Chain rats if you're going to be around for more than an hour, otherwise farm them (Brendan's last article covered this really well).

EQ2: collecting. I sell those little pieces for so much cash. In Mabinogi I will sell those little items that everyone needs but that take a while to get to. I will sell a dozen or so full bags of cobwebs, making a few hundred thousand in an evening.

Then I blow it all.

I'm an AH player, myself (in WoW).
I never d/e greens, I always sell them on the AH, plus I'll regularly resell items posted by other players too cheaply.

Naturally I also loot and vendor everything, quest everything, and after lvl cap I continue questing and doing dailies to collect gold.

It's great always having a 'sugar-daddy' toon that alts can leech off when need be.

=)

i'm a trader first and foremost.
in world of warcraft that means i played the AH mostly.

in EvE it means i was/am one of the richest players in the game. i quit the game some months back after having been quite inactive for close to a year
in darkfall it means i was rich enough to out-buy alliances as a solo players.

trading is my lifeblood and where some can get more an hour by killing mobs, my money keeps flowing when i do the /nap ;)

Trading and reaction POSes in Eve Online. All of my assets and liquid cash is pushing me to the half-trillion ISK mark. (of course being a successful alliance theif helps as well!)

I've never had the patience to "work" the marketplace but I AM a bit obsessive-compulsive when it comes to game economies, trying to rack up as much cash as possible.

I currently have one game that I barely play but I still log in every morning to do a daily "treasure" quest so I can get stuff to sell on the AH.

Two ways:

I loot everything in sight... things that most others just leave laying in the dirt. It might not fetch a big payout in the short-term, but it does add up over time.

Auction houses. More and more games have them (or something like it). You don't have to spend hours scouring the market. You really just need to login two or three times a day and place smart bids. And you have to know the market: know the trends, the real value of items. It helps being on the west coast because I have access to the markets at a time when a large portion of the population are logged off and asleep.

EQ2 - Shinies! The collection quest items are always in demand. When Sentinel's Fate came out I made 250 plat in that first week. But then again I spent all of it on my spells....

Back around 2005, RMT controlled FFXI economies to such a degree that (it seemed like) nearly everyone bought gil. Myself included. It's funny because I'm such a moralist in the game these days (maybe because of guilt, but money is a lot easier to come by).

Anyway, SE made an interesting choice of making gil not drop from mobs (certain mobs do drop a tiny, tiny amount of gil), while also making much of what was top gear when the game launched craftable and/or AHable. Which meant you had ZERO money flow from just playing the game normally but needed enormous amounts of gil to gear properly.

RMT saw this and went to town, monopolizing mobs with money drops, and jacking up the price so that pretty much the only sure fire method (that didn't require insane amounts of luck, time or both) of obtaining gil was buying it online.

In most MMO's I try to make money as a crafter. Just in EVE I didn't, because I didn't like the crafting system very much. I made quite some cash with trading between trade and mission hubs there.

in DDO, play a monk. your repairs are cheap even if you die, there's no spells you need to buy or real gear you need to upgrade. Run your quests and sell your loot any way you can. My monk is sitting on nearly 10K plat and is only level 6.

Mooch off friends...if they'll let me. :p In FFXI I was friends with one of the richest NA players. He always felt indebted to me because I told him about NM camping and where some of the better ones to camp were. This was about a week or two after release, when most NA players had no idea about the game (I had picked up on a few things in beta). He proceeded to spend the next few months straight camping the Valkrum Emperor. Later I helped him camp some of the less known about mobs.

In LOTRO I had a friend who made a fortune selling crit weapons, back when crafting was worth a darn. But she wouldn't let me borrow any money.

Otherwise I take a slow but steady approach. When I wasn't being a moocher in FFXI, I farmed Quadav Helms. Back in SOA in LOTRO, when quests and mobs didn't give you all the money you would ever need, I sold Dwarf-Iron Ore (only a T4 ore, but it went for the most money) and occasionally crit Tailor gear.

I have done a little bit of everything (Yes, even RMT).
In SWG I used to get my money by farming "Woolamander Harrower Bone Fragment" and "Reclusive Gurk King Hide" and selling them to people who wanted the RIS armor..
In WoW I have failed at pretty much every method of getting gold I have tried (except RMT, hard to fail at cheating). I don't have time for farming or doing every quest, I never manage to get a crafting pattern for something that is in demand and not supplied by every other crafter on the server, and I suck at AH.. So in WoW I end up with just enough gold for enchants/gems and not a copper more.

In Guild Wars, I simply salvage every bit of loot I get (well, aside from golds, since selling them to a merchant is usually more profitable). I then stack the materials. Those material stacks already cut back big time on the costs of new armour sets, but they are also assets I can sell if I need cash. The technique works; though I don't have the money to buy the most expensive things in the game, I usually have enough money to buy whatever I want. For example, rather recently I crafted a pair of Dragon Gauntlets for my Warrior, which in total must've cost more than 40k.

In EVE Online, I mine. It's not very profitable, but since I'm in a Hulk, I make a fair deal of money on it. Though originally it was my plan to train for a drone boat Domi and start running missions, my initial experiences with Planetary Interaction on the test server have been great, and I'm looking forward to the launch of Tyrannis on the live server. If all else fails I can always set up an Oxygen factory on a gas giant and make a little cash that way.

One of my favorite things to do in any mmo is to acquire mass amounts of gold.
I have had great success in usually just farming materials for crafting items that I know will bring a good profit.
In Guild Wars during the seasonal events mobs will drop special items that fetch a good amount of gold. I usually spend most of the time just farming my ass off for a few days during those events and then the return is very nice (I have made over 250k in gold during a nice weekend while the Halloween event was going on.)
Since I usually game late at night and early mornings I can find good farming spots that I have researched and found to be highly profitable.(ex. in WoW there is an area that is in Wintersgrasp where the mobs drop alot of eternal lifes, which sell for good gold on my server.
When I do amass gold beyond my needs it is usually just wasted in a matter of a few hours on pointless mounts or vanity pets, (I am OCD when it comes to collecting pets in mmo's) or handed out to the lower class guildes who have no clue how to make it rich.

A lot depends on the economy of the games in question, and the status of the player characters. A game like Age of Conan is awash in mediocre but useful loot, and almost all better loot cannot be sold. Here, I try to ease each character's path by not accumulating game cash. This is not an inflationary environment.

City of Heroes, by contrast, has a highly inflationary environment, despite the fact that there is no real character binding: valuable loot items are in very short supply. The game is still awash in cash from its first two and a half years where there was nothing to do with the stuff. In this game, my characters all join the same supergroup ("guild") and mutually support each other with the specific goal of avoiding the in game marketplace, where prices are often out of reach due to there being so much currency in the system compared to the scarcity of the most desirable goods.

World of Warcraft, when I was playing it, seemed somewhere between the two. Daily quests and materials grinding meant a reliable income, and market prices, while high, were not unachievable. I had a steady racket running for a while grinding thorium in the Eastern Plaguelands, which sold for a substantial premium to levelling crafters, well beyond the minimal bother a max level character could get it with.
