Is anyone able to give a fair and balanced opinion about the state of this game?

I read through the OP of the thread on the MMORPG forum and dismissed it as being awful, but then after I started reading the threads and not just the posts that had been cherry-picked my perspective changed slightly.

So on one side there's "this game is horrible" and on the other it's "this game is great".

Which is it?

Well, it was a very promising title once with unique features and still has a lot of potential. But in its final beta-stages, it suffered horribly from several design decisions and probably most of all from the way too early release date. It had massive performance issues and some of the key features simply used bad mechanics. Too many details just don't seem right.

So, "this game is horrible" may not really be justified but it definately needs a lot more than just the usual "polishing". Well, I guess that's what everyone ever said about every MMO before launch. Though in Mortal's case, it might be true.
Give it some time after the release and then give it a chance. Some of its ideas and features are really different from what the usual Fantasy MMO feels like.

Oooh open PvP fantasy MMO launches are so exciting!

Will it be a scam like Mourning? Will it have a huge empty world with hardly any non-PvP content like Dark & Light? Will it die a lingering death yet be fondly remembered like Shadowbane? Will it be a niche title full of exploits and hater drama like Darkfall? Or will it just be an unmitigated disaster of a bug-ridden launch like... well, pretty much all of them really?

I absolutely cannot wait to find out!

It's UO (in the PvP sense) with forced first-person perspective. Thieves, murderers, more thieves, and more murderers.

How niche is that? Oh, fairly.

The majority of potential customers won't pay money to be victims 24x7 in MMO's. This is a pretty simple axiom that apparently many developers don't know about.

Remember how in UO when you were 12, you and your buddy would stand at the bank, and your buddy would steal all the reagents off his 'mark' and hand them to you, then he would get wacked by the guards, but you'd still have all the reagents? And the 'mark' would say whiskey tango foxtrot and get all mad? Priceless! Right?

Yeah, wouldn't it be awesome if there was a brand new MMO launching on June 9, 2010 that had THAT!? C'mon, it was AWESOME when you were 12, why would it be bad now?
