I know, right? Battle gloves to level 70, and then Tarasque mitts till you got raid drops. Maybe if you were lucky you got spiked finger gauntlets instead at 50. I miss my Dragoon.

I'm excited too. That's really interesting that armor is effect based. What are some of the effects?

I do like the retainer system that they have implemented but I don't like that they have done away with the auction house. So now instead of searching a database of player auctions you will have to run all over the world to individually check 1000 retainers to find an item you are looking for???

If by world, you mean the areas set aside for doing this, then yes.
But I do wish for an auction house or search feature.

Cities have a market district, thats where your retainers sell.

Yeah I share this worry too, even with the marketplace, in FFXI you sometimes had to visit 3 auction houses to make sure you were getting the best price or a certain item, because not all AH's were in the same 'region'.

So now it's that problem times 1000. A search function is a must, FFXIAH.com did wonders for looking for items, I don't know if it's possible to have a similar site for FFXIV, and I know nothing of coding. :/

Since it's not stat based does that mean gear will be less important and you won't have to start an entirely new grind after hitting the max level just to get geared for entry level raids to get into more raids and again to get into more.

ie. WoW

The gearing aspect of FFXIV is mainly what drew me to it in the first place. We heard about weapons changing what class you are, of course, it would lead to people questioning how the armour would work.

Being a huge FF fanboy (I completed FF7/FF10 in a week due to being off work with a broken leg. Insert QQ here! :() I simply cannot wait.

I'm both excited and concerned that it'll be out in a little over two months. Great, it's only two months away! But I don't remember reading anything to do with any open beta. Perhaps they're sure of their systems and are gearing up for a server capacity thingy test? (I forget what it's called)

Regardless. Bring on more FFXIV news!

I'll be there before all the gil-sellers setup shop. If the same happens in FFXIV that happened to FFXI i have a feeling it will be a short game for me.

There has to be some sort of way to search for items you are looking for globally, if not its just asking for a spammy trade channel that every one will turn off.

and just with regard to sheer number of retainers on a server there must be some sort of instancing going in the market districts, which while helpful in making sure the servers don't explode, again makes it difficult for a player to find items they want to buy or from a selling standpoint placing your merchant in a location that is heavily trafficked (what are the chances that someone stumbles into merchant zone 6 of 12 and once there checks your moogle?)

player bazaars are a step forward, but not far enough to be better or more desirable than the AH systems used in most MMOs. until players (or guilds) can rent out real estate in the cities, design their own shop interior and place a sign on the store front, there is nothing to make the player bazaar stand out from any other. many games have cities designed with empty building that can work for this, but who knows if we'll ever see it happen.

Final Fantasy XI GMs are serious about keeping the peace, unlike WoW where it's just a trashy community with GMs doing nothing.

If Final Fantasy XIV has a Trading chat it will most likely be policed.

Just a sidenote: I enjoy the column, but as an artist I really love the intro drawings! You should make a gallery of them, I think that would make a great side column one week. :)

My guess is that "retainers" will function very much like a standard AH, just mobile, instead of running to the AH the AH runs to you, and it will search other retainers for you too. They can't possibly be forcing everyone into running a 24/7 bazaar like XI has, as others have pointed out it would be impossible to sell/find anything and the server would just collapse from the thousands. They already told us there are no "classes" and no "exp", technically true but really just twisted it around a lil and gave it a new name.... just like the "new" races.

lol! Well I hope you're right! A moving AH sounds a lot more practical then a moving bazaar and no AH at all.

Is there any possibility of a trial with FFIX? I've never played an FF game since 7 on the psx (and that my kingdoms thing on Wii), and I had NO interest in this one. but Eliot's craziness has single-handedly got me interested enough to want to try this...

The retainer system sounds awfully similar to Everquest's original Bazaar as introduced in Shadows of Luclin about seven years ago. Only without the "Search" function.

That was a non-instanced zone with up to 500 player-character Vendors plus however many buyers were browsing or just hanging out and it was one of the laggiest places ever seen in EQ. They eventually redesigned into a lot of discrete areas, which got rid of the lag but also got rid of the excellent vibrancy and excitement of the original Bazaar.

While it would add an unexpected level of realism if we had to visit each vendor separately every time we wanted to go shopping, I can't imagine they really will launch without some kind of Search function. Not long to wait to find out, anyway!

What is the combat system like? IS it coming along well? I heard some lukewarms responses to what was shown at E3, and that kidna had me worried considering how little time there is to finish up the game before launch. Or maybe the segment they showed at E3 was jsut not that interesting? Regardless, the poor reception the game had at E3 in comparison to say, Tera, did leave m e alittle worried.

Nothing to write home about. They sped things up a bit and everyone uses a stamina system that's pretty similar to WoW's Rogue's energy. This is just my opinion, but it still looks pretty boring.

Overall it boils down to opinion, personally I think it's a huge improvement over the alpha and is quite good itself. I'd prefer it to remain something different from every other MMO again.

But to be honest, if the only thing you're looking for in a game is a super active combat system you should probably be playing street fighter or dynasty warriors. That's never been what Final Fantasy is about, and I have no doubts this one will be any different in terms of storyline and atmosphere.

Dranaerys, I could show you a 10min video of the low level group combat but I can't send the link in public.

If you can contact me somehow I could send it.

Thanks for the offer, but Ill hold off, I was jsut curious as to those who ave played the game, what their thoughts on the combat system was. Im fine with the stamina/energy system, as I played a Rogue on WoW, so Im used to that system, I guess. Sounds like the combat is no Tera but on the plus side its no WoW either. Well, not exactly.

2 months! Gonna be a long wait. :s
