Fans of Star Wars: The Old Republic have been spoiled at this year's E3, with new game trailers and talks on what we can expect from the game when it launches. Earlier today, we learned the surprising fact that each player would get his own starship and got a first glimpse of what lies ahead for SWTOR's PvP. At their latest presentation, Bioware have now confirmed that space exploration will be a part of the game, using a system very similar to that used by Mass Effect's Normandy. They went on to disclose two of the classes of ship players will be able to get in the game. Players siding with the Republic can get their hands on the Corellian Vanguard light corvette while Imperial players can get the Fury Class Imperial transport.
Skip past the cut to watch this awesome video of SWTOR's ship interiors and find out what's in store for PvP and group gameplay.
Borrowing ideas from other well-established titles, Bioware went on to discuss the game's crafting and PvP systems. Crafting will be "unique but WoW-like", though no specific details have yet been published on it. For PvP, the game will feature some large open PvP areas in addition to instanced warzones. These are intended to act like World of Warcraft's battlegrounds, pitting teams against each other in instanced matches. Transitioning from the game world into an instance is smooth, with absolutely no load time. If it weren't for the glowing green area, you might not even realise you'd entered an instance.
Bioware further announced their plans to push the small group experience in almost every possible way. In a demonstration of group gameplay, they showed a combat scene with a squad of players defending a base. A Trooper acted as the group's main tank, a Jedi Consular healed and the Smuggler ducked from cover to lay down some damage. The Jedi played the role of off-tank, taking care of any additional enemies that strayed into the battle. Keeping the game accessible to the current MMO fanbase, the game will also include raids and a gear progression system. In addition to affecting stats, gear interestingly also affects the abilities your character can use. We got to see some customisation for the Bounty Hunter class, with awesome endgame equipment like rocket launchers and a jetpack.
That's not all we have on SWTOR! Keep an eye on Massively's E3 coverage tonight as we'll be publishing our exclusive interview with Rich Vogel, Vice President and Co-Studio owner of BioWare. Stay with us during E3 as we bring you up-to-date information on SWTOR as we get it.

As we glean more and more information about the Ship feature it only makes me more and more excited about TOR and what else may be on the Horizon. I don't think anyone is really all that surprised though as A) Ships were almost outright confirmed from the onset of TOR's unveiling, and B) Given the importance the Ebon Hawk played in the Original KOTOR there was no way they were going to be able to emulate that experience without giving the player thier own version of that Iconic Ship but with a faction/class spin.
I'm really looking forward to having a place in TOR where I can not only get away for a little bit, but also interact with my Companion characters and maybe even engage is some Holo-net chat with Guildies or friends in game. Also, the idea of being able to go aboard the vessel of a Guildie or Friend and see how he/she has thier ship personalized is pretty cool as well.
As to the Space Exploration and Combat? Well, frankly, I think if you're coming to TOR looking for that, you're in the wrong place. No where in KOTOR did we get Space exploration or tons of Space Combat, minus the occasional Mini-game-esq segments. If you want to duke it out between ships there are quite a few titles out there that will accomodate you, but TOR does not seem like one of those, though that could change as we get closer to release or maybe even sometime afterward as an expansion.
If Space Combat never comes into the game I will not consider it a Loss for TOR as there is already So Much being offered in game whether via action or the RPG experience. Frankly, if not having Space Combat or Exploration ruins all of TOR for someone, I can't help but feel bad for that person given everything they will miss for the sake of a particular game mechanic which has never been all that exciting.

Guild CAPITAL ships, that players can launch their fighter-class ships from.... guild level tactical warfare would be... beyond good.

REALLY disappointed with several things(yes this is a rant about why Bioware can't even come close to the few things SWG got right 7 YEARS ago). After SWG, ANY SW game should be at least as robust, and include things that should be assumed by now... again, SWG did it SEVEN years ago, so no excuses not to at least match it.
- The characters and animations still look hokey and unrealistic. We don't necessarily need photo-realism if you're going the stylized route, but at least make the running look natural!
- it would be nice if the faces were actually capable of even the slightest expressions. From what I've seen the faces are frozen except for the lips....really disappointing. Just because you spend millions on voices doesn't mean you can leave the faces flat and expressionless.
- flat lighting, no shadows, no texture to anything
- If they neglect twitch-based space combat, it will be a real shame. Star Wars without a joystick and a fighter to fly in and dogfight is stunted and incomplete, especially when it was done right years ago.
- Ship customization is key too...reactors, shields, weapons, etc.(player crafted)
- player-based crafting economy(players harvest resources, and produce the things your character needs like clothing, armour, weapons, food, ships, meds, beasts, etc.
- player cities, housing
Looks like my rant will be useless though, it seems clear this game is not going to be as deep and robust as SWG. What we REALLY need is a game that does everything SWG did right, but updated and repackaged.

If there will be space battles which is rather common staple in the Star Wars universe, I would make a bet that it will be included.
However, I will go out on a limb here and say that the space combat will probably be more Mass Effect Normandy with Allods Online Astral Ships peppered in.
This is what I mean:
- No external viewing or flight animation of the ship for non-pilots.
- Other crew members (possibly guild members/other players) will command stations such as the laser batteries and turrets like in the Millennium Falcon. Similar is done on Astral Ships.
- For everyone else, it will be like being in the Normandy in Mass Effect and everyone gets to feel its motion and shaking and jitter from the laser blasters.
That's my best guess.
Also, it's funny how this MMO is coming out with ship interiors at LAUNCH unlike Star Trek Online.
As for the dated look and animations, I'm hoping it will improve by release. Why? It looks like I'm playing a prettied-up Knights of the Old Republic. I would rather like that Bioware use the Mass Effect graphics engine instead. Now, that would be much better and suitable for SWTOR.
