free to try would be bad imagine how many gold farmers there would be lol

Unless they only allowed them to play on a special server just for free trial accounts.

I've tried to read a few of the posts in this topic but it's making my brain hurt.

How come people are completely literate in Barrens Chat but when they post here it's like English is their sixth language?

Or is that we can debate any other topic here with total literacy but as soon as WoW is the subject only the semi-literates respond?

Blizzard have no more reason to go F2P than SOE. Both are already taking a full monthly subscription and running a cash shop, what on earth could induce either of them to opt for something less?

LOL Tempes. That little paragraph makes little to NO sense. PR nonsense indeed!

@Tempes Magus: Where on earth did I challenge the basis of the article? Of course I know why the issue was brought up here, I read the article and even gave my own view on the issue.

It was the literacy of some of the early posts about it that I was critical of, not the article itself!

The industry will be watching LOTRO very carefully in the fall. If it's revenues go up like DDO's did, other AAA's are sure to follow.

@Tempes Magus: Where on earth did I give the slightest indication that I thought "the players or posters here pulled that out of their hats"?

I was commenting on posts like:-

"It makes perfect since if you want to pre pay for a select ours or get a the regular all you can play like APB it would make since."

I was not questioning the legitimacy of the article, and gave my own view on the issue it raised. It relates, of course, to what is essentially a non-issue in the sense that Blizzard having given half a thought to something which they immediately dismissed is hardly an exciting news item, is it? However, the interview is in itself a news item and therefore Massively was quite right to report it.

Daemondand commented:-

"The industry will be watching LOTRO very carefully in the fall. If it's revenues go up like DDO's did, other AAA's are sure to follow."

Now that I do agree with, it is both inevitable and highly desirable in that such an approach gives every type of player of MMO's the maximum choice as to how they play a game and pay for it. If it also means the elitists quit the genre on some half-baked point of principle then that's an added bonus ;)!

Tempes Magus commented:-

"I wouldn't consider that so bad, and I definitely would not have claimed that this brought out "many illiterates" as you did because of just one bad post."

So your tactics have switched now from making false interpretations of my comments to misquoting me entirely?

I see. I suggest we both move on.

Blizzard is keeping an open mind on the subject which is good. Lets be honest, WoW has probably another 5 years before it starts to really go down hard in subs. At that point, it might make sense for Blizzard to pull a Turbine trick to eek out a bit more revenue from (at that point) a very old MMO. Hopefully by then they will have at least ANNOUNCED their new MMO, but knowing Blizzard, even that is a stretch.

Last time I renewed my sub, I still had 3 mules that I made when, in protest to some horrible PvP imbalance (I honestly don't remember which, but it was before WOLK, so... S3 Druids? S3 SL/SL locks? Shadow step rogues? take your pick, there's a new one every update or it could have been in reaction to comments he made on the forums or in an interview... anyway), hundreds of people were making mules on Tichondrius with TomChilton in the name, and throwing themselves off the airship thingy.

So there were hundreds of corpses with names like, Futomchilton, tomchiltonmustdie, firetomchiltonnao, wehatetomchilton, tomchiltonruinswow, tomchiltonisdevil, etc etc

Good times.

I don't think it's going to matter when blizzard does decide to make Warcraft free to play, because by the time they do it will be irrelevant. Too many other quality free to play MMOs will be in the market. As of now there's only a few of popular MMOs that have altered their payment models to subscription free.

Soon there's going to be more that enough to force Blizzard's hand. I guarantee they will change their payment model, it's only a matter of how soon can Guild Wars 2 arrive?

Tempes Magus, I commented on the article in my very first post, and have repeatedly reminded you of that so the idea that you were trying to get me to possibly comment on it is pure nonsense. Also, nowhere did I say "many illiterates". There is more than one semi-literate post in this topic although I did not imply that all the comments were so.

If you really are only concerned with my commenting on the article then re-read my original post at the foot of the second page and respond to my view about the article in that. You might at the same time apologise for constantly misinterpreting and misquoting me while claiming that your purpose in doing so was to get me to comment on the original article when I had in fact already done so at the outset. Then we'll move on!

So Tempes, you don't have a comment to make on my views on the article then? Funny, I thought that was all you were trying to elicit from me and when I point out that I gave my views in my original post you don't want to deal with that after all.

No surprise there. Nor in the fact that you're criticising me for attacking others when all you've done in our exchanges is attack me without commenting on my original opinion on the article.

I think everyone here has got your point. You dont like subscriptions. I am all for free speech and anyone can post and comment what they want especially on the internet, but you dont have to reply and repeat yourself on virtually every comment or article to make your point, once or twice is enough. No one is twisting your arm to pay to play games, however the regularity of your arguments and critisisms against those that advocate or support subscriptions whilst articulate is becoming intrusive.

I respect your opinion and your right to leave a comment, so please do the same to others.

Pretty obvious they wouldn't when people are already happy to fork out millions of dollars in subs AND pay for in-game items at the same time.

The day an MMO goes f2p is the day I never play it again. F2P is completely backwards. People WANT to have to buy their way through the game instead of play the game? Really? Epic Fail.

As someone who has played Guild Wars, City of Heroes, Aion, Global Agenda, STO, and LoTRO recently as well as WoW, I see the comment made about competition as this: 'Make a game that has the playability, stability, and community that WoW has. Until that happens, why should we change a winning formula?'. Many of these games have some of these aspects, but none of them have all of them. Until they do, Blizzard will remain unchallenged.

As for the comment that Blizzard is sitting on their hands, I would have to disagree. Many changes are coming when cataclysm drops which will address balance and game mechanics. Will the 9 million subscribers find a way to exploit these changes? Of course and Blizzard will do as they do now, which is continuously tweak the game on a week to week basis.

WoW already has a cash shop and micro-transactions. So they are already getting the payoff of the F2P model without actually offering the F2P option. So why would they go F2P?

Games go F2P to attract more players. Some of those people will become subscribers, and even if the rest never subscribe for a single month they will almost certainly make cash shop purchases. It's more revenue which is potentially more development resources for the game. And more populated servers are more attractive to prospective new subscribers.

There is no reason not to do it, unless you are WoW and currently have a headlock on 75% of the MMO market.
