Fans of Sony Online Entertainment's highly-anticipated DC Universe Online title can chew on an additional piece of news to go along with all the goodies revealed at E3 last week. Several websites have run unconfirmed reports on the game's pricing model, so we went straight to the source to get the skinny.
"The revenue model will be subscription based, with a monthly fee of $14.99 per month. The PC version will carry a suggested retail price of $49.99 and the PS3 version will carry a suggested retail price of $59.99," said an SOE public relations spokesperson.
Rumor has it that the superhero title will also feature some sort of microtransaction model to go along with the traditional subscription fee, but when asked about it directly, SOE responded "we have not confirmed microtransactions at this point." Stay tuned to Massively for more details as they become available.

Any explanation as to why the PS3 version is $10 more? Seems a bit silly to charge more for something you simply download directly to the PS3.

It's not limited to PS3, FYI. The PC versions(both normal and Collectors' Edition) of Mass Effect 2 are $10 cheaper than the 360 equivalents. Like alamos said, it's a console tax. :P

Back when the rumour was that it was going to be microtransaction based with no subscription, I was very interested in the game. Now that it's going subscription, no longer interested in the game. Tired of all these companies wanting to do both subscription and microtransaction.

Well they can certainly give it a go, but superhero button-masher doesn't scream subscription model to me.
Short of artificially bloating levelling, exactly what is they're to see that can't be done in the first month?

it is interesting that it is all US people who love this P2P model and hate F2P i think its because you have a saying there in US there is no such thing as a free meal! and this attitude makes you are inherently skeptikal and mistrusting

It's the direct result of American-style laissez-faire capitalism. A "culture" that is skeptical because all it ever sees is the lying/cheating/stealing endemic to it's "culture", the result of massive rampant out-of-control corporate greed (in fairness, not confined to America, see BP's oil disaster, also caused by massive rampant out-of-control corporate greed).

Subscription model = Sure I guess
F2P = HELL YEAH
Subscription + minor cash shop options (some costume sets, maybe extra character slots and other purely cosmetic options) = Ehhhh.... I'll maybe buy it 5-6 months down the road
Subscription + full cash shop = When does Tera and GW2 come out again?

Everyone clammering for Free to Play... i'm sorry that things cost money to make and maintain? To Update? I'd rather pay 15 dollars a month and contribute a bit extra to see more devs on the team than have a bunch of random halfwits running around the games screaming to the high heavens about how they feel mistreated by the game company when they haven't contributed a single cent to the product that they're playing.
But such is life, I suppose. :)
For the record, in EQ2, as someone else posted, the items are mostly fluff. I'd guess that this system will be similar to the C-Store in Champions where they add an extra costume set there every so often in addition to the costumes they release in the patches. It's a model that works, and it supports a larger dev team. If you don't like microtransactions, then just pay the monthly fee and you'll be able to see the entire game regardless.

Awww, I was looking forward to this title. With the confirmation of a monthly fee, and it being $14.99 a month I'm gonna have to pass. I don't see this being more than a side MMO for me. I was expecting a free to play model with an item mall type setup to buy some customization options and power set type of things.
Or at the very most an option of paying a monthly fee of like $10 dollars for complete access or playing for free and having to buy some of the power sets or customization options off of the item mall.
With a flat $14.99 or the $14.99 plus an item mall I will have to pass because the value just isn't there for me.
It was going to be between this and APB being my side MMO and APB just won :(
But I do wish the game and the devs well. At least it means one less game I need to worry about following.

Umm... I just went to APB's site and it's a subscription based game with an item shop, just like DCUO.

Like I said above, I don't know any new subscription based game that doesn't have an item mall for fluff items. Buy whatever game you want, but make it for the right reasons at least.

It's $10 a month for 30 days of unlimited play, or $7 for 20 hours that doesn't expire. The social district is also completely free (After buying the game) meaning those 20 hours are ONLY used while in the action district.
The item mall you are talking about is for player made items or other items players find if they CHOOSE to sale them for RTW points. In the market place you have the option of selling things you have for APB dollars which is in-game currency or RTW points which you can use to buy game time. Meaning the game can be completely free if you are creative enough or know how to work the market.
So learn your facts before commenting lol.
And in any case, I see the value in APB for what I will be paying. As I said I simply do not see that in DCUO and thats what matters to me, not your opinion lol.

It's not a value though Gray unless you plan to play less than 20 hours a month. F2P really isn't that cheap otherwise, and the only ones who really benefit it over the sub are people who wont play much: the rest of us are paying much more to support them, often double a sub fee. APB caps it, but a lot of other games don't.

Like I said, a subscription plus cash shop. Who makes the items is irrelevant.
Again, like I said, buy what you want, but don't act like APB is so much cheaper.
Lol indeed.

I just lost interest. Honestly there are too many other really good games that are subscription-free. I won't miss anything with this game.

The 15 a month model is dead. DDO has shown that. People have more money than time and would rather have a lifetime sub or have free to play with buying stuff you want in the game. Most of that stuff is not game breaking anway 90% is cosmetic items. It is those that are broke that complain about microtransactions or lifetime subs becase mommy and daddy will pay the 15 a month but not the lifetime sub ir the microtransactions.

The DDO business model rules. You can get a subscription, with all the non-F2P content included, or go F2P. You dont have any need to use the shop if you get a subscription. I don't see why anyone would have a problem with that kind of model.

They danced around the issue of payment model for so long that I kind of lost interest in this for a while, even though all the videos looked so awesome.
But as a long-time CoH player and someone who was incredibly disappointed with CO (for oh so many reasons) I'm really pleased to read this news.
DCUO has my full attention now.
