Aion's recently announced server merges have been pushed back a couple of weeks and are now scheduled to take place on July 14th. The delay is apparently the result of name conflicts between players with the same moniker on servers that are scheduled to merge, and NCsoft has decided to take a bit of extra time to smooth the process.
In a nutshell, the name changes are likely to affect a small percentage of characters, and NCsoft will be adding one or two letters onto the end of duplicate names depending on original name length. Additionally, all daevas will be given a free name-change. "When the merge maintenance is completed on July 14th, 2010, you'll be able to log in and use your free Character Name Change ticket to change your name. All uses of that Character Name Change ticket will be on a first come, first served basis," NCsoft said in a press release.

A complete slap in the face to the player base, especially those of us that pre-ordered Aion.
Wow, can the people running NCWest be any more incompetent? It is totally amateur hour there and they seem to be doing their best to drive this game into the ground as fast as they can. If they were working for me I'd have fired the entire bunch long before this screw up. How they can keep their jobs is beyond me, other than I guess NCSoft Korea has already written off the western market for Aion.
I just hope ArenaNet will watch this disaster and learn from it, although the GW1 live team (which does great designs, don't get me wrong) also doesn't seem able to deal with changes to their game's database, just witness the Xunlai Tournament House fiasco. Scary that they share offices with NCWest and apparently similar ideas on how to run things!
NCSoft, please hire some PROFESSIONALS to run Aion!
