As one of the 25%+ of Lindens Laid off this morning I can confirm these rumors are true. There are a number of high profile departures and all were done for cost cutting measures. You should be seeing an announcement soon.

The announcement is there, 30% layoff. I'm sorry for the Linden who lose they jobs.

I hope it will be good for SL, but something in the announcement make me vince : I still have the impression that LL is ignoring that the user basis is already in SL, and that you can only build on it.

Oh, I'm really, really sorry about all the Lindens that have lost their jobs :( It's really a pity... LL as a company seemed to be, for now, a relatively solid employer. Oh well. I'm sure that at least the experience you had at the 'Lab will give you opportunities on any other VW company or VW-related content creator!

@DD on the contrary, the announcement was actually incredibly encouraging in this regard! I'm quoting from the press release:

...a strategic restructuring to increase focus on the company's consumer business...

...will help us make Second Life® even simpler, more enjoyable, relevant and engaging for consumers...

... the company aims to create a browser-based virtual world experience, eliminating the need to download software...

Soooooo this means that the business über alles trend is now over, LL is doing a 180º turn and going back to residents, and become a competitor to Unity3D, OpenWonderland, and all those VWs embedded on a web page.

That's definitely not ignoring the user base!!

Second Life does a 180 degree about face about every 6 weeks! They seem to manage to trample over all kinds of users and small creators/vendors every time the y do that.

Most of us have just gone elsewhere, MAYBE the tiger has new spots, but ...

Has anyone noticed that this development means that M has been lying his ass off for the last year?

I'm seeing comments from former Organic employees saying "I told you so".

Fail CEO is fail.

What I'm going to say isn't meant to be rude. LL is unwilling or unable to support their greatest customers and supporters, and they have only a few months before Blue Mars offers a cloud service (ipad!), gets their user controls out of crappy beta and makes their entry experience seamless (no downloads, etc).

SL cannot help but be a ten year old technology with quite a history of business and education market failures. Even with some important successes, how long can a good thing last? Shouldn't there be new technologies to explore? I'm still on SL almost every day but like many other people I'm developing some place else.

Second Life seems to have managed to engineer a mass exodus of their creative users! The latest round was a declaration that Linden Labs owns ALL content created in Second Life.

Fortunately there are hundreds of OpenSimulator based grids available with more appearing every day! OpenSimulator is loosely based on the Second Life architecture while avoiding many of the limitations.

In contrast to Second Life, OpenSimulator is COMPLETELY Open Source and is a community based project.

More directly aimed at the combination of Google with a 3d world is:

http://metatek.blogspot.com/2010/03/opensim-mars-simulation.html

This uses Google Mars and an OpenSimulator grid as part of an exploration task for a school project! The project is generating a lot of enthusiasm among educators!

As far as I know there is NO complete list of "MetaWorlds" - there are just too many of them and they change frequently.

metaverseink.com has descriptions of many OS worlds

yosims has virtual world reviews

hyperica - hypergrid worlds

Hypergrid lets you move between grids (i.e. your own private grid) and another grid just like teleporting from one island to another.

The actual Hypergrid capability is not working on many worlds due to some nasty bugs, but it WILL be turned on all over when the bugs are fixed. We can all hope that will be soon, best guess is a few months away!

Meanwhile you can still set up an account on these worlds and have fun.

One of my favorite worlds is http://www.3rdrockgrid.com/ who are working very hard to build a real "community" of "citizens" not serfs. They are by far the most welcoming of newcomers and new ideas of any grid! They even have a special sim for "Outer Space visitors!" Big Grin

Non of these individually "compete" with Second Life, but as a group they appear to have more real users than Second Life!

I hope unapologetically that snooty tits Amanda Linden got the chop. I shall dance on her grave if she did.

I've never had any dealings with her, aside from an occasion when she told me to shut up and know my place when I questioned how she treated paying customers.

I watched in shock the many times that she blew off small LL customers (you know, small, only paying them three to nine hundred US bucks a month) in a snooty, high-handed fashion and I thought OMG if you worked for me, you'd be out the door in a second.

A lot of the people at LL didn't get through their skulls that a couple of those small customers together equalled their monthly paycheque. It's like someone on high was telling them, don't worry about these small nuisances, we're after bigger fish. Guess the bigger fish didn't bite; and now the smaller ones, and your paycheque, have swum away lol.

A company that seems determined to forget who's buttering their bread.
