ArenaNet's latest blog entry is a bit of a departure from what we've grown used to lately. Rather than another big announcement or new information, they've focused a bit on the writing in Guild Wars 2 -- specifically, changes that they'll be making.
Guild Wars 2 Lead Writer Bobby Stein gives some entertaining information on the process behind this new style, pointing out the inconsistencies and occasional silliness in the way things have been done until now. The short version is that they'll be conforming to the Chicago Manual of Style. The long version is contained in the blog post and a great read whether you've got the word nerd gene or not.

It's good to hear that developers are beginning to take writing more seriously now. Early film audiences were content with watching trains roll into stations, and people walking on famous streets. Movies then graduated to story lines involving pie throwing and chases, before finally evolving into a fully developed art form. I see a similar progression developing in games. As the novelty of computer games wears off, people will begin demanding more diverse and fulfilling experiences.

I thought that article was great, even though it didn't really reveal anything "big" about GW2. I thought he was selling himself, and the playerbase, short when he concluded at the end with something about "all two of you who've read this far"...I think it's important to have one set of rules for anything in a game, or it just becomes confusing and frustrating for the players, and the writing should be no exception. I also always felt like the green text and randomly capitalized words in quest dialogues in GW1 had an anti-immersive effect on my experience as a player, so I'm glad they're making it more normalized and getting rid of a lot of the "walls of text" altogether. Way to go, ANet/GW2 team.

while the odd use of caps in the GW text never really bothered me much at all it's good to see them taking an interest in the smallest of issues. I'm a visual person.. words I just glance over and acquire context regardless of grammar and convention so I wouldn't notice but I suspect many did in the past.

Being a gamer and one time programmer has completely ruined my English. So many common words are run together in programming and then I ran into gaming, that I often get really confused when writing. If you spend 50 hours programming in the human-languages tools and another 20+ hours gaming, combined it's very easy for those influences to over take you.
