just improved upon their work on CoH and just made CoH 2, and not this Champions thing which is just a big piece of junk.

I personally liked the archetype system in CoH and it seems like a lot less of a headache to balance. I would of preferred a combat system like CoH but brought up to date a little while still remaining complex and mmo-like...not this crap where an energy builder is always on and i pound 1 or 2 buttons endlessly...so boring.

Hopefully somebody develops a good superhero mmo soon

I don't think you're using the term "self sufficient" properly.

MMs in CoV are extremely self-sufficient. Pets are a function of your character, they are not realistically a separate character or the function of another individual player. As a pet master, you are self-sufficient because the pets are an extension of you. This is even more true of CoV than it is of CO because pet binds and pet macros are extremely versatile in the former, giving you very acute control over their performance.

Just because they have a different targeting box and aren't controlled manually (which... they really kind of can be) doesn't mean they should be considered a separate entity.

I do agree with you, though. MMs in CoV are the pimp hotness.

CoH/V's MMs were built with a different idea in mind: they were built as the Tank equivalent for villains. Pets in ChampO aren't designed as part of an overall framework - they were designed as individual powers that could be mixed and matched.

And even CoH/V's MMs at launch suffered complaints about being too easy to kill and that the pet AI was wonky. MMs have been tightened up considerably since then.

ChampO's pets need to be easier to control / manage, absolutely. There also needs to be greater synergies between pets and different powers than there currently are.
