Han Solo as a TIE fighter pilot? That's so wrong. The EU can be such a fanwank. There are some good things in it, but there's a whole lot of eyerolling stuff, too.

Good article, though. I enjoyed it.

Yep. Han Solo was in the Imperial Navy for a while. Did you not know this? :)

But it was only for, like, two seconds, so it doesn't really count :-D

Man, Han Solo has done EVERYTHING!

Work of art? Yep, Blind warrior? Oh yeah! Hot shot ace pilot? Si! Ace marksman? Hai! Why, he's even done a stint as Prince Charming, Adventurer, Archeologist Extraordinaire, even a man looking for his daughter!

Um, Han being an ex-Imperial is SW lore that goes all the way back to the time of the first film's release -- even before there was a dreaded "Expended Universe". I know, I was a young teenager at the time.

George Lucas spoke more than once about how Han was "a former Imperial officer" (he also mentioned that Han's side-piped pants in the first film were possibly the last remnant of his former uniform).

Han's rejection of Imperial service culminated in his saving Chewbacca from slavery/detention, an act which forged their lasting friendship.

Again, all of this is from George himself, before there ever was an "Expanded Universe". Use your Google-Fu -- there has to be a record of it out there somewhere.

Follow-Up: The /details/ of Han's Imperial service and bond with Chewbacca listed above are Expanded Universe pseudo-fanfic which came later -- but the /idea/ that Han is an ex-Imperial who "threw away his career" willingly when he rescued Chewbacca -- that comes straight from george lucas himself.
