I'll never understand the MMO player mentality that says you should "give it/them a chance" in the sense of launching something that's not "complete". As long as people pay for incomplete games the "devs" will keep pumping them out. No one should be paying for alpha/betas it's ridiculous. -Note this is a general comment not particular to this game. I would love a true skill based simulation/sandbox.

I just wish "Open sandbox world" didn't always seem to have to go hand in hand with "Open world PvP".

I love that type of game, but just don't have the time or patience to devote to an unrestricted PvP environment anymore.

Guess who just bought Mortal Online to review it, because no one else on the staff did.

-_-;

I guess we'll see what happens. :D

Sera - I bought the digital download to get access to beta a while ago. I haven't played since it launched (too into Conan at this point) but I did log into my account on the website. There was a story somewhere about Star Vault automatically turning on subscriptions and I can verify that mine was. Nothing against MO or SV - I wish them the best and will play at some point, but it may be worth verifying and noting if the subs were automatically turned on for others - it's been a looong time since I gave them my CC info and others may overlook that and get a surprise!

Yeah, I noticed that as well when I logged into my account today. Subscription is automatically on. =/

I'm leaving it on until I'm done, as I'm paranoid that it might can my free month. Or, maybe I'll love it so much I'll want to keep playing it. Who knows? :3

Cool - I'll be looking forward to reading about your impression of the game!

Quick question - do you enjoy PvP? I'm not one to hunt down and destroy others' playtime, but after Darkfall I did get addicted to the tension of open world PvP - you can't look away, even while harvesting resources... Personally I found it exciting - you have to have a clan/guild/group to ride with to survive and also be very smart about what you keep in your bag vs in the bank.

Why would you buy it? Wouldn't Star Vault just give you a copy for review purposes?

I'm off and on regarding PvP. When PvP is thrilling and exciting and I feel the heat of the chase, then yeah, I usually enjoy some PvP. When PvP means, "6 dudes are going to outnumber you nao, prepare for death." Then I'm less keen on the whole idea because I don't find zerging fun. (Even though I have done it. It wasn't that much fun on the other side either.)

I guess... I dunno. I'm not pro or anti-PvP. I usually stay away from it, but I've had some great stories from PvP. I go either way. :)

Here's a quick tip then, serra(and other new players in general)! If you're looking for a relatively safe starting area, try to start in Meduli. It's a major trade hub, and hunting/gathering is pretty convenient. Gaul Kor and Kranesh are the home of chaos and bloodshed in the streets. Fabernum... while a nice place to start is probably laggier because everyone starts there(It also draws all the murderers nearby). Morin Khur and Toxai are probably not best suited to new players just because of how massive they are. Starting area choice is determined by race.

And one last thing..Learn the land! Because night in MO is DARK.

Auto-subscribe on activation is pretty standard for MMOs...not sure why everyone has been commenting about that. Either way, one of the best launches in history for sure--pleasant surprise.

I guess I commented because of all of the problems and misfires they had - wasn't sure it was even going to launch for a while and I'd stopped waiting.

With that said, I did just find an email in my SPAM folder from them - it was sent today:

Auto-subscription

You are receiving this email because of your Mortal Online pre-order purchase. The initial free month you received with your game purchase begins today, and regular billing will begin one month from today.
If you do not wish to auto-subscribe, please log into your account [Link] and cancel the option.

We also want to formally inform you about the new TOS, the Naming Policy, the EULA and the Reimbursement Policy.

All of which can be found on mortalonline.com.

I'm looking forward to hearing some reviews on this. The concept of Mortal Online is pretty much spot-on, but I felt like StarVault was really hurt when the game was unplayably buggy in beta. If they've really fixed that up in time for launch, they might stand a chance at pulling in some subscriptions and keeping them.

Here's hoping to see you playing this soon, Sera!

I'm not too happy about them starting the free month without any warning. Isn't it pretty standard to start billing once we log into the client for the first time? I don't even have the client much less the time to play at the moment.

I'm also not thrilled with the automatic billing, but at least they let us know in the email.

9:30pm mountain time, and www.mortalonline.com and the forums are both entirely down/broken. The server hasn't been able to stay online for more than 5 minutes at a time, all evening.

Woo hoo! Go Go failed launch day! Oh, and it's >=200ms latency to the MO server (yes, the ONE server) anywhere west of the Great Lakes. Huzzah!

Logged in yesterday, saw lotsa people, some still with a plain white ragdoll, like the model hasn't loaded yet. Some just invisible , so basicly a floating sword.

Some were running around with torches cause apparently it was dark, but I could see everything, their torches were more annoying then the darkness.

Server crashed frequently, killed some pigs, seemed to be ok, except for some non-responsive ones. It's a bit unclear which skills are important and which aren't , cause there isn't any description, it just says "coming soon TM" in desciption area for a skill. Vendoring is done in a bit of a strange way, but once you know how it works , I guess it's ok.

Movement is extremely fragile on certain terrain, you seem to be better off staying away from water/ pebbles / rocky terrain.

When you get surrounded by mobs and killed , the mobs stay for ages around you as a ghost and they block you in.

Ridiculous.

I was in Beta Group A but simply gave up after the whole "Sausage Lake" fiasco and crippling server problems. Literally spent hours and hours on the forums and in IRC last summer and all it amounted to was five minutes play time in the beta.

I decided to just cut my losses and be on my way. I honestly thought the game would never see the light of day. I would check the website periodically every few weeks and nothing there led me to believe the opposite.

I got the disc in the mail a while back and was surprised to say the least. Logged onto the website and saw that the game wasn't launching for another few months. Brilliant.

So I finally see yesterday that the game launched. I'm trying to run the client housed on the physical disc but am constantly getting errors. I have about six different beta clients installed on my PC. Who knows if one of them will work? I'm trying to download the latest client off the website, but the .exe is literally being pulled at 7.1 kb/s. Nobody on the forums is being particularly helpful.

If this game actually survives the six month mark, it will be a miracle.

Their website mysql instance has been down more than it's been up, this morning. Unfortunately, this means the entire site and the forums are both down.

Similarly, the client download has been running for more than 24 hours for me, and apparently I'm not even 10% done. This is with a 1Mbit up/10Mbit down Internet connection that I can regularly saturate from a fast site. (current download rate is around 32-40 kbit/sec / 4-5 KByte/sec)

Also, during the brief periods where the forums have been up, I've been reading about PvP exploits, whereby other players can flag you grey by them running into your mount while you're standing still, then they call the guards, the guards kill you, and the exploiter takes all your money and items.

Sounds like they've built a first person UO after all. Good times!

Sera,

In addition to auto-starting your sub, they also have chosen to ninja-subscribe all the people who pre-ordered the game 11 months ago. Even though their own TOS at the time said that subs would start after players chose a sub type and payment method. The account system with the subscriptions/cancel options werent added for 6-8 months. So even people who never agreed to a sub have been auto-subbed to the game.. even if they stopped playing 10 months ago. There is a better overview here and I hope you research this issue for any review:
