I've never really gotten much into the CSM, and I have never voted for any candidates. I intend to do differently this time, so I'm really looking forward to tomorrow's coverage!

"They played a key role in helping CCP design the new sovereignty mechanics that came in with the Dominion expansion."

This is a mark against them, not for them. The CSM is excellent proof that players should have no role in designing the game.

How do you figure that? The response to the Sov changes in Dominion have been overwhelmingly positive. Lag isn't a valid complaint; even if the lag is fixed people will bring even more ships, until the system lags again. It's a vicious cycle, and can only be broken by implementing incentives for sub-(insert lag-making number here) member fleets.

TL;DR: Considering how many new alliances have migrated out to 0.0, I can only say that Dominion has been an overwhelming success. Lag is mostly our fault; CCP is a victim of their expansion's success.

No.

Not at all.

The new people moving to 0.0 are renters, since established alliances need the new income stream. Sovereignty simply -doesn't- change hands anymore unless an alliance failcascades or forgets to pay it's bills.

@Joseph: The new sov system just replaced tower grind with timer grind. At least in the old system you could kite the stront timers to your TZ, now it's impossible. Also, it's ridiculously easy to defend sov - in a station system the attacker must grind through multiple timers - and the defender only has to show up *once* during the whole time and everything resets..

It could have been good - there were some good ideas, but it was so watered down by the implementation that sov warfare basically comes down to two things: luck with timers and making sure you have enormous resources ready go 24/7 (usually that means more alarm clock ops).

I don't know anyone who is overwhelmingly positive about it - except people in high-sec who have no clue at all.

Having said that - Seleene (CCP Abathur) posted to SHC while ago about how disconnected the CCP devs are with their playerbase - the only way to get their attention these days is through the CSM system.

Go read it:

And be very afraid if complete tools like Ankhesentapemkah get elected.

Oh, did CVA forget to pay their bills? No?
Perhaps they failcascaded? Hrm, not really.

So why did CVA lose sov in Providence?

Oh, I know, because AAA took it by force.

See: failcascade.

They never put up a single defense fleet. Their participation became negligible as soon as they were faced with a real fight.

I disagree with the article's assumption that the old two term limit has somehow meant that recent CSM's "usefulness may have been diminished". CSM4 (which I was elected into) have been one of the most productive CSM to date and have (along with CCP) evolved the process to include CSM as a stakeholder in the Eve project.

The reason the term was increased to 12 months (though CSM5 is transitional and thus only 10 months) was so that CSM have a chance to participate in a full release cycle and perhaps have some of their requested changes developed and released within their term. This is important because the number one question asked of each CSM has been "what have you done" and the majority of the work they have done is sitting in the CCP backlog till after they leave office.

CSM5 will only make good use of their new status if people are elected in who take the process seriously. I would put myself into that category as somebody with a proven track record during CSM4. Other candidates such as Mynxee can also be trusted to put in the effort. My campaign site is at http://teadaze.net or you can compare all the candidates at http://match.eve-csm.com/

From the vote-match maker:
"Core combat model of EVE lacks complexity and is too simple."

What?!? Eve has more options than chess, I would like to turn that around a see a game with a more complex combat model than Eve.
