Any word on the context of having a spaceship? Will there be space combat? PvP space combat? Or is this instanced housing?

They don't say you'll be flying around this ship. It might just be an interior you zone to and that's it.

Notice they leave out mention of Space Combat or Exploring. I'm suspecting that the Player Ships will just be Player Housing like it basically was in the KotOR games, a place to store items, craft, and talk to your companions. They even so far as describing it as a house at the presentation. I would expect (for now at least) that space travel will just be either a cut scene of you ship leaving/arriving at a planet, with at best maybe a mini-game turret battle if your ship is "attacked". That's not to say story missions won't take place in the game, like your ship being attacked and boarded in the storyline.

I'm fine with that if that's all it ends up being for now, it's a decent start and hopefully the game will get a full blown space expansion somewhere down the line.

If it is instanced housing only, then I don't understand why they wouldn't come out and say that, before the speculation gets blown out of proportion, which I'm sure it is over at the SWTOR forums. I feel they got something more planned then just having an instanced ship to visit like player housing in other games. I don't expect combat, but I could see some kind of exploration or travel system, which would be incredible.

Yeh but I bet they'll be instanced, so they'll be pointless. What I loved about SWG was housing and that were seamless so everyone could see your house and what's in it. Also spaceships you could look our seamlessly into space from inside them and have parties and stuff. I bet none of that will be in SWTOR, which makes it a shame that SOE and LA ruined SWG. Also what makes me worry about SWTOR is LA, what happens when a new movie comes out? Movie tie in expansion noone cares about like SWG? What happens when they get another developer to make content and an expansion?

Over lunch, I told my coworker I thought we'd get player housing or spaceships announced... I didn't think it would be both in one. ;)

Let's see how it plays out first before we jump to that conclusion. But I agree, I know how you feel. :)

I agree. Lots of talk/trailers and very little game play so far. Hype/marketing doesn't make a good game.

I hope that there is a going to be a FFA component to the PvP because a 2 faction system is going to result in a lot of problems that have yet to be solved over the past 10 years. We've seen FFA work in AoC to a certain extent. We're seeing Blizzard make the shift away from a strict 2 faction PvP design. We're seeing CoH allow players to shift sides.

I have high expectations and I need more actual details about the game. I thought the brief mention of PvP and player housing/ships wasn't even worth mentioning. Apparently the crowd didn't find much interest in the announcement without details either. Personally, this is the type of "information" that makes you worry about the final game.

I only said it was the WoW killer because that was the impression I was getting on how professional and well done they are presenting it in venues such as the one here. They're serious about making a great game and they seem to have what it takes on all fronts.

That's what the weak minded always say. lol

A week after the game comes out everyone will be playing WoW again. lol

Just like every time a new MMO comes out.

Before launch "(Insert MMO here) is going to be the WoW killer!"
After "This game sucks, I'm going back to WoW!"

(lol) Every time.

I seriously doubt that this will "kill" WoW. At best, I think it will steal a non-trivial minority of WoW players away (let's be generous and say 25%) for a significant amount of time or permanently, and that is only if the game is as awesome as Bioware says it will be.

Certainly, the strong Star Wars IP will help bring in new players initially, however the ultimate key will be how TOR's end game plays out, which is unfortunately not something we will likely get a firm grasp on until the game is in later beta phases or possibly even until after release. Time will tell if Bioware's endgame will have more to offer than WoW's raiding model.
