What struck me the most about this trailer was one thing, the aiming reticule seen when given a look into a space marine player character. This means very possibly that the combat will be less knee-kicking and more twitch. Sign me up.

If it isn't going to have cover like GoW or Mass Effect it's automatic fail and definitely not "next generation". From the looks of it, it's just another shooter slugfest.

WTF !?!? You can think what you want, but what you just said, has no logic at all.... How can you say that if it has cover-system, "it's just another shooter slugfest"... How many MMO shooters do you know ? How many uses covering-system ? And your examples are bad, cause' there was a MMO like Mass Effect or GoW, it would've F****NG ROCKED !!! :D Just have no idea what you're talking about.......

I get a kick out of the fact that people are already whining about what the game has and doesnt have just from A FREAKING TRAILER lol!
Its an overlay! lose!
its not an overlay but it looks like wow! lose!

Give a dork a microphone, watch him crap into it.

When this comes out I will buy it even if it sucks just to support the franchise. And its one step closer to a Shadowrun mmo!

OMG.

First:

Space Marines >>>>>All else.

Second:

If this is a WAR fiasco again, Emperor help the developers.

Finally:

That interface needs serious polishing.

Overall, I'm skeptical, but optimist.

Looks surprisingly good for a first look at the game, I was expecting something less awesome actually. I'll reserve my judgement for when I know more about the games systems though, this didn't really tell me anything apart from that the engine looks pretty good and I'm a gameplay nut.

Looks like there's a TechPriest fighting with the demon and the Space Marine at the 37s mark. The vehicles look pretty awesome, bikes, deffkopta's, Titans, would have liked to see some of the tanks SM/IG tanks.

Looks very good all around, graphics and style are def better than WAR. I just hope it's not hyped to oblivion and dropped on its head like WAR was.

Need more info though, such a teaser of a trailer.

Hee hee hee, I was just thinking that about the #1 way to get the biggest "WTF????" the world has ever seen would be to make a Warhammer 40K MMO and NOT have Space Marines in it at all.
I'm just laughing my butt off picturing their booth at E3 and a developer being like "Nah, we thought we'd just go with other human factions and like Orcs and stuff." and at about that point he gets hit in the face with a chair and the cops have to be called in to break up the riot.
I crack myself up...

Years ago, when I was working for in the Philadelphia GW store, and the first rumors of a 40k MMO started making the rounds, we got into a discussion about ways to balance the races against each other in an MMO setting. We settled on a PC+NPC squad, with numbers depending on race. For example, a Space Marine player would be alone, whereas a Imperial Guard player would play a squadleader of some kind, plus five guardsmen NPC's (much like the Inquisitor game system in some ways, where, for example, an SM could demolish a warband singlehandedly). Some of the scenes from this trailer (those Marines seem to stick together as if in formation) make it seem like this might just be how they handled it, which is rather nifty, and hasn't been done (except maybe GuildWars?) in any other MMO.

And yet again a well-cut trailer proves its worth in hype value.

I remember all the gushing over WAR's trailers too, but obviously based on the quick cuts of people running and shooting, W40KDM simply has to be better than WAR in every way. :-)

For those wondering about cover:

If you pause the trailer at 41 seconds, you can see the word "cover" appear over the head of the Festering Cultist. Its only there for a split second, so the timing is difficult. Its in a dark blue colour.

You might need to view it in high definition to see it.

This suggests that, even in this early stage, the game has a cover system.

It may be just me, but it looked a whole lot like WoW in space. The modeling, lighting, toon movement, even the ork vehicles seemed like I was watching WoW clips. Plus it seemed like it was a little to bright and shiny for it being the dark future. I guess I just liked the dark and gritty feel of Warhammer Online and was hoping they would keep that going.

I also didn't see much squad based stuff. Squads unit cohesion has always been a hallmark of 40k, running around as an individual "Hero" seems like a rather large diversion from the base game.

Now I haven't seen the game in it's entirety, these are just my first impressions.

I hope I am wrong.

If you watch the video between 24 and 29 seconds, it shows three groups of space marines (two Imperial, one Chaos). Each of these three groups has 3 marines apiece. Later on in the video you can see 4 Imperial Guardsmen fighting together (of which 3 appear to be Kasrkin), as well as some shorter grabs of marine squads in combat. While far from concrete proof, I think theres a strong implication that we might be seeing squad based combat.

Not to mention the third person shooter combat as seen from 40-42 seconds. This truly differenentiates it from more popular MMO titles. Frankly, I think (and hope) that your fears of WoW in space are, for the moment, probably unfounded.

You guys are assuming that this footage (the Imperials, the squads of SMs, etc) is all player based. Most of those shots are just random NPCs in random locations doing pre-generated actions (like standing at a bunker and firing at npcs forever).. that's nothing new in these games.

There was probably very little actual gameplay from the perspective of a player there.

If this game has the ability to play as an Imperial Guard commissar, I'm down. Spouting propaganda, wearing fascist duds while wielding chainswords, the lash and "that special pistol" to punish or execute your fellow players for increased party DPS -- inspiration by putting fear in your own party members is kind of an original thought, and stylish.

But since there was plenty of Adeptus Mechanicus in the video -- I could live being one of those too.

Well NCsoft has never called Guild Wars an MMO and it isn't, there is no persistence. It's like PSO and Diablo and all the rest. Frigging if you call it an MMO then it makes COD an MMO and all the rest because they have leveling up for your character.

Also I don't see how you can say a game world makes no sense for 40k... it's set in a fictional universe, not like their worlds are just arenas where they get instanced to.

I want to explore the 40k universe, I don't want to be stuck in small instances, it isn't fun.
