We here at Massively are unabashedly looking forward to TERA, the forthcoming fantasy action MMORPG from Bluehole Studio and En Masse Entertainment. For those of you who were unable to attend this year's GDC10, En Masse has helpfully released the teaser trailer (that originally debuted at the conference way back in March) on YouTube.
The two-minute video focuses on the game's eight classes, and was created using in-game footage. Taking center stage are the Slayer, the Archer, the Lancer, the Warrior, the Sorcerer, the Berserker, the Priest and the Mystic, each featuring a few moments of gameplay footage interspersed with some brief concept art shots. Check out the trailer embedded after the cut or over on YouTube.

Hum, interesting looking vids. Is this an Asian game? It seems to have some of the artwork similar to Aion. I just want to avoid another grinder tho.
That sorc, wow. I'd have to play one just for the stripper dance.

The game is essentially Lineage III in spirit, but it is under a different and hopefully better developer than NCsoft (They look to be better based of the fact that they are really listening to the testing groups and changing stuff that they are not happy with).
However, if the game will succeed in the West is very Dependant on how much the game's code is open to En Masse to change, if BlueHole gives them full access I have no doubt that it will be a good game.
There still are a lot of flaws in the game at this point, but the developers are very involved and intertwined in the forums. A lot has changed based off of feedback.
As we discussed this in the IRC, another person had mentioned that;
"Korean Developers need to realize that westernization is more than just translating text.".

Agreed, malahide. For a game that isn't going to see the light of day until Q1 2011, these trailers are absurd for a wide variety of reasons.
In every interview where any TERA developer is asked a very specific question about detailed mechanics, the audience is told it is a work in progress, and there is no information they can share. Re-using the same vidcap sequences over and over in these pointless trailers does nothing for me. Guess what? We noticed!
Yeah, you, the TERA marketing sales droid sitting alone somewhere desperately counting your pennies? Yeah, we noticed. We don't need another recap of the classes, they're on your web site. What we need now are official skills lists, complete with range, number of targets, refresh timers, and power cost. Not this same eye candy drivel we've seen 10 times before.
You've said the stats and numbers currently on the official forums for each class are going to be subject to massive changes between now and launch. Oh goody, well, it's good then that you're testing with values that are subject to massive changes. What could go wrong?
btw, the whole concept of non instant-cast abilities? Or calling one second casting time "instant" instead of actually making it instant? yeah, we noticed that too. (hint: instant cast means there's no casting time. As in zero seconds) Making a melee class spend more than 2.5 seconds using an ability? Fail. Not having sane refresh timers on overpowered abilities? Fail. Not having immunity timers on CC abilities? Fail.
Finally, when all the abilities of all the melee classes are identical for the first 30 out of 60 levels, but you continue to avoid the question of how these classes are unique, you're not helping yourself. You're just not. Tell us, or remove half the classes. Better now than later.

This trailer does not show me anything that does not make this game look like a other Asian grinder game sadly. Please show us some real content pretty graphics do not make good games that is one thing Aion did learn us well!

This game looks beautiful, too bad it is going to be a boring hardcore grindfest game like any other Asian MMO.

For a majority of players, Aion was the 'third strike', and it is now going to take something far different to get them excited about a new mmo of this genre (fun eye candy, neat looking animations). This trailer is more of the same...
An mmo trailer in 2010 will be well received if it demonstrates how the game will break the tired old mold. While Tera seems interesting, I've seen nothing that doesn't make me think of the money I wasted on other supposed 'great mmos'.

Uh, you mean like the action-based combat?
Seriously, I am stoked for TERA. The number of people who are is only growing with time, and as it currently has a bigger development price tag than any MMO created to date, it has all the potential to be amazing. Some players will no doubt WANT to stick with their WoW style click a target and keybind random 1-5 until dead "combat". but for a lot of us, this game has the potential to be amazing, and as is always the case, none of you will know shite about how good it's going to be until it's actually out. For those of you new to MMOs, that's how it always goes. They're a complicated game to create, with many layers of gameplay that need to be taken into consideration and fleshed out, to avoid making it all feel disjointed and mediocre or 1-dimensional.

I am weird because grind does not bother me. I also like S. Korean game designs and something about bikini armor makes me smile.

Beautiful game and I have heard the fighting is real-time which sounds great. But as others have said, if its a grinder no one will play regardless.

Ugh... the more I see of this game the less interested I become! I keep hoping for something different to catch my eye but this looks like it's blending in with all the other asian MMOs out there. Hopefully I'll get a chance to play it before it launches.

This game will be postponed untill at least 2nd Q 2011 I bet. Perhaps even longer in the west. 3rd of 4th Q here as En Masse will have to make some large adjustments. I think they are on the right track though, but it is so muh work that we won't see this game anytime soon.

I swear Massively has already showed this same exact article or it was Joystiq. You won't see any new videos for awhile guys. E3 is coming up soon and that is when majority of questions and new videos will be shown and answered. As Bob said look for Tera over in the west to be around Q2 of 2011. From what they have said they are working on adding more quests and lore for the western people. They are greatly taking our input by giving us more customization on gear and sprites. If they continue with our feedback it could become something great by the time it is released.
As for people whining about the grind. Every single MMO has grind in it. WoW's grind = endgame gear...Aion's grind = wtf does it ever end?...Tera's grind = TBA
Every game will be compared to WoW since it's stardom. Some of the so-called hardcore Aion players say Aion is nothing like WoW, and look how that game turned out in the west. There is nothing wrong with taking elements popular in other games. WoW isn't all that original. Majority of their stuff was ripped from other games. Tera's true test is how much effort they put into the game and don't BS the community with lies and bait n switches.
