When you heard that one of TERA's classes was to be called the "Berserker" and you either thought of either the 80's arcade cabinet classic or an obscure song from the movie Clerks, then we could be fast friends. In any case, TERA's Brian Knox and Scott James Magner sat down with ZAM to talk about this brutal class and why it might appeal to the barbarian in all of us.
TERA's Berserker is a two-handed axe wielder who has his weapon constantly in motion. The relatively short range of the class means that Berserkers have to get up close and personal with any foe they're fighting, but the increased risk of such moves are paid off with some of the highest DPS of the game. Because TERA uses both collision and positioning in its combat system, it's essential for the Berserker to hit with the blade and then duck away before getting slammed in return. Get too close, and you'll end up hitting with the hilt and wondering why the monster is laughing at you.
You can read the full interview at ZAM and check out a series of screenshots detailing one of the Berserker's key moves. The official TERA site also has an outline of the class, along with a video for your eyes only (it will self-destruct after viewing).

I am actually really disappointed in hearing this. No class should get the free pass that if you do what you are supposed to you will be top dps. All dps classes should be competitive with each other. Having one trump the others creates a disparity that can take a long time to recover from if they try to.
I can understand if Berserkers are supposed to top dps by maybe 5% or something like that, but the way the interview goes, it sounds like they are head and shoulders above the others, which isn't fair at all. I really hope they back down on that view a bit.

We Mages have been saying that about Death Knights and Pally's in WoW for quite some time. :(

@utukata if you as a mage are getting out DPSd by a pally or a deathknight you are a terribad horrible Mage. Period. Rogues, mages, hunters, and locks are the top dps classes in that order.....

Um...yeah. I think I was implying a point about class imbalances are mostly inherited in MMO's.
As for my quality as a Mage Squatstopee, peer review and Recount completely disagrees with you. And the only thing here that is terribad is your uninformed opinion on the subject matter. /shrug

Well just the name says they should be able to put out the most dps, but with how they say you gotta hit with the blade part I think it will make pvp quite fun for classes that stay in their face or ranged that can snipe.
"Your attacks take a little bit longer, so you've got to make sure you're positioned right" That quote is typical of a 2h weapon user so avoiding should be easier also. Just because they can do the most damage doesn't mean they will be doing the most consistent damage over time.

The lack of auto-aim in TERA means that positioning is of enormous importance. If you watch the vids, you can see ranged DPS like Sorcs frequently missing their targets due to the "Time-To-Target" delay.
For the Berserker the combination of melee range, slow "Time-To-Target" of attacks and slow(er) run speeds make the class unforgiving even considering the larger amount of burst DPS they put out.

So different classes have different movement speeds. That can come into play in interesting ways.
How does dodging work? Do you roll/jump away from oncoming attacks, or can you only run?
Can only certain classes (probably lighter armored damage dealers) roll away to dodge?

Oh yes, another thing - at the moment, Berserkers don't have much of a HP pool, despite their ability to wear Heavy Armour and Block (70% Mitigation). Compared to Warriors (High HP, High Avoidance) and Lancers (High HP, Heavy Armour + 90% Block), Zerkers need the DPS to kill their targets before they go down.

"Get too close, and you'll end up hitting with the hilt " - ha... Yeah, that'll be a popular feature, I'm sure. (not!)
