I cared about Kate insofar as I wanted her to NEVER end up with Sawyer, because I liked Juliet too much. Does that count?

I've actually had several really cool IC relationships for my characters. It's absolutely easiest to run them as doomed from the start, though. And the most fun, because frankly, who wants to play a happy romance in a fantasy world? I have one of those in the real world. Then again, I wouldn't dream of trying it with someone I didn't know was totally stable IRL. A lot of people in RPGs are freaking crazy. Kiss IC, and rofl in ventrilo OOC. Keeps everything on the level.

This, many many times over. I've seen exactly the sort of behaviour described here far too often, with one player essentially taking the other for granted.

There are two good moments that stand out. In the first, the other player decided that htey would define our characters' relationship, and didn't seem to let me have an option to say otherwise. Unfortnately, they were also a self-important attention junkie who seemed to thrive off getting attention from others, and constantly were mangling their characters in order to play the hurt/sympathy card. I wised up, but I should have done so later.

The second pretty much treated my character as a prop for their RP - my chracter was doomed to be the "wrong choice""in a love triangle. Of course, they didn't tell me this when they set things up. So naturally when the truth came out ICly and OOCly I was more then a little miffed and felt like I'd wasted a lot of time and emtional effort for nothing.

In both cases, better OOC communication - and I admit I was also lacking here - would have helped.
