Game developers who can laugh at themselves are a lot of fun, but game developers who laugh at other games are a veritable barrel of monkeys. Enter Wargaming.net, the team behind the upcoming World of Tanks MMO. Their newest trailer, simply titled World of Tanks Teaser #3, spends the majority of its minute-and-a-half running time taking pot-shots at CCP's EVE Online.
The trailer, sporting a decidely tongue-in-cheek style, shows the months of work ostensibly necessary to upgrade your EVE-like spaceship, all of which goes to pot in seconds as it enters combat for the first time.
While unorthodox game marketing campaigns are nothing new (remember Global Agenda's No Elves?), it is rare to see a firm directly reference a competitor. Check out the new World of Tanks teaser after the cut or on YouTube.

I would not have thought that they share a target audience past they are both MMO's. Seems kind of random to me.

Agreed. I play EVE(disclaimer: I am not raging), and I just can't see the crossover audience. Frankly, I wouldn't have connected the ad with EVE without Massively pointing it out.

Mocking certain aspects of other games is fine, but I think when you're clearly mocking a specific game it's just a bit unprofessional (Just my opinion).

problem is if Tanks falls short they will have opened themselves up to ridicule. not that i care for EvE the game but i think criticism is better done by review and commentary sites, and developers should focus on making a good game.

If tank falls short, they open themselves to ridicule regardless of whether they made fun of other games on the way there or not. Heck, even if it succeeds they are open to ridicule. Look at most other MMO player's attitude towards WoW, and WoW is the polar opposite of 'falling short'.

But Eve is actually about your character's skills that take forever to build up, not your totally replaceable space ship. I really dislike this "insult" advertising to begin with (talk about your own merits, don't try to insult someone else, what are you, my Dad?) - but beyond that Eve is about your character's skills. Everything else can be replaced. Why insult one of the few different games out there? Thanks World of Tanks, but no Tanks :P I have no interest in even checking out games that use insult advertising to be honest.

I have to admit, I don't really get it. Is there a potentially large crossover audience between EVE and WoT? Is it saying that WoT is more arcade-like in its player progression? (I don't say that as a negative; I simply mean that it's less concerned with the minutia that make up EVE's gameplay). What exactly is the trailer advertising?

I think the joke would have been better had they just shown the end part with the uninteresting ship fighting and the tank blowing one of them up from the planet below.

This reminds me of those bad company 2 PSA trailers. I think it's a bad practice to outright insult your competitor rather than really showing what you bring to the table. (see: mac commercials)
You don't see games like Guild Wars 2 and FFXIV making trailers talking about how boring WoW is.

...Or you can make a hackintosh, even though it doesn't really take "hacking skillz" anymore. ;)

I thought it was sorta cute and funny, but... I don't see the need for competition between the two? They're MMOs, PvP based, take part in vehicles instead of actual characters... But the gameplay doesn't sound similar at all. If anything, this might give Global Agenda more competition.

I played EvE for a while and it just REALLY is not for me but if your best advertisement dollars are being spent on insulting other games more than showcasing yours, you're going to fail and i'll hope you do. Don't care for EvE and as much as i want to like it, i just think it's beyond me, but I won't be playing WoT if all they have is insults.

I found this hilarious as hell, and a good shot. Stop being so uptight, and just laugh a bit.

Ya I'd have to say the fact the eve ship got destroyed by a tank on the ground clinched this ad for me. I don't see any harm done. With the lack of intuitive big market games out there I find it good that devs know there are things that gamers will not tolerate by the masses.
