After what feels like an endless period of silence from the developers of Jumpgate Evolution, Executive Producer Lance Robertson has delivered a surprisingly detailed forum post on the game's development.
So what's going on over there? Why all the silence and delays? Apparently, those delays are due to the extensive overhaul to the entire game: "...the team made the crucial decision to completely overhaul JGE's game systems, while also refocusing specifically on the game play experience we wanted to make: space warfare on a massive scale." Much of the game was removed completely and replaced to fit the team had in mind.
And the media blackout? "We couldn't discuss game features, because we were no longer sure what would make it into the game and what wouldn't. We couldn't talk about story, because it was being completely rewritten. There was so much that we wanted to share, but things were just at too early of a stage to discuss without the risk of disappointing you, our community. When we announce something, we ought to be as confident as possible that it will stay in the game – although in game development, there are no guarantees."
The full story is an interesting read, as it explains what has been going on with Jumpgate Evolution, and what will be happening from here on out.

So, what makes this game different from Eve? Serious question, haven't been following it's progress much of at all.

This game is twitch-based combat with either 1st person view from cockpit or 3rd person view behind the ship. Newtonian physics I also believe (confirm anyone?).

You actually get to fly and 'fight' your space craft unlike the point and click dice rolling crap that is Eve.
And unlike that Abortion Freelancer - you will need a Joystick.
I've got halfa right now.....might see if I can get Wing Commander running on my Win7 x64 box and X-52.....
Real Newtonian physics and Real Space combat - whats not to love?

What was wrong with freelancer?
And you will not need a joystick, infact, if you look at a lot of the vids, you'll see that he was a mouse. You can used either. I think at oone point I saw someone use a mouse and the throttle side of a saitek x-45 .

I lke the look of BP more, but I was looking forward to the open world of JGE. It's still not clear how much open world interaction there will be with BP. But they are in beta. Maybe they will have a lot to say at E3.

Common problem with multiplayer space sims:
- Players have to move to a specific jump point in order to travel out of a solar system.
- Players are automatically placed at a specific jump point when traveling into a solar system.
Thusly, many/all/some multiplayer space sims that have this 'feature' suffer from jump point camping/ambushes whereby before your client "recovers" from the jump, you're eating nn gigajoules of particle energy, nn kilonewtons of kinetic energy, or both, and are vaporized before you can react. Remarkably un-fun.
Developers: Fix this problem, and you might get a few more subs. Or don't fix it, and let the games remain PvP gankfests. Your money to burn! :)
Hint: Make jumping in and jumping out purely a matter of a random vector distance from the gravity well. That is, do not place all ingress jumpers at the same spatial location, and do not force all egress jumpers through the same spatial location. Contrived bottlenecks FTL!

Actually BP lets you jump from anywhere, but there is a one minute countdown. I don't know what they are doing about the jump in. I'll have to hit the forum and bring that up.
I'll even credit you.

This i think is a perfect solution to the whole bottle neck issue. There would have to be a cool down time after, and a spin up time before, you jump. Also give players the ability to scan for ships in their nearby area so people cannot just go out, hide, and feel safe.

It sounds to me like the game was delayed to REMOVE content. I didn't read anything in that article to imply that additions had been made. Basically, they delayed the game for a year so they could deliver LESS at launch. This is a game I was really excited about at one point, not it just seems to have FAIL written all over it.

I can't see how you read that. They pulled back to fix what they thought was broken. The game wasn't meeting standards and they took the smart road and stopped the release to fix it, not just rip out parts and release it unfinished AND bad. What kind of sense does that even begin to make?

... because it's what the article said. They wanted to add depth to the basic space combat game, they couldn't make it work, so they started cutting content. I don't see anywhere that he mentions ADDING anything... just the cuts.

Well I just reread the entire forum post and I still walk away with the impression that they had stuff in there that ddn't work. Only a select few ppl know what those things are and I doubt you or anybody reading this is one of them. The only thing we know they took out is the battlespace that from all accounts no one was really a fan of. So before I start worrying about how much less is in the game I'm goign to actually see what is in the game.
If they want to "completely overhaul JGE’s game systems, while also refocusing specifically on the game play experience" that's fine by me. I guess, if I read only words and don't put any thought behind them then yes they are going to "throw away what didn’t work." But I don't know if that make the game less when they are also going to "only keep and improve" what did work.
Guess it's all how you choose to read it. You're welcome to be less excited than you have been for the past year of not knowing anything about the status.
