Reader polls always tend to be an exercise in popularity, bucking conventional wisdom and surprise upsets -- and perhaps never so much as a recent annual PC Gamer poll that asked readers to rank the top 100 PC games of all time. EVE Online scored a surprising #3 spot on the list (falling from last year's #2 position), behind only Fallout 3 and Half-Life 2. This certainly is a testament to EVE's devoted and outspoken fans.
Several other MMOs appeared in the top 100, including World of Warcraft (#10), WURM Online (#20), World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King (#25), Lord of the Rings Online: The Mines of Moria (#31), Lord of the Rings Online: Shadows of Angmar (#36), RuneScape (#45), Guild Wars (#72), World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade (#97) and EverQuest (#100).
Of course, reader polls should always be taken with a grain of salt (mmm... salty goodness), as large organizational efforts and promotion from one studio or group of fans is often enough to create a skewed result. Still, it's a decent list, and terrific to see so many MMOs given the top honors.

That’s kind of weird how they count expansion packs as well as the core game. Seems like another way the vote would be split.

EVE's expansions are counted as part of the core game because they are. All the expansions are free, every one has them, they just become part of the game.
World of Warcraft on the other hand charges for the expansions, only those with the expansions can play that content.

But each expansion is not a stand alone "game", you need the original game to play the expansion. Like you cant play Burning Crusade by itself. Burning Crusade is not a game. World of Warcraft is a game.
The poll is for "game of all time", so to separate games into different expansions makes this poll invalid.

I cry a little when lists like this don't include Alpha Centauri.

Eve Online should have been #1, no other game has been so groundbreaking.

WoW at #10 while Eve is #3? Ok...I'm just as bored as the next guy of WoW, but to say its #10 is ridiculous. The game is responsible for making the mmo genre mainstream, its features set industry standards, and in alot of ways WoW is the true Everquest 2 in that its the 2nd great milestone for mmo's. Sometimes the need to hate whats popular becomes obvious in some of these lists.

how can it be a surprising 3rd place when they dropped from #2 last year? It would be a surprise if they went from 90th to 3rd, but not 2nd to 3rd

And how, pray tell, do you even have this information? Since it is not supposed to be published until April?
Do you have a corporate spy in at the magazine?
Very dangerous to release this type of information prior to publication by the owner.

I'm confused. It's currently May, which in the rational thinking world usually comes after April.

you can tell that younger and younger people consistently make these lists as time passes, people that apparently can't recognize Civilization as the best PC game ever. Because, well, it is.

Ah but it's no big secret that EVE-players are far superior human beings compared to all other lesser MMO and lesser PC-game players.
Duh.

I absolutely LOVE EVE, but I don't much like the list. Modern Warfare 2 at #6? The game that lacks so much as a dedicated server system, has some of the worst netcode (and thus lag), and buggiest I have seen lately, costs an extra 10 bucks on top of that... Ranked at #6. The "Reader List" is just BS.
KOTOR, BioShock, Mass Effect, and Portal four of the most universally acclaimed games are below both Modern Warfare 2? And Unreal Tournament, Quake, nor Battlefield make ANY appearance on the list, not to mention Call of Duty 2.
The Editorial list I agree with. Fallout, UT2004, X-Com: UFO Defense, System Shock 2, some of the most influential games to date. It also keeps the hogwash like Modern Warfare 2 and Left 4 Dead 2 off the list, where they should be. Thank you PC Gamer for making a great list of the great games. Readers, you disappoint me.

I think voting on expansions is cheating. But I'm thrilled to see it beat out WoW.
