Playerbase? Well, I'm there, so it's fantastic :)

No seriously...players that I have encountered are generally pretty cool and helpful. It's an MMO, so there is an occasional D-bag. But I have found a lot of fun social interaction in this game, something that was sorely missing in many other MMO's that I have tried.

I would suggest avoiding Tyranny though; they are infamous for die-hard D-bag pvp gankers. Cimmeria is the server that I play on, and though there is open PVP, it seems to be a little bit more considerate.

Also, if you're into RP at all, Cimmeria has a decent amount of it! If you're in for a PVE server though, I suggest Wiccana, which also has some RP.

Good luck in Hyboria friend! If you're a Cimmerian, look me up in game as Regnarr. If you're one of them filthy Stygian types...well, best stay close to your homeland, foreigner! The might of Crom is bone-crushingly awesome.

Actually, is what I heard about playing the first "tutorial" bit, to level 20, for free true?

So if I bought the game a bit ago, and played but my highest was only level 8, can I just do the to 20 trial with him?

A trial account is separate to your existing retail account, so you'll have to start afresh with new characters on a trial.

With those trial characters, you can play for an unlimited amount of time, but you can't leave Tortage or level past L20.

Wiccana has, by far, the best community. If you join another server and have any complaints at all about the community, try wiccana before giving up.

If you roll on pvp server, try to get in a decent guild asap - a good guild really makes the game either way, but it's nice to have backup on a pvp server. Also, don't adventure alone if you can help it. In Tortage avoid white sands and underhalls unless you're ready for pvp. Don't complain to anyone if you get killed either.

I see a lot of players when I'm on my new to 42ish characters. Plus, many of them are totally new to the game which is great and tells me that the game is growing again. You could always give the trial a shot to check it out before subbing.

Right now is definitely the time to try the game if you played at launch and then quit, or just want to give it a shot. I've seen a lot of grouping in leveling areas, and there's obviously a lot of activity in Khitai. Everyone's pretty well-natured, if not a bit blood thirsty on PvP servers. But that's good. :)

There are lots of technical issues and Funcom is definitely still figuring out how to implement alternate advancement. But coming from a player who experiences soul-crushing lag and client crashes on a daily basis, I can still oddly enough say it's very much worth it. You just have to really be into what makes AoC different.

Good article, as I thought for the most part it was very accurate about what's been going on in AoC lately.

You can head straight to the new area of Khitai as soon as you leave Tortage if you wish. This can be on a character of any race, or on a character you've created as Khitai'n.

There's no 'level requirement' for the new content per-se.

If you truly have a lvl 42 Ranger at your disposal then get him/her to lvl 50. Once you do that, Funcom gives you a free lvl 50 character which you can make into whatever class you want. Of course I suffer from alt-itis so I have a toon of almost everything except a Barbarian & Conquerer so I'm definitely not suggesting that you don't try as many as you can :)

Lets not beat around the bush here, at launch the state of this game was an utter disgrace.

Today, the transformation is astounding and one I certainly couldn't have imagined happening. Well worth giving the free trial a go to make up your own mind.

Yes AoC is truely a great game now. It was a polished turd at launch but FC with Sil, Ren and the rest of the team have transformed it into easy for me at least the best mmo out there.

AoC is on the rise... :)
