I feel like it's significant that we're still talking about leveling gaps in a game that is over 2 years old.

Yeah, it's a bit strange to talk about leveling gaps, even if it is only mentioned in the article title, since there aren't any leveling gaps.

Leveled a char from start to L80 the last few months, didn't encounter any gaps.

There are some perceived gaps from a new player perspective, simply because the game does a relatively poor job of directing people (particularly Stygians) when they're level 30 content runs out.

Several of my guildmates experienced this, and their questions to me about where to go prompted the article.

Ah, like that. Yeah, you have to look around a bit to find the quests for your level range.

All in all, nice and handy listing of the zones and dungeons and such.

I did try Age of Conan last week, and end up removing it again for several reasons....

1. Mess around with the settings to make the game work better and look like the pics.

2. in the 23 hours I try to play it client did crash almost 18 times and random freezes with way over recommend system! I also did turn off things like shadow to see of it did help but the game did keep freezing on me over and over.

3. Real slow start of the client and next of that you gotta click tru like 3/4 logos to get to the login screen, it did take me like 8-11 mins from start up to ingame. (what for me is really bad I like games that you start up and can play if you got like 15 mins in the day and do fast a quest or something. Check ah...)

4. The animations apart of a few are really bad the Jump animation is one of the worst I ever seen.

5. Voice of your character when I was playing my wife was thinking I was looking a porn movie... yet I did try both male and female toons! OMG what where they thinking... Is it really so hard to voice act combat sounds...?!

6. Flying in mid air weapons sure World of Warcraft use this tech also but they did try display the weapon more close to the body of you character in AoC there is a huge cap between the weapon and you and really look weird over the great graphics.

7. After spend about 23 hours playing. (I checked /played hope its not bugged). I got really bored I try Ranger/priest/bear shaman none of the classes did do anything for me. the story did overall bored me as well... it had some moment in the volcano for example but overall it did just drag on and on and after you go to the main land the voice overs pretty much are gone still... I do not known about the new level 20 something zone they added in the new xp I am sure its better them what I got here :P

Anyway if someone want a EU account with the full game of AoC and like 8 days game time on it let me known! (no xp)

Even when I did not crash 18 times my other points are still valid and I am not Deadelon/Iceice just a legal owner of AoC that payed full price for the client and got ripoff with euro VS Dollar! And I am willing to give my Age of Conan account away for free!

" it did take me like 8-11 mins from start up to ingame"

That and the frequent client crashes simply don't sound like normal performance on a machine that you say is way over the recommended system. I'd be interested to know what your system specs are and also what drivers you're using as well as other things running in the background, and whether the system has been fully checked for viruses and malware, and the hard drive defragmented.

I don't question for a moment that some people do still have performance issues with AoC but the game simply doesn't take 8-11 minutes to load up on a decent computer so something's wrong somewhere.

My system is running on windows 7 and does not got any virus or malware. All drivers are updated with last version that did come out! System specs are way up there. I think it likely was Adobe flash CS4 running in the background :(

Jeff- I leveled my character to level 80 pre expansion. I didn't feel there were any level gaps at all. There was at launch. I had to discover the world which for my personality I like. I like the freedom of choice I had to discover. You can also look at the map and click the gates to a new zone and it states the levels in an image that is very clear. The map works pretty well these days and points it out.

But I can undertsand what your pointing out for new players or people who prefer being led. This is what I hated about the Legacy quests in SWG. It just stopped.

Yeah it's not as bad as some people make it out to be. I played early on as well (launch to whenever WAR came out) and got to the low 70s without any quest guides or anything.

I think a lot of folks just expect direction when coming from WoW or other well-documented games. Nothing wrong with that, but it is fun to wander like you say.

About the map level listings yeah, I used that extensively in writing this up.

Jeff - you know what sucks right now? I can' t play! I am on vacation in San Diego and can't play this week! LOL. I really appreciate your articles. I have learned some things about the game that I didn't know.

Thanks for the kind words.

I know the feeling, I'll be upgrading my laptop before I take vacation in a few weeks just so I can play a bit of AoC while I'm away from home, ha.

I think what throws people off with this game is the fact that it is extremely linear until about level 30 then it suddenly cuts you off content-wise to seek it out on your own with no warning or hints. This does give an initial impression that "the content runs out".

What this usually means is it is time to move on from an area.

Once you start looking around and leave your home area, content is pretty easy to come by but you need to go look for it.

That's not necessarily a bad thing but the game tends to switch gears suddenly and if you aren't anticipating that change, it can be pretty frustrating.
It's good in the sense that you are forced to travel around and look for opportunities and play the game like a "bot" to level cap.

I recently leveled a char to 80, then I pretty much quit when I found out that the cool-sounding stuff in the expansion (the AA-system, the factions and Khitai) was basically just a HUGE grindfest. Usually I don't really mind grinding a bit, but having to grind the same quests for like 18 hours in NGL just to get a Rank 1 blue item is a bit extreme for me.

@Jack:
1. Disable the shadow and godray options from the DX10 settings and you should have no problems with FPS.
2. If it crashed 18 times then it's something wrong with your system. I also have a way above recommended system and I have only had a crash once.
3. For me most zones take less then a minute to load, if you had 8-11 min load times then you should really check your system.
4. I can agree then the jump animation is pretty bad, but most of the other animations in the game are pretty awesome.. specially the fatalities.
5. Somehow I doubt this is true..
6. Does it really bother you that much that 2-handed weapons are not perfectly positioned against the back of the charcter when they are holstered?
7. If you didn't find the combat system or quests the least bit interesting then that is your opinion and I won't blame you for it, but please be honest and say that this is the main reason you gave up.. Don't list a bunch of lies and half-thruths as the reason you quit.

@Jack: "System specs are way up there."

So what are they? CPU, graphics card, memory, sound card, PSU? Desktop or laptop? Also, Windows 7 is common to some crashing problems as evident from the European official forums.

I leveled to 55 or so with no "gaps". Hell, Gateway to Khitai will get you to 40 and still have crap left over.

Gray quests still award EXP when turned in, too.

@Daedalon: You do realise that you're talking out of your ass, and that you go out of your way to only post anti-AoC hater posts, just because you never got over your AoC launch hurt like other well adjusted, sensible people could?

Really, continuing a AoC hate campaign still after 2 YEARS does make you come over a bit deranged. Just my 2 pennies.

About the leveling gap: there were a few leveling gaps at launch, but all those have been filled via the content updates (Ymir's Pass, Tarantia Commons, Slaughterhouse) that have been released in the meantime.

Animations are bad?

What game are you playing? 'Cause it sure as hell ain't AoC. AoC has some of the absolute best combat animations I have ever seen. They are smooth and motion captured and blow away any other animations I have seen in other MMOs.

I crash very, very infrequently. In the time I have played, and I have played for awhile now, I have crashed just a handful of times and those were caused by alt-tabbing out of the client. There has to be something wrong with your system or you are lying through your teeth. I tend to think the latter.

Combat sounds are pretty nice, certainly better than WoW, Aion and most other MMOs I have tried. At no point do they sound like "porn".

**DELETED BY EDITOR -- THAT WAS WAY OUT OF LINE, CONSIDER THIS A WARNING -BREE**

There are problems with AoC but overall I think it is one of the best MMOs out there. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time in Hyboria. The PvE is awesome, the PvP needs some work but it is a fun game.
