There are plenty of contentious issues in the MMO field, but one of the biggest at the moment is microtransactions. Controversy over the C-Store, the $25 "sparkle pony" and subsequent imitators, and the general balance in the burgeoning free-to-play field have made the players of nearly every game form an opinion. But those who detest the practice can take heart -- according to Hiromichi Tanaka, Final Fantasy XIV will not be including any sort of in-game store. That's from a recent interview from JPgames.de, translated by the FFXIVCore fansite community.
According to Tanaka, Square-Enix isn't necessarily opposed to the idea if the demand is present, but absolutely does not want in-game power to correspond to real-world money. He also confirmed that players will be allowed to pick their server at launch, unlike the server roulette present at Final Fantasy XI's launch. If the interview isn't enough to tide you over, the game's beta has been given a brief writeup from Famitsu (translated from the Japanese), and there's an excellent gallery of screenshots available here. There are just over two months until the launch of Final Fantasy XIV, and they look to be an exciting ride.

I so cannot wait for this game. Hopefully, it'll be something to get me off WoW.

The timing of this game's release is really ideal. Its before any of the other big players release their new games (SWTOR, GW2, even TERA). I hope its good, I think I'll give it a shot.

Is it just me or does the interface look like a clunky mess? I mean FFXI didn't have a great UI either from what I remember.

The UI looks like it suits the gamepad best, they've done some changes to make it better for keyboard control, but there's more to be done in that department before it's actually good.
The UI components can be moved around too.
I don't know about the whole micro transactions thing, they've said this before, I wouldn't take it as meaning there will never be items for sell though it wouldn't surprise me if those items are small in number and have no advantage in game, other then the coolness factor.

That boils down to opinion. I played the beta for 16 hours today and 2 of my friends who were playing with keyboard/mouse said the controls were pretty lackluster. I was using a gamepad however and it controlled perfectly. I loved FFXI's UI, and this one for that matter. They control like Final Fantasy games.

I agree, this is an MMO being released first and foremost on PC, it shouldn't need a gamepad to be convenient to use. I HATE using controllers when I'm playing a pc game.
It does look just as shitty as XI

No Alan it's not released first and foremost on PC, it's just released first on PC.
I wish PC people would get over themselves, there's how many MMOs you can play viably with a controller? Yeah.... I'm all for both types of controls to be used, the more option the better.
However it's a nice switch for those of us who LIKE gamepads. And it'll be nice to play with the playstation community again.

SE is trying hard to keep the look and feel of a traditional FF game, which means controls optimized for a game controller and a menu-driven UI. If you've never played FFXI, the controls & menus may seem unintuitive and needlessly complicated. Can this work for an MMO? Well, it certainly didn't kill FFXI on the PC, but who knows how many people it turned off (or send them to a console version).
The good news is, with some patience it was quite possible to get very adjusted to the controls in XI, so XIV should be the same. Better news would be if SE added the option of switching between optimized controller and optimized mouse / KB input schemes.

It turned me off big time. I felt so confined in both the UI and controls of FFXI. Probably the #1 reason I didn't last.
I'm willing to give it another try, but I agree, a choice would be nice, but I don't see it happening. In their eyes, I'm sure it falls under -- If it ain't broke don't fix it.

Maneuvering through 11's menu could be done very quickly, not this new one. It isn't that responsive and a lot of the times it's hard to tell if the game registered that you even clicked. A lot of comments about people not liking 11's menu means they'll dump this game on the first day if it stays the way it is. I think the best way to describe the new menu style is... invasive

If it's anything like FFXI it's more grindy then Aion.

Yeah, they really should release more games that are free and no purchase required to get the game and no monthly fee. That way they can be up for about 3 months before filing for bankruptcy for having absolutely no income. That would be the ideal game for me at least.

good... micro-transactions would ruin this game like it does every other lame mmo that uses them.

Ok I was not looking at the direction of this game. But the idea of non-MT game sounds wonderful right now. Will pick this one up.
