Typically, a new content patch in an MMO is an exciting time, but for the folks over at Allods Online, it's been a bumpy road, to say the least. With changes to the game, including a death penalty that causes items to become cursed with negative stats, players have been crying foul over the focus on cash shop items to overcome penalties. Specifically, Holy Charms, Incense, and Scrolls of Purification are highly desired by the playerbase, who see them as a necessity to level. Unfortunately, all of these items are cash shop only, forcing players to either fork over money or purchase them on the auction house for very high markups.
Due to the widespread complaints, the Allods Online team posted a response to the latest controversy that's hit this free-to-play title. In the article, the team defends the changes and takes the position that cash shop purchases are not required to experience the full game: "We want to assure you that the game has not become Pay-to-Play or Pay-to-Win. At the core of Allods you can still enjoy the game without ever having to worry about spending money. Yes, Holy Charms, Incense, and Scrolls of Purification are only offered through the Item Shop, but they can be purchased from other players and the auction house."
The response concludes by saying that patch 1.1 is the framework for future patches, and the Allods Online team has a long-term view of the MMO's goals and objectives. Read the full response and let us know what you think!

The people have been voting with their feet. Levels 1 - 20 are rife with noobs and people lured in by the event with massively but the rest of the game sucks. Its dead. They've nailed the last nail in the coffin for those who were enjoying the game as it was and paying money. Now the pay money or be punished changes to the game along with the massive nerfs to end game as whole (it now takes for ever to do anything at end game unless you have 12 hours to wait and hope you can find enough people to do anything) have killed the fanbase that has stuck through FOD, stuck through the cash shop debacle adn even stuck through the changes to Heroics a few patches ago.
Allods GMs should just stay quiet if they can't speak the truth of the matter. The changes suck. The only people in the end will be those that have a huge disposable income or have enough time to farm gold on end to afford the necessary items to play the game.
Personally the Allods Team especially the Russians can suck it.

Massively has given this turkey of a game waaay too much free (?) publicity. Allods is clearly requires cash-shop items to properly enjoy the game. Their PR of 'buy with in-game cash from other players' is nothing but spin. Massively should stop reporting on Allods.
As they say in commerce, any publicity is good publicity. (Well, excepting maybe iPhone 4 antenna woes!) Allods deserves none.

No developer will admit that their game has become "Pay to win", so I skip that part entirely and go to the "..but they can be purchased from other players and the auction house."" part. This is probably one of the worst responses they could come up with, it's like saying "deal with it, we aren't changing it". Everyone who plays f2p games knows how overpriced the cash shop items are when bought with ingame currency, handing out a reply like that is admitting that you are either forced to buy the stuff with real money or grind to death to buy the needed items. I am predicting that many people will simply choose not to play the game until the penalty expires, and if they can't use a certain item because of the penalty, they will buy a new one.
A death penalty is added to a game for several reasons, none of which include making the players shell out money. All that "critical building block" stuff has nothing to do with the issue, I doubt that the game will collapse upon itself if they get the death penalty right for once. And for the "Change is a part of every MMO"..I don't know what to say. When defending an opinion, you should provide arguments as to why it is a good choice, not say "You guys fear change", and "deal with it, death penalty is a critical building block in our mmo".
I am not familiar with most of the changes in this patch. I haven't played allods since the closed beta, and even then I only got a character to level 15. It appearad to me that the game is steadily going back on the right track, but reading that response changed my opinion.

Yes, but those players had to buy those items from the item shop... this dev team is so stupid, it is beyond comprehension. However, clearly they are lucking out and profiting, because they aren't changing their stance any. Can't believe people will give these money grubbing people any of their cash when there are plenty of other F2P or subscription games to hand over cash too that won't break the bank.

I'm soo glad i left (vote w/ my feet) waay earlier when i saw the trend that this company is doing with this very Promising MMO. Too bad Greed is the driven force, if they were to look at DDO, they can see that good money can be make with the right kind Management on the Cashshop side.
or better yet. Offer Subscription model on top of their cashshop like DDO.
Too late now. I wouldn't touch anything else from this company.

The Death Penalty does NOT expire. If your items are cursed from dying, a random curse on opening a treasure chest, or randomly when dropped your boned. Your blue, purple and legendary items become worthless negative stat items forever unless you fork out LOTS of gold or some cash everytime. (thats right the curse is not limited to happen on just death but you can actually LOOT items that are cursed and not covered by the holy charms only the purification scrolls)
The game is Grind or Pay unless you want to be punished. A total shit way to run a F2P game.

Seriously...what did you expect? That it would be "Free to play"? That's only a misleading term that they (and all these type of games) use to get you to play. Once you are there, of course they have to make money! So either fill up on gPotatoes or stop complaining.

Other Free-to-Play games let a small percentage of big-spenders fund their game and have been very successful at it.
Allods is attempting to have everyone pay a little instead and I don't think that it is a currently viable option.
Free players in a free-to-play have a lot of value in populating the servers for paying players to group/interact with.

Pity, it is a good game that has a good system up till 20, but now they will have no end game.
When LOTRO goes F2P it will put a nail in this one's coffin since Allods online was the best F2P game otherwise.

Actually, it's not the Russians that are controlling the pricing, etc. It is gPotato that are controlling all the pricing, etc.
Play the game on a Russian server and see the difference. All the items are available on the AH for very cheap, because the cash shop sells them for pennies anyway. Seven of my guild members switched to the Russian game and love it, but I refuse to play through a proxy and in a language I don't understand.
But who cares about this game anyway? I am in the LOTRO F2P beta and LOVE LOVE LOVE it. The cash shop is a convenience, and there are already people that are unlocking higher level content and even expansion packs just by building up their toons. Looks like Turbine will have DDO 2.0 on their hands when they finally make Lord of the Rings Online free to play. I was one of the people that did not drop a penny on DDO, and just bought things on sale with earned points. I will be doing the same thing in LOTRO.... And from the looks of it, it is much easier to do it in LOTRO than in DDO.
