While Frogster Interactive is perhaps best known for its main MMO, Runes of Magic, it also carries other games for players to enjoy. One of the titles handled by Frogster Asia is The Chronicles of Spellborn -- a belabored game that has seen its model shift from subscription to free within a few months of launch, had its development team go bankrupt and scatter to the winds, and watched its player-base drop off. Well, according to the most recent press release by Frogster Interactive, it would appear that the Frogster Asia division plans to slough off The Chronicles of Spellborn once and for all.
Meanwhile, in North America, Acclaim still has servers (somewhat) open for The Chronicles of Spellborn, but the game feels as if it has been left chained in a dusty corner with a crust of stale bread and a tin of rusty water by its neglectful parents. There are enormous issues on the official site, such as a broken downloader setup, corrupted patches, and most recently, a bug requiring players to change their passwords each and every time they try to log in to the game. No fixes or responses are forthcoming, and we were unable to get any official comment from Acclaim regarding its intentions for the North American version as of the time we published this.
The full text of the section of Frogster's press release dealing with TCoS can be found behind the break. As to Acclaim's intent, we'll update this post if we get a response.

Update on Frogster Asia
The 64% Frogster subsidiary Frogster Asia Co. Ltd. could yet again not reach an agreement on further cooperation with the Dutch licensor Spellborn NV regarding the intended enhancements and publishing of the free to play version of the MMO Game 'The Chronicles of Spellborn' in Asia and is thus forced to close down the development studio and to dismiss all staff who dealt with the free to play version by order of Spellborn NV. Herefrom arises an extraordinary negative P&L effect for the subsidiary which will have a negative impact to the group result in a small to medium six digit Euro amount. The Frogster Interactive management had informed the public several times before about the uncertain outcome of the ongoing talks. On the other side, Frogster Interactive will reclaim the paid prepayments for the product of a seven-digit Euro amount while it is unknown whether the developer could make such a payment. The company has already fully written off all prepayments on Frogster's balance sheet regarding the game so that no noteworthy negative impacts from the balance sheet are impending.
Frogster Interactive will finance the further, not yet break-even operation of 'Runes of Magic' in Korea and, as already announced, the market launch of the MMO Game 'Ghost Fighter' which was recently newly licensed by Frogster Asia from the Chinese market leader Shanda and is scheduled for launch in autumn. This funding will be done per a shareholder loan to Frogster Asia in a medium six-digit Euro amount. At the same time, the holding company will receive a call option on for the acquisition of further stakes in Frogster Asia at face value.

And another one bites the dust.

Too bad, TCoS was actually pretty good fun. I loved the combat system.

I kept trying to get back into this after changing computers and re-installing, but I could never get the game to launch properly; I just got a more baffling set of error messages each time. I did have fun when I was able to get into the game, back when it still had a subscription. This is terribly disappointing news for fans of different game mechanics and lore that was a little off the beaten fantasy MMO path.

I liked the combat system and the art style, it was different... It's such a shame, it could have been something great if weren't for the terrible management. Makes you think, were all the people involved idiots or is there some sort of conspiracy about?

Exactly bad management weakened it from the start and the game and its community were never able to recover from it. The gameplay itself was great but the doubt about how the servers were going to be organised (days before release) and the delay on release and more importantly the spread launch in only a select number of countries were deadly for the game. So sad... oh so sad. :(

This and Guild Wars are my favourite MMO's. I've been looking all over the place for any sparkle of hope on this one before stubbling upon this. This press release by Frogster is just rather sad and I'm afraid that this is the end for TCoS...

So after reading this, it finally confirms what I personally thought of this game since early beta, Spellborn NV is the architect of it's own demise. Hard to sympathize there.

This game has incredible combat and some great writing, they just needed to double the experience rate from 1-12 so that people could see it for themselves within an acceptable time frame.
It's so sad that Activision botched the launch with their incomprehensible "Acclaim Coins" pricing model and a complete lack of marketing or fanfaire. The non-English Euro launch was just as lacklustre.
I've just tried to get in game to capture some videos of my favourite classes and fallen fowl of the launcher problems. I really hope someone manages to pick this up and give it the relaunch it deserves.

Its really not a bad game. If it ever had the support it needed at launch i think it could have done better. Instead it was cast off almost immediately.

Even though I've never played it, I am sorry to see it go. Games closing down is a sad thing indeed. No matter how you felt about this game, you should still feel for the people who are losing their home.

This game was doomed the minute Acclaim came aboard.
The forums blew up, release was a joke with zero communication during that fiasco, Acclaim Coins with no Credit Card sub options....and many many Acclaim induced disasters.
Very sad. It wasn't a bad game and deserved better than Acclaim.

Actually, it went wrong about a year before launch, when about half the development staff was either fired or replaced - I don't know the specifics, but someone pulled a "vanguard" on the game, putting an almost completely new staff on developing it through to launch.
Before that change it looked good on it's way, but after that it felt more like people trying to pick up the pieces.

This game is dead, Is just that nobody is there to turn the server off.

TCoS has one of the best atmospheres around, IMO. The whole idea of people living on the debris after a magical cataclysm is certainly unique to the MMO scene that usually relies on general high fantasy for it's background. While I think that it's combat system -- while enjoyable -- is mainly a mechanic contrived to set it apart from what is essentially a, well, I'll not say it here, I'm never happy to see an MMO go down for the count.

I wonder how that came about since no one was touching the servers, development, etc.

At least attempts were made to save it (going F2P, etc.). Tabula Rasa, a substantially better game than CoS, in my opinion, never even got that much.
I'd love to see Turbine acquire the right to TR and make F2P/viable somehow.
CoS, on the other hand, just wasn't that great a game. : /

I tried to get the game a few months ago but the download never worked. After 2 emails and no response from Acclaim i just gave up. Really wanted to try it out, haven't really heard anyone say they didn't like the game. Still looking for a secondary MMO when i'm not playing FFXI.

Its funny because I've had this on my hard drive for ages, and just yesterday deleted it. Seems they're following my lead.
