I honestly didn't know this game was still around until I received an email today from SOE telling me about server merges. I haven't even played since closed beta.

Really all you had to do was look at the forums before to see why this game has died over the years. The game's "fans" were basically all wow haters. There wasn't really a large group among them that wanted the game. They just wanted an anti-wow. Once they got it they realized why so many people played wow in the first place.

Im not sure why Alikar is getting rated down but what he is saying is true. "Wow-haters" is a bad term to use but it is because of the self proclaimed "hardcore MMORPG players" That vanguard is a massive failure. The whole idea behind vanguard was to be more like EQ and less like wow to rope in the crowd that preferred that sort of game. What they didnt count on is just how small the group is.

Between bad business choices and an insanely buggy launch they shot themselves in the foot.

Like it or not in this day and age if you dont cater to the casuals you will remain a small niche. People where OK with games like EQ because thats all there was at the time, anti casual grindfest MMOs. Now that we know casual friendly and MMO is not only achievable but popular most people dont want to go back to the dark ages.

It wouldnt take much to boost vanguards population, fix the leveling curve and smooth it out and make it a little more solo friendly. Do that then actually MARKET it, this seems to be a foreign concept to SOE. Small changes could make this game shine.

Unfortunately, it will never happen and they will just keep merging the servers until they pull the plug.

I just gave it another go around and have to say the beginner isle is a nice touch but it still slows to a grinding freaking halt for solo leveling way too fast for any game. Hell, even in EQ these days the leveling is not that bad.

@rawr

I read this and the posts you made further down. I am not going to bother with most of it because you don't make very much sense. But I have to comment on the leveling curve.. seriously Vanguard is as easy if not easier to level solo as every other casual friendly mmo out there. WoW has group quests and dungeons all through the level ranges as does Vanguard, and in both games they are completely optional. You can solo every single class in the game very easily. If you couldn't handle the starting isle I don't know what to say... for being such a long term mmo vet you sure suck at them.

I just started playing Vanguard for the first time a few weeks ago and just recently got to level 32. So far this game has been amazing and while everyone who doesnt play complains about population, the Seradon server is always at medium or high population. My guild After Hours, already has 350+ returning/new players and is less than a month old so there is no lack of people to group with and experience what is by far the greatest game world i have ever experienced.

With regards to the server merge, as a new player this doesnt bother me one bit as it just means i will have more people to play with. Vanguard might be on life support by SOE but there have been at least 1000+ new/re subscriptions since early May so I doubt this game will go belly up anytime soon.

Seradon is the most populated server by far.

After hours is about 1/3 alts and nearly 1/4 of your members have not been online in 2 weeks or more. Which is all impressive for vanguard but its still grossly over exaggerated by you.

You are basing your info on the most popular guild on the most popular server, join another server and try to find groups, its terrible.

The other side of the coin is that vanguards problem is not getting people to join (You dont even have to buy the game anymore) its KEEPING them. Look at your guild roster in a month and i guarantee you are down to less than half of what you have now.

So even if they did manage to get at least 1000 new/re subs like you think based on the trend maybe 200 will be left in 3 months. This is why vanguard is failing.

I can assure you our guild is not a third Alts but that is not the point. Your assumptions have no basis in fact and I can guarantee you that our numbers will continue to grow as more and more people become curious about this awesome game. Believe me, I have played almost everything on the market and I am quick to judge/quit a game that isnt up to par, vanguard is AAA in every way except dev support and will be keeping me and my hundreds of guildmates entertained for a long time to come.

Hey ender go hit up vgplayers it tells you all this so you can quit making things up... I am basing my numbers off FACT you are not.

http://vgplayers.station.sony.com/guildsProfiles.vm?guildId=476741371746

Your guild is exactly 29.5% alts. 31% of your guild has not logged on in a whole week.

How many MMOs you have played is irrelevant, i have played nearly every major north american MMO since 2001 with the big exceptions of darkfall and FFXIII and a few of the failures and i can tell you VG is a very poor game that had more potential than any other MMO release i have seen that was totally screwed by poor leadership.

You can argue and claim your guild will continue to grow but VG has seen many spurts like this and inevitably it always dies back down. Most people that sub to VG quit within the first couple months. The biggest problem with your claims is that nobody is hearing about this awesome game except through news stories like this that show its dying. Mmorpg.com is where most of your guild is coming from and how it was formed, once that community is tapped out your growth is history.

Funny thing i am a member of your guild and probably know more about it than you but that dont really matter now does it.

I was there for launch day and have been back over 7 times now and its always the same thing. I read someone saying the population is picking back up so i join and after about a month the populations goes back to nothing or some site does an article about VG and people join up and sure enough after about a month it dies again. Its never had a problem getting subs its keeping them. For a game that receives absolutely no advertising it really does a great job at getting people to try it. VG simply cant keep players, anyone that has played for any amount of time can see that plain as day.

Being as how you have barely even played the game you should probably STFU about the trends you have no clue about. Go to any VG related forum ad they will tell you exactly the same thing.

Using VGplayers for any sort if information gathering is a joke since it's always been inaccurate and days, if not weeks, behind the times.

Im a member of the guild... Its not like it was difficult to find the info and VGplayers is a lot more accurate than you think Alan.

Hardly a troll. Just annoyed that the guy still in the honeymoon period is defending a game as if he has a clue. Come back in a few months then share your thoughts ender.

Fun fact - 100% of trolls say they are not a troll. It's called troll denial.

Vanguard had a pretty huge world and plenty of starting areas. It always boggled my mind why they had so many servers ..

They estimated they'd have about 6 million subscribers. They were on drugs. Literally, as it turns out.

Great game... such a tragedy it was not ready for launch and SOE never has truly supported the game beyond keeping it on life support. They could have relaunched the game with new marketing and maybe switch it to F2P, but instead they have let it flounder for years while Everquest games got all the love.

That's pretty cool, considering. The game can seem very empty, and this will bring the whole community together. Really thinking about taking another look at this game, august may be a good time to do it.

I highly doubt SOE is going to shut down vanguard before they shut down their other flailing games such as Everquest Online Adventures and Planetside...
