There already is The West - http://www.the-west.net/

RDR is burning up the charts because 1) it is a Rockstar title and 2) it's GTA Wild West edition. Reviews have also been good and that's helped.

The Wild West is fine as a setting, but there is little to make it exceptional - if anything, it's 'realistic' nature actually interferes with a lot of things players want to see in MMOs. Now, if Shane Hensley finally gets that Deadlands MMO up and running, that'd be a different story...

I think your idea of what "players want to see in MMOs", and mine, are somewhat different.

There is no need for an MMO as RDR has all the makings of one without the un-fun stuff and the people.

The multiplayer is nothing to write home about (though the free roam is a nice start to a new line of thinking, it's just completely devoid of compelling features.. why can't we claim a hideout and rob banks and improve said hideout, etc? I tried to rob a bank in free roam.. it was a static room with a vault that you couldn't interact with).

The single player is AMAZING and is what I'm talking about, however. If the social element is what makes MMOs a big deal, then so be it. Otherwise an MMO would be redundant with RDR in existance, so long as they supply us with ample DLC.
If they took these games and allowed full co-op with a group of players, and added a subscription option that came with an unending and ample supply of new DLC/missions/whatever... i'd probably never play an MMO again.

Well, except all the ones i'm addicted to :)
