What would you do with an empty lot that you could build almost anything on? Free Realms is interested to see what your answer might be, because they've removed the biggest impediment to building whatever you want: that big, inconvenient house in the middle. Well, to be fair, houses aren't inconvenient when you want one there, but they do sort of get in the way of a giant hedge maze, or obstacle course, or tribute to yourself in real estate form.
There are two types of lot currently available, a Briarwood lot and a Snowhill lot. Each one can hold a grand total of 1,500 items, which gives players more than enough freedom to build almost anything. The one catch is that the lots do cost Station Cash, but that's the nature of the free-to-play beast. Free Realms has always had an interesting mix of elements, both sandbox-oriented and quest-oriented, and this one skews toward the side of a sandbox -- which is what you can literally build, if you so desire.

Wow, that is interesting. It would be great to see what people do with those.
I wonder how far off we are from people designing their own mini-zones with quests and such?

I would love to know what is REALLY going on behind the scenes at Free Realms.
Is it making money or not?
And why does SOE like "Combat Upgrades" so much?

Even though they won't say, I believe at one time the game was not profitable, because you could do most anything for free in the game. I would have to imagine with the membership benefit changes put in place late last year to entice people to pay their $5 a month, and the tons of great new stuff they have added to the cash shop, they have to be generating quite a bit of profit now. It seems the game is more popular then ever looking at the busy servers, and rarely does anyone complain about new cash shop items, the majority seem to love what SOE is doing. I am looking forward to combat changes they are working on for a future patch to make it more fun again, and also hopefully we will see some new lands or quest lines added soon for those who aren't just into mini games and dress-up.

Good education costs money, good thing mine only costs what it takes to access your internet.
There is no such thing as a F2P game. Dont look up under your eyelids or hope rolling your eyballs back will change that statement. Stand on your soapbox or hope that catchphrase makes it a reality.....just isnt happening.
The real nature of the beast is this, if it has or needs a transaction shop to access any content, no matter how insignificant, it isnt free to play. If you need to play another game to have access to a free to play game, it isnt free to play, if you bought a program to make the game work, in any capacity, it isnt free to play.
We could digress into all manner of nitpicky examples but why bother, the point is made.
Free realms is a very decent game for kids and the microtransactions for cash on little things are easy on parents pocketbooks and kids allowances.
........now excuse me, i have a tree branch i need to show Eliot............

Hate to interrupt your misguided ramblings but Free-to-Play is a perfect name for these games.
They cost nothing to install. No box fee.
There is no monthly cost.
There are no required fees to continue playing.
I have played Runes of Magic for one year without spending a dime.

I'm beginning to not like Free Realms very much because the only things you can do for free is quests (up to level 5) and minigames, the reason I play free to play games is so I don't have to pay for most of the things.

They also have just (finally) offered multiple month subscriptions (3, 6 and 12 months) which discount the price down to as little as $3.30 a month. That is only 11 cents a day!
Plus, they also occasionally offer double station cash (SC) on station cash cards (and you can pay your subscription with SC), so in effect I'm now only paying about $1.65 a month for membership. Seriously, even with the nerfed combat, that is a great price! Now I have more SC to buy pets, mounts and housing/lots. :D
Buy some SC cards but don't use them until there is a double offer again. If you can wait awhile just keep playing for free, doing everything you can: working on the collections, doing all free quests, getting as much gold as you can. Then subscribe when they offer the double cash... if you can hold out that long. But even at regular price I think the game is a good deal with the new long term subs.

Their new pay model makes me very sad.
I was in closed and open betas of Free Realms and actually did not subscribe at first just to see how much content was available to free players. I was so impressed by how much free content was there that I subscribed just to support this project.
They used to allow several classes (jobs) to level to max level for free. Then other classes were pay-only.
It meant free players got to play the entire world.
Now they will only allow free players to get to level 5 in any class.
I guess they had to change to make money but it has definitely changed the game.

$5 is not a lot of money, and the stuff that you get (pack of virtual cards with virtual reward and monthly membership bundle) make it worth every penny even if you only like the game a little. For the month of April, I got the Goth Boots with the cards and a silly balloon hat and a balloon "flair shard" plus a few thousand "coins".
