I think part of the problem is that there isn't isn't really anything tangible people can get from gaming. It lives in a box. And it's very expensive.

If i go fishing in real ife, I can get fish and eat them. In a fishing game all I get is some worthless score.

If I grow a garden, I get things I can eat.

If I grow a garden in a game, I can't eat anything from the game.

If games tought me how to fish in real life more successfully or taught me how to properly grow a tomato plant. I think people would be more likely to get involved in gaming.

But even if it did teach me those things, I can always get the same info from any gardening or fishing book or off internet websites for what 0 to $10 bucks?

Another sceanario is fishing, hunting, racing, gardening are usually seperate games in the gaming world. in the real world it's all together.

So i think amking games more like life would be a good start.

I think "more like real life" is not the way to go.
From my observations SL is about fantasy of some kind, doing something or being someone that you can not in RL.
SL is also a haven for people whose RL social life is restricted in some way.
The Crippled become whole, and Dance!
The Shy become bold, and Blossom!
The Ugly are made Beautiful.
The Tired are Restored.

SL is a world of RL misfits. Together here, We Dance!!!!

The New Colossus

Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
"Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she
With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

Tateru, the secret sauce is...what's not possible in real life.

If immersive environments have not caught on with the mainstream it's not because the sauce isn't there. It's probably because tasting the sauce is non-intuitive for newbies, the recipe is not quite perfected, and the dining public has not quite discovered the little chic places that serve the sauce.

Farmville, for all its silliness, shows that lots of folks who would never farm in reality are pleased to try it on a screen. Make virtual environments that easy to use but with some of the verisimilitude of movie CGI, and get them to run on low-end hardware, and the sauce will fly off the shelves.
