The only thing I will comment on about this article (out of pure frustration) is the portion dedicated to the engine. The graphics as is (for some ridiculous reason) are taxing enough on the system because of how poorly optimized this game is. I'm sure the devs realize this and that is probably why they couldn't incorporate sniper rifles, because the engine is just so poor it couldn't possibly support the draw distance.

This is a personal issue to me, the graphics, because this game can't honestly expect to be taken seriously when it's bullets are seemingly drawn in MS paint.. and the AI.. oh god no!

Anyways, I've almost concluded my rant (for now) and I have one question to the fallen earth die hards:

How could you possibly bring yourself to play after the seemingly haphazardly thrown together intro? The "boss" somehow strafing over a 10 foot wall, teleporting randomly.. and all the other disgusting things within the introduction; OH the gun fire animation in first person is WORSE than MOHAA (a 2002 game). How did you do it? This game is so well below the standards of MMO's 6 years ago how is it living in this day in age?

@chris, your little 'W' avatar gives away your heritage. Fallen Earth is a game for adults and may not appeal to everyone.

"how is it living in this day in age?"

Because it's still a very good game, unlike the rest of the MMO garbage that's been released in the last 5 years. The graphics aren't the best, but they still look good on a decent computer that can set the graphic settings all the way up (I have a good PC that has zero issues running the game lag and hitching free). For me personally it's two things that keep me playing. 1. The community is tight, RPers are the best I've played with in years, and the non RPers are still just as friendly and helpful. It's also the only game I play where I can stomach the general chat channel. 2. The open world. It's the first game since early SWG and DAoC (before their "upgrades") where I feel I can explore and do whatever I want. I don't have any rails telling me how I have to play and I don't feel like I'm magically hopping around instance to instance where it feels like a bunch of tiny zones instead of a giant setting.

It's a shame FE didn't have the budget or team size of a 2 month and cancel MMO like Cryptic wastes time & money on. If FE had their money, I can imagine how much more awesome of a game they would have made.

CCon99: These last few years I've been searching desperately for a new mmo to play, I've tried AoC, WAR, all sorts. That said, when I read about Fallen Earth needless to say I was excited, until I played it. This is about where I wish they had the budget and development team to fully complete and polish the game. I want it to be good, but in the state it is in right now I don't see how it can succeed in the long term, unfortunately.

Well it's already sort of succeeding, so it can only get better from here. Unlike the bigger name MMO titles, this game didn't have a huge launch, but also unlike the bigger named MMO's, FE has actually seen their subscription numbers slowly rise more and more since launch as good word of mouth gets out on the gameplay. Unlike the bigger name titles that see large numbers of customers at launch, then quickly fade out 30-60 days after that launch. Another plus is FE wasn't as expensive to develop, so as long as they keep people playing, they'll likely break even faster.

I would definitely suggest doing a trial of the game if you have some free time. Like you, I really hated FE after my first impression, when I played it in late beta and decided to skip the launch. Then around December someone was telling me how much of a great time they and their guild were having in the game, so I did the trial, fell in love once I got past level 8ish, and have been playing it ever since. Sure it still might not end up your cup of tea, but no game is ever going to please everyone. It's like Red Dead Redemption, some are hailing it as one of the greatest games ever created, while others hate it because it's to big a sandbox. It's actually a shame because RDR's free roam mode is more of a MMO than a game like STO turned out to be.

It appears I deviated from my original statement and ranted. Apologies, I get worked up about how regularly Massively posts material on such poorly developed games.

Chris,

While I understand that you may not enjoy Fallen Earth (I'm a bit with you, I couldn't get into it myself, and I keep trying to like it), we post about it because there are people who really do enjoy this game and want to know more.

Sure, there are certainly aspects of FE that can get on everyone's nerves (graphics issues included) but there are aspects of the game that are pretty neat, like the FPS-esque targeting, old-style stat spread, and crafting system.

So, as long as people keep enjoying it, we're going to keep posting on it. I mean, that's what we do for many of the games we post about, as we try to keep it as diverse as possible around here (which is really hard and rewarding all at the same time.)

If they didn't there wouldn't be much of anything to write about, depending on your opinions of just what qualifies of course.

@Miszou You realize that the WoW icon is automatic, right? I didn't actually choose that. Also, I've played many a mmo (including WoW, AoC, WAR, SWG, the list goes on) so don't assume I don't have a clue about what is good what is bad. I played AoC at launch, I know what "terrible" is. What I also find entertaining is you presume I am probably around the age of 14 which is a testament to your maturity level as well. I'd say a few other things but I'd really not want to tarnish this fine community by wasting my time on you.

Anyways, I don't wanna knock anyone for playing FE, I'm just really curious how they deal with the overall lack of polish and.. well.. development of the game. I may come off a bit rash at times but to be honest, I'm part of the dedicated mmo community and we've been through a hell of a lot these last few years so we HAVE to be critical of what we see.

Sera, I know there are probably AMAZING aspects of the game (hell, I drooled at the faction system) I just wish the game was more of a finished product rather than what it is today. I am one of the many players who are oh so very tired of hearing how awesome a game is only to play it at launch and find it much closer to an alpha client.

I just wish that FE would stick with the philosophy about weapons that they stated several times in the game's manual: That melee would do the most damage but would require being next to the person (and definately in danger from their attacks), pistols would be a well rounded weapon that would do fine in medium range but not do the kind of damage melee weapons would, and that rifles would have a serious range advantage but not hit as hard as the other two. This seemed like a good system to me but has obviously been warped a bit and seems to have problems with PvP.
Well, for one thing, there's tons of FPS games out there that have lovely PvP and have obviously dealt with the issue of balancing sniper rifles with other weapons and so on. So maybe FE just needs to copy them. And maybe it is just a problem with the engine. Another issue, to a small degree, is that you can't really change your spec so it's not like someone could use rifle for PvE and then switch to a pistol spec of PvP. But that, of course, doesn't solve our problem.

As for Chris and his concerns... well no game is going to please everyone. I personally don't give a crap about graphics in general and worry a lot more about gameplay. There's lots of games out there with great graphics that aren't nearly as entertaining as the original Zelda, Final Fantasy, Metal Gear, etc, that were on the NES. It's just too bad more kids these days won't ever bother to play those games. But I'm liking FE because of the feel of the game, the crafting system, and most of all, the community. That's me. If someone doesn't like it, that's fine.

Chris, did this game kick your dog or something? You dont like it...we got it. Move along and spend time on something you like. Plenty of us around here like FE and are aware of just how dumb some of your comments are.
As for balance, you can bet that Icarus is aware of it. With the heavy emphasis on pvp, Im sure rifles will get buffed( or some balance adjustment of similar effect) sooner than later.

I'd like to see you educate me on how any of my comments on the game are in any way untrue. Or you could just call me dumb instead. Whichever is easier for you.

Fallen Earth made several mistakes.

1 they didn't follow through with Pvp area's with exclusive resources to fight over, like in the first sector. Instead the jumped onto the bandwagon with the battle grounds every MMO has...

2 Every combat character should invest in "combat" and the combat skill
should allow you to use melee, pistol's and rifle when they're advantage
is in your favor. If this was the case then there'd be no need for weapons
balance and rifles, pistols and melee weapons could be modled realistically.

Also the insane buffing system was just too much... to be fun for pvp.
