The speculation for Final Fantasy XIV's eager fanbase can finally come to an end. Square-Enix's hotly anticipated MMORPG has an official release date, and contrary to the expectations of many it's not at the absolute end of the year. The game will officially launch on the PC on September 22nd -- and September 30th. In addition to the official release announcement, Square has disclosed the bonuses for the Collector's Edition, and one of those bonuses is a full week's early access.
The Collector's Edition, which retails for $74.99 instead of the standard version's $49.99, will also include an exclusive in-game item, a security token, a travel journal with concept art, and a special cover with art by Yoshitako Amano. Both versions include 30 days of free game time, with subsequent months priced at $12.99. No word on whether the fee will increase for additional characters a la Final Fantasy XI. If you can't wait for another three months, however, you can take heart in the promise that Final Fantasy XIV's beta will start in early July. It's not quite as good as launch, but we're sure it'll ease the scant time remaining.
[Editor's Note: As an additional note, extra character slots in the game will cost $3.00 per month, much like Final Fantasy XI's $1 per month character slots. However, if you wish to have another character for inventory purposes in FFXIV, then the cost is still only $1 dollar. So, to recap, a playable character slot in FFXIV is $3.00 per month, while a non-playing "inventory use only" character is $1 dollar per month. ~Sera]

Man, FFXI just got so much better, but this makes it tough to justify remaining subscribed.

I am shocked that it's being released this year. Completely shocked.

Me too, especially at the end of September. That's just a few months away, wow.

Additional characters will cost $3.00 each, per month. And the PS3 version will not launch before March 2011. Two very bad decisions, IMO.
There's a great writeup with the details regarding the FFXIV launch here:

That additional character price is what initially turned me off to FFXI and got me so enthralled with WoW. I realize FFXIV's system will work differently in that each character will be able to explore every class, but I still think it's crazy that they're charging their players to experiment with character races and appearances.

Perhaps they'll introduce premium services similar to WoW's and Aion's, and we'll be able to pay a one time fee to convert our Galkas to Elvaans. Err, Roegadyns to Elezens I mean! =)
Seriously though, I'm almost sure they'll announce services like these either just before or soon after launch: Server Transfers, Race Change, Sex Change, Name Change, Pets, Mounts, Etc. There is no way Square-Enix is going to miss out on making some extra money on the side for offering these services to players, especially when every other major MMO is offering similar services. Heck, for an extra $25 at launch, you can already get, to quote Eliot, "an exclusive in-game item, a security token, a travel journal with concept art, and a special cover with art by Yoshitako Amano." Oh yeah, and a full week's early access too. It ain't a Sparkle Pony, but all that seems pretty shiny to me...

Retainers are more than just extra storage. They will also act as your way of selling items in a bazaar type model. As the auction house / retainer system hasn't been seen in action yet, it is unclear on how you will search retainers. But retainers are a mix of storage and bazaar.

I have not played ff11, though the idea of economically encouraging players to stay on one character is... interesting, at least. Supposedly the class system in ff14 is flexible enough that continuously playing one character will be enough fun.

Urthaz according to the way square has done things in the past only 1 character is needed since they can be all classes. So yea you can enjoy it, the only thing you might be down is storage space and i dont think that will be much of an issue for quite some time.
Too bad about teh ps3 version but eh pretty much everyone has a pc now a days and they can enjoy it on there.
PS: WOOOOOT finally i can give wow a break im getting soooooo bored of playing that game

You don't need alts in FFXIV. 3 dollars is a lot, but only die hard RP'ers want to have more than one character in the first place. Everything, and I mean everything, can be done with a single character.
I think that's the most important decision. Race/class limitations? Can't play more classes on single character? To hell with that BS.

I can't wait for this game. I haven't played a MMO in months vowing that I wouldn't return to one unless this came out. I even shelled out $150 on a new graphics card just so i can enjoy this game at its fullest. :D

FFXIV Core is also reporting you get 8 playing chars and 1 retainer (mule) char on the account. More will cost extra per month.

What do you mean when you list the release date as being both Sept 22nd and Sept 30th? I'm confused. Which is the real release date?

@thecoke:
Not to discredit you, but iirc correctly ffxi also had extra character slots. However, if you wanted to create another character, you got charged $1. So it could very well be that you have xtra slots, but to "activate" them, so to speak, will cost money. Still, like everyone is saying here, you can do everything with one toon in ff.
