I hadn't heard of this MMO before. I'll have to check it out.

I just watched the official "gameplay video" and it looks like a lame youtube video made by an amateur. Not to mention the models and mechanics look awful. I'm sorry but this looks like a total pass to me. It seems like it has zero creativity involved in the game design.

The dev team behind this game is laughable. This game is missing so many features and stability that it is essentially an early alpha release in it's current form. It would take them a solid year of bug fixing and performance optimization before this would be ready for beta! I weep for this game's future.. I liked the concept and ideas behind it.

Note that for them, Open Beta is actually more of an alpha- that is, most of the features aren't in, and they're not expecting to hit launch for at least several months if not years. They call it Open Beta only because they are allowing all players to test for Alpha.

There is something to what you say. But it is also true that this really isn't up to beta. It really is more of a alpha level (I've been in alpha/betas goin waaaay back to alpha Meridian59, I do know the difference). It is missing so many features, and the level that existing features are running at... I want this game to be good, I love the level of sandbox that they're aiming at. I deeply want a good sandbox to play in! But they have a good way to go. Hope they can make it there!

Beta, Alfa or RC01.120212613161AaF...

the game is still quite a distance away from release. many missing features, bugs and issues are very prevailant, making it truly a beta-beta as most big companies "Closed early" beta's are. the developers are fixing issues, balancing and introducing features on a multi-weekly basis and have a clear view of what they plan and how they want to bring that to fruitation.

some of the things the game features in "Semi" working form.

- PvE safezones around "newbie" towns"
- PvP FFA zones with free-form citybuilding. (ala SWG/UO)
- Shipbuilding and persistent deployment (ale UO)
- Skill-based system based on a hardcap
- Very involved and original crafting system.
- Very interesting twist on the normal MMO combat mechanic
- Local banking, resources and transportation

this is but a small bullit point list of all things.

Most of this list is untrue, here is a corrected list.

Semi-working features:

- PvE safezones around "newbie" towns"
(This is true, the newbie island is mostly complete, bar many small bugs.)

- Skill-based system based on a hardcap
(Also true, however some skills are impossible to reach high skills due to severe skill-gain imbalances.)

- Very involved and original crafting system
(Indeed it's quite good, not mortal online depth by any means, but still very good bar some major bugs.)

- Local banking, resources and transportation
(All true)

Not a chance in hell of being even remotely close to complete list:

- PvP FFA zones with free-form citybuilding. (ala SWG/UO)
(While pvp is in, it's extraordinarily imbalanced to the point of being a joke. It does however work at least. As for citybuilding... this is completely and totally broken/not implemented. You can build the structures, but they do absolutely nothing, and many don't even have collision, like houses.)

- Shipbuilding and persistent deployment (ale UO)
(Ships are completely broken at the moment, and have been ninja removed by making them require higher skills to build than any player could ever reach.)

- Very interesting twist on the normal MMO combat mechanic
(The combat is very generic "at the momment" Nothing creative thus far.)

People do need to get their head of out their ass and listen to the comments this is not real open beta. And Dawntide devs really need to learn to name stuff better.

On a side note the dawntide devs have been building this game and with active demo always working. They seem to be willing to work on it for a year at least in this manner.

This is a good thing, it can be tested as it goes. As opposed to the MO dev team who seemed to make their shit in pieces and are amazed it turned out like crap when they put it together.

I've been playing Dawntide on and off since the Closed Beta started. I'd say the CB was definitely an Alpha and the stage it's at now is more like I would expect to see in the first phase of a Closed Beta, so they have succumbed to a bit of status creep in the marketing deparment.

That said, they have made huge progress and continue to do so. If they carry on like this, they should have a really solid game in a year or two. The character and mob animations are non-existent, which makes the game look clunkier than it actually feels to play. The world design is excellent and the graphics in game are very detailed and attractive.

It looks as though it's going to be a game built around the concept of "slow and steady". Everything takes ages . If they stick with this approach, then no matter how polished it ends up being it will be an ultra-niche title, but it could be a successful one.

I downloaded and installed the game last week, but I had to leave after mere minutes, because I was getting 5-6 FPS in the starting zone. Did this get fixed?

I just want to play as a Santyrian already...

Also, am I the only one that gets stuck on the load screen after character selection with the new release?

This is as rough as an alpha gets, at least i would hope so. In two or three years they may have something going, when they bring their graphics to 2010 standards they will do even better.

I spent a few days in the beta since it opened and I think this game has a lot of potential alongside Darkfall (still in development, imo), Mortal Online (a paid beta with huge potential for people who want an UO type of game in 3D), and maybe others like Xsyon and Earthrise, which I know less about.

I just didn't have time to stay in the DT open beta and play both Darkfall and MO. MO is my main game for this month, but I feel like it is a beta. I like the developers' vision, so I am supporting the game. I will see what they do with it this month. I'm doing this because all of these developers are trying something different than the stale "AAA" formula and cash shop games out now.

I think DT's team have some great ideas and I hope they come out with a great game. It is worth reading about to decide if you want to take part in this open beta. I think it will be worth it to get into this community if you have the time.
