Unfortunately, encounters similar to what you described are fairly common in the higher tier exploration. Dref are pretty annoying, but IMHO Starlians are the worst. I have had my BOs one shotted several times by these mobs. Cryptic has been aware of it for quite some time, and I can only hope season 2 will finally bring a fix.

It's all good advice. Almost makes me want to come back for a while. Not right now though.

In case you missed it, re #1, "focus fire on my target" is mapped to the "y" key by default. I use it a lot. I don't use it in every fight because NPCs spread out their damage more, make it easier for my medic(s) and engineer(s) to keep up, when my bridge officers are spreading their damage around. But I concentrate my personal attacks, and then if I'm having trouble taking them down I focus my teams' attention, on enemies in the same order you mention in #4.

My new rule of thumb for away teams is to take 1 of each, and 2 of whatever I am. Why? Because the stat-boosting passive skills that I train also boost the stats of bridge officers of the same type as me. So (for example) if I'm on a tactical captain, I take 1 medic, 1 engineer, and 2 red-shirts, because the red-shirts benefit from all of my tactical skills. If I'm on a science captain, I take a medic, a scientist, an engineer, and a red-shirt.

One of the several reasons I quit City of Heroes for Star Trek Online is that the level of minion customization in STO is what I always wished CoH masterminds were like: I really, really love being able to design everything about my bridge officers from their uniforms to their weapons to their abilities.

I do the same, InfamousBrad. I only take one tactical and one engineer BO. My main is a science officer so I take two of those with me - one healer, one crowd control. Depending upon the enemy type I then switch kits depending on how hammered I am getting - healer / crowd control.

It's also worth noting that when kitting up your BO's that it is essential to equip them with weapons that can expose mobs (the orange flashing target appears), allowing any of your team (and yourself) to exploit that mob and usually vapourize them. I cannot stress enough how often this turns the tide of a ground battle. For example, I use a polaron sniper rifle. Between me and my science officer BO we can almost always expose a random mob once per 10-20 seconds thanks to the Tachyon Harmonic ability . I then cycle to this exposed mob with the tab key and use the sniper shot ability dealing usually over 1200 hpts of damage. I just love vapourising mobs!!!

I also rarely use focused fire unless I see an enemies which is particularily nasty. Then yes this is very useful...

One thing I have noticed that I SWEAR is a bug is the exploration missions - you know where you have to explore the Yawn System in the BLah Blah Who Cares 3 Cluster? If you are unfortunate enough to be given a random mission which involves ground combat you will notice that the mobs are extraordinarily powerful or is it me?
