We'll take "things we didn't see coming" for 5000, Alex. What would that be? Well, in a nutshell, Craig Zinkievich, Executive Producer on Star Trek Online and seven-year vet of Cryptic Studios, has announced his plans to step down. The long open-letter posted on the Star Trek Online official site is titled "What you leave behind" and indicates that his intent is to "take a break" allowing him to enjoy "hanging out with [his] kids over the summer, walking [his] goat more and taking care of [his] bees."
As to just what his plans for the future are, and whether or not they may involve a return to Cryptic Studios in the future, he does not say. In the meantime, Daniel Stahl will step into his position as Star Trek Online's new Executive Producer. According to both Zinkievich's note and Stahl's own profile on the STO site, the game's future trajectory appears to be in capable hands. We wish Zinkievich the best with his children and his goaty kids -- and may he especially never wind up covered in bees.

Any idea if he's taking Sector Space with him?

I think everyone knew this was coming, it was as predictable as Roper getting his "promotion" from CO.

I'm not sure getting off the stop before the train wreck can be considered negative speculation as opposed to simply a decent sense of self preservation as far as his future career goes.
I suspect Jack Emmert has been sharing the wisdom of such a move with Craig.
lol.

I'm afraid that when someone "steps down" from a job in the toughest employment market for a generation without another job to go to and in order to "hang out with his kids", there will always be a temptation to assume that he didn't leave of his own accord....

...or he might actually enjoy a carrier as a goat herder, house husband and bee keeper over that of a big time game developer...
...I know. But we're not allowed to negativley speculate here. >.>

Walking his goat instead of STO? The twists and turns of this games lifespan are epic on the scale of fail.

You know where's a good place to walk your goat?
Sakura Park.

thank god, now maybe STO can get going in the right direction. This guy did more interviews than he did good things for the game.

You'd think this'd be the news of the day for them, but Cryptic just announced their own Sparkle Pony.......they'll be putting up the Galaxy X for 2000 Cryptic Points AKA the infamous $25 price point. You can still get it for free by referring 5 people to the game.....but I'm still not a happy camper.
Was hoping beyond hope they wouldn't follow this trend...thanks a bunch Blizzard. I quit WoW and I still can't get away from you...

Atari's been far more cynical and active about pimping out their entire game for cash than Blizzard ever has been.
Say what you want about the original sparkle pony, in the end it's just a cosmetic change from a normal flying mount, so you could avoid it and suffer no disadvantage.
The Galaxy X on the other hand has significant advantages that are unique to that ship alone. You're literally being offered the chance for a potential in game advantage for the low low price of 25 bucks. You can't blame that on Blizzard.

Lets see how this one goes. How is dear old Cryptic these days?
Well good luck to him, and hope I never see another Cryptic game again. Oh wait they will be releasing one soon, it has been almost a year since their last game.
