I just wish NPD would release the data so that graduate researchers could have a crack at it. I know they need to make a buck but even data a year old they don't release.

I tried DDO about a month ago and it was so underwhelming ... how on earth is it even in the top 10?

I don't know about this survey. I find it pretty hard to believe DAoC and SWG are on the list and EQ2 is not.

As far as DDO is concerned, it is a fun game even as outdated as the graphics are. There is no amount of eye candy (AION) that can compensate for a good dungeon crawl.

It's because EQ2 isn't something former WoW players want to go to. It's exactly like WoW, a level grinding quest machine with end game raiding.

Though what's really interesting is that City of Heroes and City of Villains are basically THE SAME GAME, and they are listed as two separate entries of 6%. So does that mean in total 12% of WoW players have switched to CoH? If so, that makes City of Heroes the actual number two spot after Runescape.

I kinda agree - I would think EQ2 would be above something like DaoC - Ive played both - and I have taken breaks from WoW to go play EQ2. I dont think DaoC could keep me for more than a day. EQ2 doesnt seem to keep me for more than 1 or 2 months. My current WoW break game is Fallen Earth.

I think TERA or GW2 will keep me from returning to WoW....at least at first.

I did try DDO...not long though - I think it must be a game you need to stick with for more than a few days for it to suck you in.

My WoW break games that I continually return to are:

Guild Wars, EQ2, City of Villains - And now FE.

Played WoW since it was made and left right before Icecrown citidel came out.. WoW is a great game of coarse. But for those of you that are just flat out burned out on it DDO is a great replacement. Completely different combat system than any other well known mmo out there so its fresh in that respect. The dungoens are well thought out and challenging. Can't just zerg a room with force around every corner no matter what gear you have without dying. Class roles are VERY apparent in groups when clearing content on hard or elite i.e: ranger/rogue's scouting ahead of the group is unique in that it's actually required for the harder content. However gear is still very important unless you like being 1 shot from a priest curse, actually be able to do dmg to a golem or vampire, ect.
WARNING: the first like 5 levels are annoying.. the quests you do in the first couple lvl's you will be doing alot of kobold killing and it might drive you a bit crazy. Imagine killing nothing but murlocs that actually move out of the way when you try to hit them till lvl 20 in wow. But once you start doing the house quests at around lvl 6 it gets better and better with every level. especially if you get the vip content. And if you like to solo things thats an option with the hireling system (sooo past due for an AI support role npc implementation to an mmo).
My best advice is to read the forums when creating a character since DDO is a pretty complex game as far as its character builds go assuming you didn't play dungeons and dragons board games or the baulders gate/icewind dale series on computer.

City of Heroes and City of Villians is actually the same game. If you have one, you can play the other. But the NPD group report has them listed seperately with 6% each. If you combine them into one game (cause thats what it is) then city of heroes/villains would be at 12% and that would place it in the 2nd spot, ahead of DDO.

Probably not 12%, given that both titles are available to the same players. There may be a small proportion of players who exclusively play one title, but I'd expect the overlap to be quite big. So, perhaps 7% or 8% for CoH/V overall.

I'm still waiting for the Free-to-play that doesn't try and squeeze money out of it's players. In DDO and every south east asian f2p mmo they always make it so you can only buy a set number of "tokens" and it always works out you can never pay for only what you want. In DDO this is glaringly obvious. Instead of a $20 package they do a $19.50 which puts you 40 points short(get 1550, need 1590) if you want to purchase the 2 extra classes. These games need to put a $ amount on everything. If they can't make a currency conversion they don't deserver customers.

The gaming community cant be stupid enough to not notice this.

My only problems with f2p is are you get advantages over everyone else if you pay more $ than a sub game. And you get spoiled rich kids that buy everything. They are also overly infested with gold farmers and young teenagers. DDO has the "Favor" system or something that get you a different "token" type, but you cant play casually and experience the game on an equal level to everyone else like in sub games.

The problem with the market now is every game out there is either has been played to death(WoW), ruined by its creator(Star Wars: Galaxies), or sucked in the first place(Champions). Thus no one wants to pay for these pieces of crap so they go to f2p. The only project with any promise is Bioware's: The old Republic, because they have been working on it for over 2 years, all these companies now are pushing out pieces of crap so they can make a quick buck. I guess thats what happens when you just make MMO's, once the people leave you can't fund another game for a solid production period, Thus: BioWare wins, plus they make some of the best RPG's out there.

BioWare: If you make a kick ass PvP system, you will take the market for sure.

OMG. Can't belive that ppl are still playing wow after DDO. I simply love the game. Here are my reasons why:

#1 I simply love the graphics. The game looks awesome

#2 I love to hear the DM's voice. It kinda makes you feel the backstory of the dungeon.

#3 The ability to craft items. I'm not talking about creating items from pre-made recipes. NO. In DDO you can find out unique recipes, that add stats to the weps and armor.

#4 The grouping. I think someone mentioned that.

And the list keeps on going. I don't really want to play WoW anymore.

P.S.
If you ever happen to be in the realm of Khyber, try PMing Dvyvin or Gilrosh.

I think were missing the important factor of location.

If you poll american's only, that should be stated. but dont pretend there are more people playing DDO than GW when GW has a Huge foreign populace. EVE too, EVE has something like 330000 "active accounts" granted you can pay ur sub with in game currency, but still, its shown horribly here, because, a lot of foreign ppl play it.

That'd be like saying 75% of humans prefer basketball to soccer, but not mentioning that you didnt poll anyone over seas.
