If you've felt like the population in EverQuest was on the low side lately, you can expect that problem to disappear within the next month or so. Sony Online Entertainment will be gradually cutting the number of servers in half beginning June 22nd. They'll complete the process by July 6th, leaving ten servers in place of the original twenty.
It's a big undertaking, and SOE have done some detailed planning ahead. The forum announcement contains the list of planned mergers, answers to common questions, and important information about the deletion of inactive characters and shared banks. They are further easing the transition by offering one free server transfer for all affected characters as well as discounts on race, gender, and name changes.
If you've got characters in EverQuest -- active or inactive -- these server merges are very likely going to affect you. Head over to the EQ forums and read the full announcement for all the details.

Just a little clarification, if I may.
" Sony Online Entertainment will be gradually cutting the number of servers in half beginning June 22nd. They'll complete the process by July 6th, leaving ten servers in place of the original twenty."
There are actually 24 servers at present, 4 of which are unaffected by the mergers, so there will then be 14 left in addition to which SOE have announced that a new one will also be added. So there will be 15 servers instead of the present 24, rather less than the "cutting in half" suggested in the article.
Frankly I'm amazed there are still that number 11 years after the game was launched! I can think of quite a few MMO's that would love to have even half that number.

I'm going to get me one of those three day passes this week and spend some evenings sorting everyone out in preparation. Great news tbh, I can't wait!

Two things. Wow, really that many people still playing EQ, dang.
Second, get on with the EQ2 and VG merges.

WTB EQ2 server merges, please. The Oasis server, in particular, is more like a barren desert with tumbleweeds blowing across the landscape than its namesake.

Notice how professional SOE is on giving out the merger info with the announcement. Like most other companies that have had to do so.
Begin NCSoft rant< Notice how unprofessional NCSoft is when announcing Aion's mergers: "they'll be server merges soon" with no info whatsoever. Which, sadly, is pretty typical of how NCSoft operates. Of course if they hadn't ignored the game in the western market for 8 months and fixed stuff like they should have done back in November, they probably wouldn't need server merges in the first place.> End NCSoft rant.
So cheers to SOE for handling things like they should be done when this kind of thing happens. Sad news that there are servers being lost, but the game must still be pretty healthy to have so many servers even after the merger!

I played not too long ago and the servers were actually pretty well populated. I mean, not like the old days but i've played more recent MMOs with more empty areas.
The last round of server merges was handled great back in like..2005. They told you what server was merging with what, rules on the keeping your names, etc, and they held voting on the Server names (The 2 server names that were merging and a new server name). It made the merging a lot easier to deal with.
Also, the EQ servers are a bit older than most MMO servers now and most likely don't have the same pop caps as the newer games, so the server count may be a little misleading.
But hey, after the merge 14 servers, a new expansion still pumping out once a year. This might make it to 15 lol

@weez
There was no voting for server names they just kept the name of the higher populated server during the merge.
Otherwise i agree it was handled well.

@Rawr
Yes, yes there was voting. But, across the board, the Higher populated servers won out the naming. The voting was between the 2 servers and one of the Dragons of EQ Lore.
Example: 1) Tunare 2) E'Ci 3 Klandicar were the options for my server.
Even still, they copped out and it became Tunare (E'Ci).
