Tony "Teesquared" Tyson, producer on Sony Online Entertainment's Star Wars Galaxies, has posted a producer's letter on the official SWG website that mentions a few noteworthy additions in store for the long-running sandbox title. He also takes a brief moment to tease some new content in the works, hinted at in the screenshot above. The letter talks about everything from Galactic Civil War and profession tweaks, to no-trade removal, to a new rare loot system.
"The Rare Loot System will allow us to add some really cool loot to the game that players will have a chance to loot off of any mob they encounter. There are restrictions however. The restrictions are in place so that farming mobs or generally killing trash mobs (AOE FTW) won't give you a chance to get this new loot. You have to play the game and fight challenging mobs to earn a chance to find this loot," Tyson says.

When will SWG go f2p is a question that should be asked more often. All of the SOE's games need to be really now that I think of it. Oh I'm sorry that was off topic...

I often ask this question because i am sure SWG would go mental if it went f2p.

I know why won't they go for f2p?! The game hasn't aged well, and it really isn't worth playing as p2p. I played the trial and thought it was ok, it brought back some memories, some good some bad. I don't know what they'll do when TOR comes out.

I saw this yesterday and I was wondering a bit on the mechanics - is it some sort of "internal 'dkp' system" - the more often you kill a a boss, the higher your chances based on some counter? A boss enconter I can imagine that way, but apparently this goes for regular mobs as well, and those you can farm, thus you increase your chances? The latter wouldn't make much sense versus a regular farming approach, in the contrary, it would invite to do so.

Heh, I'd like to see them try. Whatever restriction they've got in place, powergamers will figure it out and optimize the hell out of it - gamers have farmed raid-level mobs ("Onyxia on farm" "Hamidon Sundays" etc), they've farmed series of missions (CoH task force merits), they've farmed herb and resource node spawn locations (WoW, LOTRO, no doubt tons of other games), they've farmed faction, Guild Wars has "farm" builds for specific areas...
CoH salvage was by definition random chance drop, but since magic salvage ended up on tougher mob factions (by lore), the demand was higher, and people farmed those.
If the restriction is on a specific type of mob, then they'll just vary the mob types and rinse and repeat. Time-based restriction might stand a chance, if only by limiting how often the loot drops for a character or account.

For current players who are devoted to the game they will love it. But exploiters will always find a way. There are back doors on Mustafar that to this day people use. They are throughout the entire game. But for the SWG players I don't think a free to play model is due right now. I think the SWG community has gone through enough since the NGE days. Plus the crafters got the shaft with the card game. I still think they should crank the textures in the engine settings. The beauty of the game is hindered and can easily be shown. The communtiy is very tight for the Imperials.
