EA recently announced their controversial Online Pass program, a business model that looked pretty appealing to Ubisoft. CEO Yves Guillemot says that they are "looking very carefully at what EA is doing," so we will probably see them adopting a similar program in the future. The Online Pass program requires players to either purchase the games new, or pay EA $10 to unlock online content on used or rented games.
According to a recent report at Gamespot, that's not the only project going on at Ubisoft right now. While they are considering something similar to Online Pass for the future, the focus is more on the development side for the time being -- specifically the development of MMOs. They say they've got five free-to-play MMOs in the works, including the Heroes of Might and Magic MMO that we heard about last month. Heroes of Might and Magic, currently in closed beta, is the game we have the most information on, but we'll keep an eye out for news on the other four titles Ubisoft has planned.

I hear the DRM on these MMOs will require that you are always connected to the server--oh wait...

So we now have a grand total of about 20,000 MMOs?

1) Heroes of Might and Magic
2) Imagine!: Mall Shopping!
3) Imagine!: Vet Hospital!
4) Imagine!: Daycare Center!
5) Imagine: The Circus!
there's your list of MMOs Ubi is working on (and why they can make 5 at once).

Well I was keeping an eye open for a chance to comment on the Beta of HOMM (that I played for a couple of days.) Compared to HOMM 3, the Online game is a steaming pile of crap. It's missing just about everything that made HOMM 3 a good game. No time management, no unit management (units are produced so fast you go into EVERY quest with a full complement), only one hero to play per server, no buildings in towns besides unit producing ones, so no need to make decisions about that. Really, that's what it comes down to, very little need to make decisions or use your brain at all. Enemies are 99% easily destroyed without losing a single unit or the 1% is completely overpowered and you don't have a prayer. I tried to play it as long as I could stand to but they changed one of the best games ever into a mindless and boring grind.
On a related note, I read on wikipedia that "the Better Business Bureau has given TQ Digital Entertainment and NetDragon Websoft, Inc. the worst possible rating (an F). An explanation was given: "We strongly question the company’s reliability for reasons such as that they have failed to respond to complaints, their advertising is grossly misleading, they are not in compliance with the law’s licensing or registration requirements, their complaints contain especially serious allegations, or the company’s industry is known for its fraudulent business practices." So I'd be very careful before spending any money with them.

I really wanted to like HOMO or (HoMMo?) but yeah steam pile of doo doo. I was hoping for an mmo not a RTS with trade chat and a clutter playfield. The lore of M&M would lend itself well to a traditional MMO. Most people don't remember that the series started as a standard rpg back in the dos days and snes i believe.

Man, I'd love to see a Might and Magic MMORPG, loved the earlier games. They seemed more sandboxy to me than many of today's big-budget MMOs. Many fun hours wandering those huge (for the time) worlds.
Heck, I'd even take just a console compilation of the original single-player RPGs right now.

Yet another IP turned into a steaming pile of crap MMO... damn. Oh well, they'll probably get enough people spending hundreds of bucks a month to support it.

i decided to read the comments because i was expecting a bash-fest on HoMMO, and obviously i'm not surprised by what i'm finding here. the graphics and play system are a throwback to the original 1p releases of HoMM, only without the fun and challenge. the only good thing about my experience in this "closed" beta was that, upon uninstalling the client, i got the option to explain my reasons. sure, i doubt that my explanation will have any real affect on the game's release status or anything, but putting my first impressions in print was at least somewhat cathartic.

HoMMO's graphics are fine, but the gameplay and presentation are absolutely the worst I've ever experienced, even beating most un-Westernised Korean grind-em-ups.
The gameplay is a screaming ghost of a once mighty game, trapped behind your monitor screen and wailing to be exorcised; the art and presentation are pure Asian schlock. Yuk.
Fortunately, HoMMO V is now in a Gold Edition with all its expansions, and at budget prices!

I've tried to beta, found it ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE, then went and bought the Heroes V Gold. So much better... even if the voice acting is terrible.

Ha ha, yeah, isn't it bad? The woman who plays the queen or the heroine or whatever in the main game, sounds like she's reading a newspaper...
