Sony Online Entertainment has introduced a new item into their EverQuest II Station Cash Marketplace this week, and, while we're not normally in the habit of reporting on individual microtransaction products, this one bears mentioning if only for its rather shocking price tag.
For the princely sum of 5500 Station Cash (that's $55 USD for those of you counting at home), you can rename your guild and retain all experience gain and guild achievements since its inception. "The choosing of a guild name is a very important rite. To help ensure that your new name is considered carefully, we are introducing the potion at the price of 5500 SC. We believe this price is fair for those who do want a name change, but will also serve as a deterrent to those who might want to frivolously rename their guild every time they have a [kerfluffle] in the lands of Norrath," reads the announcement on the official EverQuest II website.
By way of comparison, kinship name changes in Turbine's Lord of the Rings Online currently cost $12.95 USD.

In Eq2 your guilds rep means a lot, you have guild halls, guild levels, and lots of other things tied into your guild, you don't want guilds changing names like kids with ADD in wow changing every 5 mins.
$55 is nothing, divide that by 30 odd people and you end up with the huge sum of $1.80 each.
Dont like it? choose your name wisely, and live with your consequences, i know it's something hard to fathom in this day and age of short attention spans.

Pitty and Celestian below both have it right - in a good gaming clan or guild, you often share the costs of things like server rental, vent etc, so a higher price for a guild name change is fairly normal - esp. in EQ2 where the guild system is so advanced.

Blimey, thats a bit steep. No matter what excuse they give.

Guilds in lotro don't have 90 levels of features. Sure they have a few measly treats but EQ2 has far more... so changing a guild is a bigger deal. You gotta level the guild up and it's a lot harder than just having a guild sit around for days on end to rank up.
I don't see the problem with the price. I do have a problem with a subscription MMO charging for stuff like this though. EQ1/2 both need to go f2p and stop trying to be a subscription mmo with all the trappings of a f2p.

FFS if you are charging a sub and have a cash shop don't make your prices ten times worse than a f2p mmo. I'm starting to despair for the future of the genre here.

I'm always amazed at the poor spelling of guild names on MMOs. I mean, really? You couldn't take 3 seconds to google the name to make sure it was spelled correctly? And now you're stuck with it for life. Oh scratch that. Now you can fix your stupid mistake for $55.

Exactly.
Cheap at twice the price.
Sensibly, SOE has always based its charges on two alternative requirements. Either to reflect a fair price for the product, or else to deter players from making petty demands through petitions on over-stretched customer support staff who have better uses of their time.
If you insist on calling your guild "The Craapiest Guild in EQ2" you're welcome to have the name changed to correct the typo, but you can pay through the roof for the privilege.
Quite right too!

I don't care how many features a guild has, it's just a freakin name. This price is straight up ridiculous.
At this rate I'm seriously considering not buying DCUO just because SoE is clearly gonna fill that game with gigantic cash shop items too.

This makes me so unbelievably sad. The dev team for DCUO has shown how dedicated they are to making a great game, but as soon as it comes time to start using it to make money, SOE is going to grab the reins and milk it for every penny they can, and probably kill the game in the process.

I will never ever play an SOE title again....they have zero compassion for their subscribers. The marketplace is a rip off....I wanted to transfer a toon from one account I had that was inactive to one that was very active. I paid the for the transfer token...tried to use the token as instructed...then when they asked for payment history info on the inactive account wouldnt move the toon. I lost all of my payment hsitory/banking history/hard copies for all of my previous transactions in a house fire. then they wouldnt refund the token on top of it. I asked for somekind of hint as to which bank it was to give me help to search and call...nothing..nada..zilch....they can all shoot themselves for all I care

I don't even buy the deterrent argument. Do people really believe that?
LotRO doesn't seem to be having problems with wild packs of guilds changing their names every five minutes to avoid being blacklisted by their peers. Come on. All the people in those guilds would have to change their names too, for that to actually work. Most maxed guilds aren't the griefing type anyway. And most griefer guilds wouldn't dream of changing their name -- I've never known a griefer guild that wasn't insanely proud of its antics and the hatred inspired by their brand-name.
This is just a grab for cash. See through it.

Does that get you a premium guild name, adorned with genuine Schwartz crystals and a separate compartment to hold your lipstick?

Offering an option to change the guild name is *very* important in EQ2 but the cost seems out-of-line. $25 seems more reasonable, to me, and easily covers the actual labor costs involved. Changing your character's surname is FREE, however, (with a petition; which itself costs SOE money to process) and it is probably the same amount of work so I have to wonder why there is a cost at all.
If the intent was to prevent frivolous name changes just restrict it to once a year -- do not use money as a deterrent to this behavior.
