Game is looking good. Hopefully I can get in the beta test or at least they have a free 14 day trial or something to that effect.

New games, especially MMOs are hard to judge based on reviews and videos. It takes personal play time to determine if its fun for you. This isn't normal RPGs or FPS'.

While I personally will never understand trying to spend 18 hours in a single boss encounter, Im of the opinion that the more choice in bossfights a game has, the better for the consumer. There always will be insane guilds whose name will become the stuff of legends in the game's community - keep those bosses there, keep those insane challenges, make it unsurmountably hard and let guilds have a crack at them, even best them.

The alternative is WoW. You know, the game where every boss has an easymode that everyone can beat. Legends in WoW no longer exist when even pugs, with a little patience (and a 20% HP/dps buff) can defeat the lich king in a 10man group.

"taking both from more recent design and the classic setup of Final Fantasy XI."

As long as they stay far, faaar, FAAAR! Away from the horribly designed boss encounters that existed in 11, I'll be a happy camper. My interest in this game will die if they think of even adding in a 1hr-long boss fight.

Cause hell no, I ain't supporting another 18+ hr bossfight...

Hoe about this, don't fight those bosses and stop bitching about it for the people who do like those bosses.

I agree with jessetaylor

I really like long boss fights, if you dont like it, then don't do them. No need to spoil it for the rest of us

I can't honestly understand how ANYONE can enjoy a boss fight that lasts longer than an hour. Or how anyone can defend one that lasts 18+ hrs, where the only way you can finish it is by sacrificing your health.

First off, the 18 hour boss has a 2 hour cap now. Second off, just because you don't understand how people can enjoy fighting incredibly tough enemies that offer very rich rewards doesn't mean we can't.

Ah, I didn't know that ego, I don't play the game, but at the same time I do try to at least keep up with it, and have never heard anything about a cap being implemented for it, at least no site has talked about it (surprisingly).

Tough though, shouldn't be designed around them being a 1-2hr fight. It should come from the mechanics of the fight.

No game I have played, or can think of, has ever had a boss fight that lasted more than 15-30 minutes. And the reason why, I'd say at least, is that its boring fighting one, and only one, thing for the entire time. Hell, the closest I can think of is Monster Hunter, and only rarely have I finished a fight with just a bit less than 50 minutes. At the same time though, its an action-oriented game, whereas 11 is click and wait, click and wait, click and wait.

The only reason FF11 could get away with it was because of the gear, and people are willing to subject themselves to unhealthy activities to get said gear. The episode of a guild fighting the boss for 18 hours straight is an example of that.

I will say this though, IF the combat system is good, and IF you are capable of breaking parts off to affect the boss, then I'll be more lenient about the length of time a boss takes. However, the longer a boss takes to kill normally, the more its going to suck when I get disconnected for some reason or whatever.

Another thing is that these bosses aren't necessary at all. They aren't even part of the storyline, they're just optional bosses. Optional bosses in Final Fantasy games have always been hard as hell, like the 5 hour boss in FF12. The bosses in the main stories never take longer than a half hour.

The part about 'instances' seems to confuse me. I've played FFXI and WoW for a while and I think that you can consider all the Dynamis runs an instance. You have mobs that you kill for loot or ancient currency, kill a boss, then get locked out for a period of time. The difference is that WoW took it one step further and allowed you to run this several times a day, and get XP, and get good gear as you are leveling up, and not to optimize your gear once you are level capped.

This proves the point that I think turned a lot of people off of FFXI... it's a difficult game. Nothing was ever made easy in that game. Everything required a good group to accomplish, and even that wasn't a guarantee that you would get it done on your first try.

Even the "boss" as people would think of them would spawn at really strange intervals, with a 3 hour window and several different groups going for them at the same time. For those who play WoW... think of the Lich King encounter... if he popped every day at 21-24hour intervals since his time of death, with 30 minute windows for 3 hours and EVERYONE had a chance to claim him to kill him... then imagine your group wipes and another group claims him and kills him. This was kind of like torture in FFXI, but it was accepted by the community, and I'm not really sure why.

I hope they fix the NM issue by making all the bosses spawned, like they did in Sea. That had some issues, but at least you and a group can farm them anytime, not having to wait 3 hours standing at a screen hoping your macro went off to claim a dragon.

The crafting system could also use a bit of tuning, maybe add an automated feature to craft as many items as you have materials. That would really help.

The end-game though is probably the best in any game I've played. The difficulty forces you to have to come back and back again, as even "bosses" that were in the game for 5 years have items that are still useful. And it's always fun to see someone get Faust'd :P

Faust was an awesome fight. I used to go WHM/BLM when my LS ran sky (this was back before WoTG) and getting the right combination of healing, mp management, and enmity management was challenging. I learned much about making every mp count from that fight. :P

My favorite has to be Genbu, though. lolGenbu, yes, but being such a pushover was what made him great. My LS once fought him naked (except for weapons) just for the lulz. We almost wiped, but the BLMs were able to finish him off. Good times, good times.

Word is the beta is a disaster and the game is really bad, everyone complaining that things like you can't play with the mouse and keyboard cause the controls are unplayable.

Where are you getting that "word"? That's not true at all. Many people are quite pleased with the beta, myself included. People that walked in with it expecting to control like WoW are probably disappointed, but I don't think they're SE's main concern.

@Neurotic

No, but it's more centered around a controller. Personally I don't care because I loved the controller controls in FFXI.

FF11 was not considered the worst FF at all. It was my favorite and many others. Different people have different opinions. Just because we enjoy it doesn't make us fanboys. The controls control like FFXI and it plays out a lot like that game. I don't personally care because I played FFXI for 5 years and love that game to death.

Some people like racing or sports games. I don't. But I don't go around spouting how they're terrible and are considered the worst games out there.
