Unless you have sealed yourself away from the internet for the past few days, the odds are good that you've heard about Blizzard's decision to make the Real ID service mandatory for forum usage. The result was the sort of enormous fiasco that makes the phrase "PR nightmare" sound far too gentle. And if that wasn't enough injury, GamersFirst is adding a bit of well-deserved insult with its newest promotion -- which re-affirms how important the option of staying anonymous really is while offering a new home for those packing up and leaving Casa de Azeroth.
Executive director Tracy Spaight pulled no punches in a statement on the matter -- "It is an unwarranted intrusion to player privacy to force [players] to disclose their real world identity." The team behind Sword 2, War Rock, and Knight Online (among others) is offering special bonus items until August 9th to players who register in War Rock or Sword 2 with the promotional code StayAnonymous. It's the first public response regarding this debacle we've seen from the industry, but odds are good that it won't be the last. And who doesn't like to get free things just for remaining anonymous?

It's also optional not to sub to their game.

And sorry...your evidence to support that claim is what, Lethality?

As I thought...you don't. And not to embarrass you further but your assumption is incorrect.

If I still played WoW, I might have been a little ticked at this change -- I used to troll on the forums regularly on my work breaks. Haha. However, the WoW community needs major work/policing/whatever. It was one of the big reasons I quit playing. So who knows, maybe this will make things better.

It's not optional to post on the forums if you have technical problems. Fansites may assist you on things like class guides and quests, but technical issues are always best covered on a game's official board with input from the developer's technical support staff.

Technical issues can be handlied via phone or email, nothing is forcing you to use the forums. If you don't want your name revealed, don't post. Simple as that.

They actually tell you to phone in when you post on the forums. Even when you email them you get told to phone them.

Just letting you know, Juelz.
After a recent technical issues and spending an hour on the line with "Phone" support. I was told to post on the issue on the forums...
So yeah, it's totally optional.

BTW, when you pay a subscription, it's to keep the game you're playing rolling, receive more content and receive support, support that is given on the forums.
Have you ever tried filling a bug report? I have, several times, each time I am told to report it on the bug report forums. So what should I do next time? Keep the bug to myself and exploit it and risk the chance of getting banned? (See: Lich King first kill controversy).
Then you have suggestions, which much also be posted on the forums.
Then you have the problem of the exodus that will happen to third-party forums. Going on third-party forums is a pretty big security breach, since you leave yourself open to website corruption and potential password database upload (That is, if you used the same password, they can still get the e-mail and your forum account name, which is enough to start spamming you.).
The forums would be optional if no announcement were made there, if there were only discussion between players.
Where did they announce the new RealID system? Where did they announce the new revamp to talent trees?

Lol. Actually...and more on topic, this article does remind of a paradoy post on the General Forums of Bioware thanking Activision/Blizz for sending millions of customers their way. :)

We (GamersFirst) decided not to be so rude. We have a firm feeling that what is happening is not right and we want to let players who may not know us, know how we feel.
I'm not gonna lie, as soon as that was announced people were screaming (and laughing) in our office. It just strikes us as something that isn't condusive to building and managing a community. There are millions of other ways to make people behave on forums that do not include forcing them to reveal their identity.
Just making it so when you post every character you have can be revealed would be more than enough to have the exact same effect. This change by them seems to be: "Play nice or you may get assaulted". That to us, is not in the best interest of our gamers or our company and we think people should know that.
By the way, that code is actually live on our site right now ;).

If Blizzard regarded it as a "PR nightmare", wouldn't they have made some kind of official response to the uproar?
I find the silence really... strange? arrogant? loaded.
Anyway, you know the saying, "Any publicity is good publicity." And since they got at least 1 renewed sub out of this fiasco (mine), that seems to be a little true. And before you ask, I didn't renew BECAUSE of realid, but all the blizzard talk got me thinking that I miss wow.
